depends on the context. for me it has 2 meanings:

    1) It could mean maintenance calories. So if someone says "eating at maintenance" they probably mean eating enough calories so that the weight stays the same. Or they might say "I maintain on 3400 calories"

    2) It could mean a maintenance phase. This would be a lower volume, probably lower intensity phase where you are giving the body and mind a break from the heavy lifting but you are still doing enough to maintain existing muscle mass.

Dr Mike Israetel popularized the idea of "volume landmarks"...one of which is "maintenance volume" (MV) which is the approx amount of volume to just maintain existing mass

Very interesting stuff, I'll dig in deeper. Thanks for the response - much appreciated.

Well I regained all the weight back I lost in last weeks woosh in Vegas and no its not water. I drank everyday and ate like a pig I didn't exactly count but just eyeballing it I probably took in about 6000 calories a day which is about 3 times what i normally do but i had a lot of fun and managed to get in a workout and clear 25k steps a day and it was really fun so eh I knew it was coming back to the grind. On the bright side I my first weigh in back was at 296 so at least I have zapped the bloat from the trip.

Looks like this week and last week's numbers decided to reverse themselves. I should have been 210 last week and 208 this week. But I think I am retaining some water that I whooshed last week. Things were on track 2 days ago, so as long as things trend downword over the month I will be happy. Hopefully 206 next week if things even out again. We'll see.

Well well well. I busted my goal despite a MASSIVE cheat day on Saturday which had me bloated and gain almost 8 lbs. The cheat included 3 eggs, 3 sausages, bacon, toast, pancake filled with whipped cream, berries and banana. Then I had a DQ Oreo Blizzard and for dinner I had sushi, sashimi, fried wontons. LOL honestly felt like crap afterwards and felt almost guilty as when I would relapse on drugs hahaha. Anyways, the next days I put those carbs to work in the gym and it paid off strength wise. I fasted on Monday and Wednesday (asides from a protein shake) and hit 4x cardio for 25 mins on the bike. Lost all the water weight and slimmed down to 194 which has be at around 15% BF.

My starting weight on this cut was: 210 lbs
My goal for this thread was 195lbs. For the two weigh ins left, i'll modify my goal to 192lbs which I don't think I will reach due to all the Xmas dinners and lunches but I do plan on staying on track. We shall see!!

This whole transformation goal initially was 185 and 13% BF but id like to get down to 175 which would have me around 10% which id maintain for a while and slowly bulk back to 185 with the same amount of BF as an end goal for the summer. But lets not get ahead of myself hahaha

CONGRATS TO EVERYONE ON THIS CUT! YOURE ALL DOING AN AMAZING JOB!!

While I'm happy with the loss this week (-2.2 lbs), I expected more after being on point this week with diet and killing it in the gym. I have had trouble sleeping for the last week, but I don't know how bi an effect that will have (I know its SOMETHING, just not sure how much). Looking like I won't hit my goal, but if I stay consistent, I should end up about 3lb shy, so not bad!

Have been eating 1800-2000kcal the last couple weeks instead of the aggressive 1500kcal I did in the beginning.

I'm slowly approaching 15% bf so I want to be more careful of preserving muscle mass and begin getting my metabolism more used to a higher calorie intake as I transition into a bulk hopefully by February at the latest, expecting vacation to put a dent on fat loss rate. End goal is 150lbs then bulk.

Hopefully I can manage to continue losing 1lb a week to reach my goal but that 27th weigh in is just ridiculous lmao, I'm probably gonna update this on the 24th before Christmas dinner instead as I'm sure I'll be a lot heavier on the 27th.

Hey this might be insightful for you: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2951287/

It actually plays a huge role in the ratio of Fat Free Mass and Fat Mass lost. Try to get your sleep in! I struggle with this too. Btw 2.2lbs is a lot, you should be happy about it, I wouldn't go for a much higher loss than that as that's pushing over 1% of your body weight and you'll start to lose FFM in the process, couple that with lack of sleep and it's a recipe for muscle demise lol

Jeez just reading about your cheat day got me hungry af hahaha, thank god I still have calories left today!

Hey man, sorry I'm just seeing your post.

Thanks, that's very interesting reading! I've been doing much better this week on my sleep (got a new pillow today! lol).

I'm happy, it's just a mental thing where it feels like I lost more than that. I definitely don't want to loose any more muscle mass than I have to and have been lifting heavy to try and keep it up.

I hope everyone is having a great week so far!

Went out to the woods this weekend and my wife called me saying that the baby had Gastro. I felt guilty but at the same time relieved because I knew my mother-in-law would come over and Lysol the whole place.

Monday Tuesday and Wednesday my wife stayed home as she was sick with Gastro so I ended up taking care of my daughter alone Well she was resting and I was washing my hands like a madman and Lysoling everything I could see lol

Well yesterday as I tried to head out the house my butthole said no. I’ve been sick as a dog since 9 PM. Once again I know I will be at a drastic loss this week when that was not at all what I aimed for. FML

That was just poorly worded. I don't think I'm currently loosing any (based on strength and mirror), but it is possible on a cut and I don't want to exasperate that with lack of sleep.

Man Gastro is freakin nasty. I hope you all recover soon. My family and I were on our way home from vacation and about 2 hours from home it hit. This felt like some super-gastro variant lol. We made it to a hotel on the side of the interstate and hunkered down until the next morning when I could barely drive. The only one of us who didn't get it was our 1 year old (thank God).

Non official weigh in day but I've just reached my goal as of waking up a few minutes ago, so there's that

I'll update again tomorrow and keep going until the 24th when I'll post my last update for this thread, as I'm going to the beach house for the holidays and won't be dieting until I get back in early January, by dieting I mean diligently counting 2000kcal, I'll still eat sensibly and avoid junk food but it'll be ad libidum, and there'll be beer.

I'll pick up dieting again when I'm back home to shoot for 152lbs on the Jan/Feb thread, when i'll finally end this long ass cut. Uni resumes on the 17th of February so I want to get there by then, can't wait to see my friend's reactions when I'm back

I'm quite happy with my results this year, I've never been stronger or leaner, I'll probably finish the year at around 15% but want to get down to 12% before starting my 2020 bulk.

    Starting weight: 168,3

No worries! I figured most people only check this thread close to Fridays because of the weigh in, I do so myself too.

Glad you're doing better, I think starting med school this year and studying late ****ed up my sleep schedule, I used to be able to sleep for 8h no matter what time I went to bed, now that I'm back home and am able to sleep in because of vacation it seems I wake up naturally 5.5-6h later lol. I gotta get rid of the afternoon naps I got used to, maybe that'll help.

Still heading down. I am going to attempt to hit 220# by next week. I think the number is a little higher than it should be, ate a lot for dinner last night. I think if I get stricter, I can get close to 220# by next weigh in.

I usually stall at 230# and it takes a week or so to finally get into the 220’s. But this time I didn’t slow down. I was super excited to finally be in the 220’s again. Heading for the teens now!!!

Well im feeling alot better now! Just went for a InBody composition test. Bodyfat is slightly higher than what i was in my 2015 test with same weight. The test had me at 17.9% which means i may be losing more muscle mass than i want to. Mirror wise i look the same as in 2015 so perhaps the tests back then were off. I know the machine back then gave off readings on two occasions. Regardless, im on the right path and i will make small adjustments to my diet like more carbs/cycling. Also figured my testosterone levels may also be different than 5 years ago.

Gastro has me sitting at 191.5lbs this am which is alot more than what i wanted for a loss.

Another good loss this week (-2 lbs)! So close to getting back under 200, but it might not happen until the week after next weigh in ( I should actually be under 200 on Monday or Tuesday). With Christmas and our wedding anniversary next week, I will have some carby stuff (my moms sweet potato casserole is amazing!). Most of it will be water weight just like Thanksgiving, so I am perfectly fine with it. I'll still be counting calories and won't junk out.

Good to see so many posting up and doing great this week!

Well I ****ed up over the holiday less active more eating combine with the vacation at the start of my month and way too much drinking... the result? I have made 0 progress in December. On the upside im down 75-80 pounds on the year and I'm ready to get back at it. Think I'm gonna kick off 2020 with a no getting drunk January to get things back in swing since that's been my biggest issue. Also on the bright-side my noob gains for the year have been excellent not sure how much muscle was gained but things like bench I went from not being able to lift 185 to single rep max at 255 in 1 year so I cant complain too much. Good luck to everyone in the new year.
