Could you forgive your spouse if they accidentally killed your child?

So a New York father was charged with the death of his one-year-old twins after he left them in his car for over eight hours while he was at work. 39-year-old Juan Rodriguez told police that he forgot his kids were in the backseat and didn't realize they were there until he was driving home at the end of his shift.

He noticed the two children were still in the backseat a few minutes after he left work. He immediately pulled over and called 911. When paramedics arrived, the children were not breathing and foaming at the mouth. The twins, identified as Mariza and Phoenix, were pronounced dead a short time later.

Rodriguez was charged with two counts of manslaughter and two counts of negligent homicide.

Rodriguez's neighbors say that he was a great father who was well-liked in his neighborhood,.

"It's just horrible. They were a great family. Always doing things with the kids, always in the yard playing. They had a big camp out last weekend with tents in the back yard. He would always play catch or basketball with his older kids," neighbor Tony Caterino told the New York Post.

The couple had planned to take their twins to the beach for the first time that weekend, but the kids died beforehand.

That's not an accident. Accident suggests it couldn't be prevented. So no, if my spouse left our 2 kids in the car to basically overheat to death I would not only not forgive them but I would formulate some form of punishment.

    That is so terribly sad

He has another kid so I would think that lessens the likelihood to neck himself

As someone with three kids of my own (the youngest of which is fifteen), I reject the idea that it’s an accident.

Forgetfulness is something that I know a lot about. I’ve been known as a forgetful person my entire life.

But never once did I forget my kids. I was never late to pick them up from school. I never forgot where they were. I never forgot to pick them up from a friends house, etc. I never forgot that they were humans and that they were alive in the back seat of my car. Not one time. Not one time in 20 years of being a parent.

At the very least, his kids were his lowest priority, even if only for eight hours. You don’t get eight hours off as a parent of tiny humans.

With that being said, I think I could forgive my wife for just about anything. But obviously I could never know for sure without being put in that position. I don’t for see it being a possibility though, because she is the furthest thing from forgetful/neglectful/reckless.

I often forget to take my wallet with me when i leave the car.

I don't quite get how you'd leave 2 kids there....
So you're telling me the kids didn't make a SINGLE sound whilst being in the back of that car whilst he was driving to work?!

I am unable to conceive of a situation in which I could forget about my kids in a car. Even if I were blackout drunk or in the throes of a massive trip, I cannot imagine forgetting about kids in a car.

    Dunno man.

Was having his kids in the car whilst going to work something unusual for him?

If it was completely out of the blue and they never made a noise as he was driving to work.....maybe he was on autopilot?

Trying to get my head around this.

I had a friend at work who had 1 child, a son who he loved to death. His wife got in a car crash and was at fault in the accident. His son died as a result. He forgave her. He is a better man than me.

He's definitely lying. Anyone who has ever traveled with kids knows that kids never keep quiet in a car. That's apart from the fact that he definitely saw them getting into the car. How the fuk do you not see 1 year old kids opening a car door and getting in unless your'e severely retarded or just plain DGAF about them.

Don't have kids but can be pretty forgetful. It's easy to judge but this definitely happens every year as accidents. That said, your kids should definitely always be priority #1 like said above.

Would take a lot of healing but I think I could forgive wife over time for the sake of the remaining kid, but if it were me don't think I could forgive myself

I've known parents that have driven to work and forgotten to take their kids to day-care in the morning because of a last minute changes in scheduling. Fortunately they caught their mistake. It happens with stressed-out and sleep-deprived parents. Sleep deprivation will totally affect judgement. It's not like this guy drove to a bar and had his kids wait in the car.

If it was truly an accident obviously but whatever this moron did wasn't even remotely close to an accident. You don't accidentally drive to work with 2 kids in your car and just leave them there the whole day. Was he on drugs? Strong wtf at all the people cheering for him.

"Yay! two 1 year old kids slowly died in the back seat of a car because of you"

Pretty much this you are staring them straight in the face half the car ride.

This. I'm forgetful as well. I have driven halfway to work with my son in the backseat of my truck but I didn't forget he was there I just forgot that I was supposed to drop him off at daycare which is weird since I do it everyday. I would've been more likely to try to take him into work with me than leave him in the truck.

That really scared the chit out of me anyway.

Ok, I’ll admit it. I forgot my newborn son in the car (in February in Alaska) for less than 5 minutes. One of the scariest moments of my life.

Ex wife and I were going out for literally the first time out shopping / in public since she gave birth. We had gone to family, but this was our first excursion into public. I dropped her off curb side at a book store, i then parked the car and walked into REI. Once I got into REI I had a weird feeling, and then realized i didn’t remember her grabbing the car seat when she got out. Nearly had a heart attack and sprinted out the store nearly bowling over anything / everything / everyone in my way.

Got to the car and lil’man was there fine sleeping. Sat there bawling feeling like the worst new father in the world.

Anyhow, so while I do know first hand that you can forget a child in a car. Forgetting 1 year old
Twins for 8 hours is tough to comprehend. Not sure if I would be able to forgive a spouse. Losing your children like that would either bring you closer in rare cases, or more likely be too much to process and create too big a wall or resent.

I also know a guy who I worked with who accidentally killed his son while running a bull dozer at his house. Young son jumped / fell / who know into the hole he was filling and backed over him. Brutal.

Nope. I have never bought into the whole "accidentally forgot my kid(s) in the car". I'm pretty open-minded but that just doesn't fly.

Other situations, maybe, but not the car thing.

It's rare for an "accident" not to involve some sort of negligence. I'll describe a situation in which I knew the parties involved.

Grandma is watching 2 year old grandchild while parents are at work. Grandma loses track of grandchild for a few minutes. Grandchild had walked into the bathroom and was playing with the toilet. Toilet seat fell down striking grandchild in the head knocking her out. She fell face first into the toilet and drowned.

    Accident or negligence?

He made a mistake. The psychological repercussions on this poor guy will be devastating. I think dragging him into court and laying charges on him at this point is wrong. Let the man pick up the shattered pieces of his life and try to move on.

People who are found guilty of involuntary manslaughter also made a mistake, a mistake that cost someone else their life. Unfortunately there are consequences for that. Why should this be different?
