Is 2x3 the way to go on a rack?

I'm debating between the Rogue SML-2 (3x3) and the S2 (2x3). The SML-2 is newer but I've heard the reduced 2" clearance from the 3x3 for re-racking the bar may be an issue. Any thoughts? Is 2x3 the way to go?

I prefer 2x3 for that reason.

It comes down to a training issue. How tight is your form and walkout.

I swapped from a Titan t-3 rack to a Rogue SML2 that I converted into a HR2 half rack later. For the first couple weeks I hated that thing because I was constantly banging into it. after the first couple weeks though I just got tighter better and couldn't tell you the last time I had any issues banging any plates on the rack. I do use a classic York bar or Ohio Power Bar for most rack work though so they both have wider collars on the sleeves. If I were buying new today I would go with the SML2 for future expansion needs you can go to either a full rack or a half rack. I would upgrade the jcups at time of purchase to the sandwich ones to give myself more clearance for things like multigrip bars later on.

I considered this when I bought my power rack, ended up with the 3 X 3 because they seem to come out with more accessories for it, and quicker--they go from Monster to Monster Lite and then on down. + the $ difference is negligible. I don't bang the rack, but my teenage son, who is more of a beginner, bangs it some. Doesn't hurt anything & it builds character!

    I just picked up the Rep PR5000V2. It's a 3x3 that's 47" wide - perfect. Sorinex is also 47" wide.

Rogue is 49" - Which depending on your barbell will have issues banging your plates while re-racking. These aren't major issues but with bar manufacturers(especially speciality bars) all doing their own thing, you'll run into conflicts.

I'd consider 3x3 king with 1" holes on all sides.

This might be a strange question but why does no one make a 2”x4” rack? Or does someone?

Indeed, but Exigo in the UK produce a rack with a 80mmx100mm 9 gauge frame and another European manufacturer, who's name escapes me, produces a rack with 80mmx120mm 7 gauge tube, possibly a little over engineered.

It's actually under engineered because all that extra material/cost serves no purpose. If I'd work like that I'd be unemployed.

"Over built", may have been a better expression.

I couldn't agree more, but some racks are really pretty.
It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.

It's easy to not be afraid of tigers when you're sitting in your living room watching a television program about tigers. When you're in the jungle where the tigers are, it's quite a different story.

I had a lower-end rack with narrow uprights; there was plenty of clearance for the plates, but I had to be careful with my hands when re-racking. Got rid of that 1 & got a Rogue with 3 X 3 uprights; now I don't pinch my hands, but the plates are closer to the uprights. It's all a trade-off, just like everything else.
