I am surprised he was found in Idlib of all places assuming that he would have had to cross hostile Syrian territory controlled by Assad, Kurds, Turkish forces, and rival militant groups. Or perhaps he fled to Idlib years ago but that makes no sense since ISIS never formally controlled any part of Idlib province.

ISIS’ roots were in Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi’s group “Al Qaeda in Iraq” (which formed when Zarqawi united radical and violent groups in Iraq during the war). They fought with U.S. and Iraqi forces throughout 04-10. It existed well before the Bin Laden raid. It became ISIS when it aligned with it’s Syrian offshoot “Al Nusra Front”. But because some Al Nusra front leaders did not want to merge with them, they took some members and formed ISIS. Their roots began to form when Bush thought it was a good idea to remove Saddam Hussein and start the Iraq war.
