Why would anyone make their own computer when they can buy one for cheaper?

I'm trying to sound ignorant, but nowadays some Omen HP computers are actually CHEAPER than building your own. I added up the costs and can pretty much confirm this.

Why bother making your own then?

I'd pay at least $40 to watch a series about a man trekking around the world to actually build a computer from scratch without expert tools on hand.

Building a Computer allows you to understand each component and hardware that is in place.

When you build from scratch, you can easily upgrade what ever part you like up to standards.

Sometimes buying pre-made computers will have soldered hardware into the motherboard which won’t allow to upgrade some parts.

Yeah, but the downside is that if one part breaks, you have no idea that its THAT part. Pre built gives you warranties.

When I was growing up (and girls actually liked me a lot and I could date who ever I wanted) building your own could save you hundreds. Now it can't save you ****.

Not truly the case, Iv actually have a computer that I built for over 10 years and is still useable. Non of the parts have been broken, besides cleaning out the fan and upgrading the CPU and cooling system.

Like I said if you actually built a computer you can understand which part is damaged. Motherboard will also give you some type of Audio beep feedback on what is insufficient to start. You can also manually check each part and fix the problem.

OP you don’t go blind and suggest that one part is broken and the entire computer is at fault.

Some people enjoy the hobby aspect of it, others like to try to piece it out to get exactly what they want. There is no shame in buying a pre built rig, but a lot of people enjoy modding their systems and you can only configure so much when buying through HP/Dell and others. Yes some companies build out full on gaming rigs, but again there are a lot of people who don't want that and want to build it themselves and get exactly the setup they want. The prices can still in fact be cheaper if you price it out and shop around and this is similar to asking why some guys are into cars, they just are, leave them be.

I am pretty sure he wouldn't be able to build one, even if he wanted to.

Building your own PC gives you full control over everything in your system and is cheaper overall. Tons of prebuilts cheap out on PSU's, give you ketchup and mustard cables and don't even bother with proper cable management. It's much more satisfying to build it from scratch, examine and know exactly which parts are in the system, plan for the future by socket type and tier of motherboard, etc.

It used to be a lot more expensive to just buy a pre assembled one, but lately its been cheaper

Also you dont know every component thats gone in there, sometimes they'll cheap out on a power supply or ssd or something

Also also, you get to choose your own case

troubleshooting literally takes minutes. it's always usually 1 of three things. RAM, SSD/HDD, GPU. i think it's pretty fair to assume that those building their PCs have at least somewhat of a grasp on this.

I've been building since I was around 12 (first build was a 586 lolz)

So it's mostly a hobby for me. for the vast marjority of the time it's been far cheaper to build it myself too.

I think it's still cheaper to build if you are going for a mid to high spec gaming rig, but I haven't really looked at pre-built prices in awhile.

btw why is this thrad in misc it should be in the tech section. Could it be that you just wanted to turn it into a useless arguement thread where people bash each other? (like every single non-crew thread on the misc these days)

I wanted a quality power supply, quiet fans, a specific samsung SSD, bloatware-free winblows, and a case that didn't look like a transformer.
