    Workout Shoes

I can't decide what shoe to buy for my workouts, and after Googling feel a bit confused by all the info.

I want a shoe to do all my weightlifting in (I do cardio elsewhere) but don't really want to have to change shoes mid-workout. My workouts are fairly standard stuff - squats, deadlifts, bench presses, overhead presses etc.

I see a lot of people saying heel raised shoe for squats, but flat for deadlifts, but this would mean changing up mid-workout. I really want to avoid this if possible.

Is there one shoe that would be a decent option for everything?

I'm happy with Nike Metcons, which work for everything, but I've never tried dedicated lifting shoes.

I really like my New Balance Minimus Trail shoes. Very light, take up little room, hard sole for heavy lifts. Very durable (had them since 2011)

Is the consensus that a raised heel is preferable? I see some info that says this is a must, but then others that say it's very bad for deadlifts. Like I've said though, I don't want to be changing shoes mid-workout

    I don't use a raised heel personally.

I only use weightlifting shoes for squats. Adidas Adipowers has served me well for the last 3 years.

Is there much difference between these and the AdiPowers?

I have old Powerlifts that I got super cheap & really like them. I am tight in the posterior chain so I decided it would help to have my heels raised for squats, but I didn’t want to buy a separate pair of shoes just for that. So I got a pair of heel wedges from Rogue & stick em in my shoes for squats; it was a cheap solution (relatively) & works great.

I think the heel is slightly higher on the Adipowers vs the Powelifts.

you really only need an elevated heel if you aren't flexible enough to do squats with a flat sole or if you are dedicated to doing Olympic Lifting. If you're flexible enough then you can look at most flat soled training shoes (Nike Metcon, New Balance Minimus, Reebok Nano, Reebok TR Lite 2.0) or even deadlifting shoes (Sabo deadlift) or even wrestling boots. I use NB Minimus (I like 2E), my son uses the Reebok TR Lite (original ones). If I were buying today I would look at Sabo or Nobull.

Nike Metcons are my favorite training shoes but if you're not gonna do cardio with these shoes, then I would go with something cheaper like Chucks unless you really have trouble squatting with flat shoes. I would rip the insoles out since they are somewhat thick for deadlifts (I have a thicker canvas version of Chucks which the insoles come out easily....in the more classic version, taking them out are a pain)

Nanos have been my go-to for years. I've had almost every generation except 3 and 6. Just got a pair of Nano 9 for $65 on a slickdeal. Tried Metcons but they were incredibly tight on the instep and a lot of metcons squeaked (did they ever fix that?)

I also like the discontinued Reebok Crossfit Transition. It's basically an olympic shoe / metcon shoe hybrid. Ugly as sin but I picked up a pair for $45 new when they were closing them out and really like them for leg days.

+1 for nanos, though since I train at home these days I most often lift barefoot.
