Game play looks like a chore to play. Defiantly not for me. Very interested to read what the story is about though.

Alright, here is the ultimate litmus test for whether or not Death Stranding is for you:
~11 minutes of what a standard delivery, i.e. the bulk of the gameplay loop, is going to look like:
Push Forward + Hold R2/L2
Alternatively if you'd rather get a laugh for under 10 minutes of footage:
I'm not always a fan of Jim Sterling, but he has a rather succinct and amusing review that makes a good comparison through Red Dead Redemption 2 and its autistic attention to detail; if that became bothersome to you, then Death Stranding is going to be even worse for wear.
Interesting side note: Apparently all of those bunkers that you deliver packages to have entire underground cities in them. You don't actually get to visit, interact, or see them, but they are "there," hence why you're hauling ass across the country to connect the chiral network.
Yeah, the game looks stunning, but it seriously looks like a game with all of the "game" stripped away. Jim Sterling's review sums up nicely the growing impression I was getting from other reviews in that it's excessive layering of gameplay mechanics that in isolation might be annoying, but overall contribute to some scheme of balance, but together bog the entire gameplay loop down into managing tedium with little else.
It's weird reading that of all things, the boss fights and brief moments of combat are what feel like a distraction from the delivery because they're that unfulfilling. The story being likewise disappointing is also something that I didn't really expect, although towards the end of things, the general premise began feeling far less "difficult" to grasp; it's still abstract, but certainly nothing that I would personally find worthwhile given the massive time investment.
One of the highest points of praise seems to be the multiplayer component, but it's a backhanded compliment because it lies in alleviating the annoyances within the gameplay. It's like the core loop is so miserable that anything that can make it more bearable is appreciated, which maybe was the point of Death Stranding, but that doesn't make for a very fulfilling gameplay experience - especially if we're talking 40+ hours.
What I find most strange is how I absolutely support the game being made, but holy hell I would never in my life want to play Death Stranding unless I was hospitalized and it was the only game I was allowed play.I will stand firm, I refuse to kneel - The fury in me is divine
My dark grave awaits, my fate is revealed - But I'm not afraid to die

I'm in the "I love it" boat. I'm having fun, and I'm a solid 15-20 hours in.
That said, there is no way in FUK I'd take this over Silent Hills or more MGS. I'm all for Kojima flexing his creative juices and trying something new, but I really hope he sticks to his strengths and builds off his stealth history in the future.

Honestly, it's not the kind of game I'd recommend to the majority. It feels super niche. Remember back when MGSV released a lot of people liked it but criticized it because they felt like it was the same gameplay loop of infiltrating a compound, fultoning some nameless soldier, and stealthing out over and over again? This is similar except the gameplay loop is the deliveries. In MGSV, a lot of the fun came from figuring out how you wanted to tackle the compound with a lot of choice in a sandbox. This is the same except it's all about how you want to tackle the delivery. If you want an explanation, I put it in spoilers below. No actual story spoilers, just gameplay spoilers (vehicles, gear, stats management and whatnot). That said, IMO don't read it. It's been kind of fun finding certain pieces of gear I didn't know were in the game and using them to make deliveries easier/quicker.
Spoiler!
TL;DR
What I'm trying to get at is, a lot of the fun comes from the choice in traversal like how a lot of the fun in MGS comes from the choice in infiltration. Thing is, you have to enjoy the initial delivery gameplay loop first which is why I think it's niche. It's kind of a risky buy, so I'd probably recommend most just wait until it's cheap. If you are into the loop though (like I am), chit is addicting af.
EDIT: Better yet, rent it to try it out first. My only tip is to make sure you get through at least chapter 3. Straight up sprint through 2 ASAP to get to 3 and then come back for all the side deliveries.Last edited by AD117; 11-10-2019 at 08:01 AM.
