Mercury transits the Sun Monday (pretty rare)

Canada and Mexico can go fornicate with themselves apparently...

A transit is when an object passes in front of our star (from our perspective).
*Mercury transits Sol about 13 times per century and only happen in May and/or November, but not nearly as rare as:
*Venutian transits which occur twice per century and they occur in a pattern that generally repeats every 243 years, with pairs of transits eight years apart separated by long gaps of 121.5 years and 105.5 years. The next Venus transits are December 2117 and 8 December 2125
*Will last about 5 hours. USA brahs, it starts at 7:30 AM EST (so euro-brahs you need to translate the time according. I dont think that Aussies and some Asians will get to see it though)

Mercury transits are even more rare than Lunar Eclipses (280 in the 21st century). The next Mercurial Transit will be in 2032 (the last transit was 3 years ago). This is even more rare because Mercury is in retrograde (means it appears to be going backwards) but it doesnt really mean anything

What can astronomers learn from a Mercury transit?
For one, it's a recreation of past experiments which were done to calculate both Earth's and Mercury's distances from the sun, an experiment most notably attributed to Sir Edmund Halley. Secondly, while Mercury transits, visible light from the sun is absorbed into sodium atoms in Mercury's INCREDIBLY thin atmosphere and then re-emitted. Once the light reaches Earth's ground and space based telescopes (which have special detectors (radiometers) that break down the visible light and displays each elements unique imprint).

Allow me to impress upon you the severe mistake you have made. For years my conduct has been largely benign And yet without provocation you have severed our détente and forced me to unleash upon you the vengeful flames of a thousand suns. So go now and begin your life of fear knowing that when you least expect it the looming sword of Damocles will crash down upon you cleaving you in twain. Gazing upon the smoking wreckage that was your life you will regret the day you crossed the WRONG FISH
