Go to a proper outdoor tool shop and look at stihl and husqvarna grade equipment. Home depot will have peasant grade stuff.

Youll get what you pay for remember that if you go cheap

All the answers in this thread are wrong. If you live in the northeast, Ariens is the go to brand. Make sure you get a model with the American made Briggs and Stratton engine however.

Snowblowers that actually blow snow are a waste of money and take up too much garage space. Purchase a pair of quality boots to walk through it and have a few ergonomic shovels for a fulfilling snow removal lift. Save the money and garage space for a mower.

We get really deep snow here with ice under it and an atv with a plow on the front works best/ shoveling right after it snows and lots of salt

I have an Ariens. Would recommend. Definitely need a two stage or don’t bother.
I like Ariens because very little use of plastic. Some of the other brands have plastic shutes etc. seem to work ok but feels cheap in my hands. Was 1400 at HD 4 years ago. Still running perfect... though I haven’t fired her up yet this season.

This is poor advice. My driveway is about 90ft long. Not trying to shovel 3ft at 90ft long. Ido shovel if it’s only a few inches because I like the workout. But it’s not for everybody. People hurt themselves every year doing that. You don’t know what she has for a garage or shed etc.

I have an ATV with plow. Works fine up to about a foot, maybe a bit more.

Generally though it's way, way faster to fire up the diesel David Brown tractor with chains and a seven foot wide blower running off the PTO.

Even that takes about a half hour if it was a good bit of snow

My partner uses his truck if it gets really bad but generally doesn’t let it build up past a foot even if we get 3-5 ft and we don’t have a tractor :/

We already have a mower. I've got a huge driveway and lawn. Itd take hours to shovel Minnesota snow without a blower, and I have toddlers to deal with.

    -2 stage

    -at least 250cc engine (~8hp)

-save money and go for the most basic but powerful machine in your budget. You don't need lights, a power chute etc... it's just more stuff to break down

I have a 250cc (Briggs and Stratton) with no fancy gizmos and it can handle the worst of a Canadian winter including the mountains at the end of the driveway after the plow passes. It's a Yard Machines brand. I bought it at Home Depot Ive had it for about 10 years. No issues. The best $1000 I've ever spent.

I’ve got this but John Deere doesn’t make snowblowers any more. Ariens is the best

    342cc 32 inch clearing width

    http://www.snowblower.com/specs/john...ge/1332pe.html

    Would like this one day
38 inch 420cc. I’m friends with the owner of a small engine shop and he says they are absolute top quality.

I have a pretty large driveway/parking area so probably more than you need.

Nonsense. Poor decisions were made to purchase so much space for living in a winter setting to try to look rich. That sort of property should be owned in warm spots where it doesn't snow.

OP, PM me if you want to talk. If you are in the Twin Cities suburbs with a typical 2-3 car garage and driveway you'll want a 2-stage snow thrower with a 24"-28" cutting width. I use to use a 24" Sears (MTD made) with a Tecumseh Snow King engine that worked OK but would frequently bogged down. The top brands are Ariens, Husqvarna, and Toro. If you have a really long driveway then you'll want to consider a 28"-32" wide snow thrower, possibly with tracs, possibly with an EFI engine (they throw farther). After 18 years of use I upgraded to a Ariens 28 Deluxe, should outlive me and one of the best you can get.

A shovel is for the steps to your front door or limited access areas. For light fluffy stuff (like yesterday) a leaf blower works great. As far as maintenance you'll need to give it a good cleaning, change the spark plug, change the oil, drain the gas, and fog the cylinder before storage. Lube when necessary. It all takes about an hour a year and your machine will last for 20-30 years (or more). Buy from a dealer, they have parts and a service department, Home Depot has no after sales support.

Keep coping. I love where I live and my house isn’t that big. My previous house was less than half the size in a cheaper area. Guess what you still have to deal with the snow. Even when there’s no where to put it. Now I’ve got plenty space to put it.
