    Saturday 9.26.2020: Bonds Traverse

    20 miles
10:45 total time (approx. 45 min total rest time)
    5 peaks:
    Mt Zealand 4260'
Mt Guyot 4560' (although not an official 4000' peak because it lacks the needed prominence from South Twin Mt)
    West Bond 4540'
    Mt Bond 4698'
    Bondcliff 4265'

I finally did it. This trek has been on my to do list for over a year since I first heard about it. The Bonds are a range of 3 peaks in the middle of a large wilderness area. There's a long open ridge walk in between the peaks with 360° views and cliffs right beside you. The views are supposed to be unsurpassed in all of the White Mountains. The only caveat is the remoteness of this range. No matter how you want to do it- a traverse or an out and back, it's a 20 mile journey. most people go halfway then camp the night, finishing the following morning.
Only fools attempt it in a single day...

With the amount of daylight getting shorter by the week, I saw a weather window on Saturday and went for it.
2AM wakeup, out the door at 2:30.
Met my old man at the ending trailhead @ 4:30 and planted my car. He drove me to the starting trailhead 40 minutes away.
5:16AM entered the woods in pitch darkness, backpack on and headlamp to illuminate the path. No turning back, no giving up as the car is 20 miles away and the only way to get there is up and over.
Made it back to my car just before 4PM.

Even two days later, my body is still absolutely wrecked. When I got home Saturday evening, every square inch of me ached. This is without a doubt the hardest and most physically (and mentally) draining thing I've ever done.

many pics and a vid to follow...

    Wednesday 9.30.2020- Chest & Legs

Body is finally recovering after that 20 mile excursion on Saturday. I've been hitting the foam roller and doing a stretching session every day since the climb.
Monday I was mobile but still pretty sore. Yesterday was much better so I opted to slam some weights this AM. Things felt decent.

I should also note that this week is a detox / cleanse week. No alcohol, no processed foods. Mon and Tues were both of full on vegetarian diet- fruits, nuts, veggies, rice, eggs etc. I'm gonna add a meat meal in Wed, Thurs and Fri. Body is feeling good, especially from no drinking, however I'm sure I'm in a calorie deficit which didn't help strength levels.

    Bench
    45 x 10
    45 x 10
    95 x 5
    135 x 3
    175 x 1
    190 x 5
    190 x 5
    190 x 5
190 felt heavy but I had no issues slamming out all 3 sets. Last rep felt like a grinder, but it actually went up pretty quick

    Split Squats
    45 x 5
    65 x 5
    75 x 5
    100 x 5
eased into these, unsure of how the legs would do. Figured I'd ramp up and stop whenever. 45 and 65 sucked but 75 felt great so I tossed on 100 and banged out a pretty easy 5er

    Calf Raises
    190 x 20 >> drop set>> BW x 20
    190 x 20 >> drop set>> BW x 20

    DB Flies
    17.5s x 20
slow with a nice stretch at the bottom

Thanks fella! Incredible views up there, the pictures don't even come close to doing it justice.
The long distance of that trip also keeps out the usual riff raff that are on the smaller mountains. Less crowds and the only ones up there are experienced and prepared.

Thanks fella! This whole trip was in New Hampshire. both starting and ending trailheads were about a two hour drive from my house. I'm working on a longer write up of the trek, more for myself to look at years down the road. I wish I'd done that more with experiences in my past but it's never too late to start.

It's a completely different world up there. Hard to describe the feeling, it just centers me. Stuff like that reminds one why we deal with all the responsibility and bullsh!t of the day to days.

    Monday 10.5.2020: Chest

Nice start to the week! It's been awhile since i've done a Monday session.

    Couple updates:

M-F last week I did a detox / reset kind of thing. No alcohol, no processed food. Did mostly a vegetarian diet: fruits, veggies, nuts, eggs. I had a one chicken meal Wednesday then a big steak dinner to cap the week Friday night.

Felt great throughout- sleep was 100x better without alcohol. Only sucky part was that when I was sleeping good it was so hard to get up at 4am hah
Weight loss is hard to gauge: I weighted in at 177.5 last Sunday morning before this started, however I was depleted as hell from that 20 mile traverse the day before. I'd guess my actual weight would be at 180 at the start.

Regardless, I finished at 175.0. Beer bloat around my midsection deflated some and my top 4 abs are popping pretty good.

Saturday I went out to eat for lunch and ate some crap along with some drinks. Then Saturday night I went bowling and got smashed haha
Sunday was much more low key- couple drinks with lunch then clean diet rest of the day. I'm looking to get my drinking back to where it was a few years ago- just when I go out.
Felt good to have two days of little to no activity. I really needed some extra rest to recoop from the previous trek. Hoping to get back after it with a 10 mile trip next weekend.

    Bench
    45 x 10
    45 x 10
    95 x 5
    135 x 3
    165 x 1
    195 x 5
    195 x 5
    195 x 5
Heavy but got them done. last rep on the final set was a grinder but I got it done. The bar is coming off the chest good but it's really slowing at lockout

    CGBP

Fukin alcohol man......Next time I'm social drinking I'm pacing myself better, the trick for me personally is just sip on a beer/mixed drinks cuz once those shots start happening its game over and I'll keep guzzling down the bews. Looks like you and I went full blown alcoholic status on Sat

Solid pressing volume, looks like the weight is increasing fast.

Nice detox to reload the alcohol right after 😂 anyway it’s needed sometimes to have a binge. Just to get it out of your system.

    Tuesday 10.6.2020: Legs

Back on the sober train! After going HAM on beers Saturday, I took it easy Sunday and just had a shot and 2 beers with lunch. Yesterday I didn't have a drop (almost caved near the end of the night but I held it on track).

Woke up with a ton of energy and went hard on the weights. I'm gonna pay for it later: My abs are already cramping after the wheel.

    Split Squats
    45 x 5
    75 x 5
    105 x 5
    105 x 5
    105 x 5
Felt good but man the last few reps felt like a ton

    Good Mornings
    45 x 5
    45 x 5
    65 x 5
    65 x 5
    65 x 5
never really got into this lift, but I'm gonna give it a go, even at lighter weight. Felt a great stretch on the hammies on these

    Calf Raises
    135 x 20
    185 x 20
    205 x 10
    135 x 20 >>>drop set>>> BW x 20
Changing this up a bit.... start light and work up to a heavier set with lower reps, then drop down for that light weight burnout and BW dropset.

    Ab Wheel: Kneeling rollouts
    x10
    x10
not even an hour removed from these and my abs are sore and twitching as I sit at my desk typing this. fuark

Haha yup, luckily I wasn't too hungover SUnday, just al ittle groggy. I usually don't get hungover bad unless I REALLY go overboard.

Thanks dude, pressing is feeling good. Getting heavy, but I'm hoping adding in a light day later in the week with some speed reps plus some choice assistance work will keep things moving.

Staying on track with a healthier diet and less drinking will help too.

I'm loving the fact that I sleep better sober, but cot damn that 4am alarm suuuuckkksssss

Went HAM on the beers Saturday, but I've been good since then. I gotta get back to my old ways of just drinking when I go out to dinner.

Nice work throwing in the GM they suck when you first start doing them. Almost as bad as squats in terms of soreness and you did them with split squats 😅. Nice session

It’s almost a good reminder when you drink hard that it sucks to train then when your sober and go holy crap I feel great.

Thanks dude! It'll feel good to have a decent move for the hammies and PC in the routine. Gotta get into better shape, winter climbing is coming! That pack will be getting heavier with gear.

I've got my eye on things, but hopefully when and if things calm down after the election, I might look at booking an out of the country expedition for early 2022. That will really be motivation to ramp up the intensity

    Wednesday 10.7.2020: Shoulders

Killer session today! Body & mind are feeling great with booze cut out. (I did have one tequilla last night since it's taco tuesday, but limited it to that).

My metabolism has ramped back up to old levels: I'm hungry 24/7. Eating a ton more calories instead of drinking them, and I'm looking leaner in the mirror every day.

    Seated OHP
    45 x 10
    45 x 10
    65 x 5
    85 x 3
    105 x 5
    105 x 5
    105 x 5
1st set of 105 was tough, very slow on last rep. The second and third set I hit my groove and threw them up no problem

    Speed Bench
    105 +60 chains x 3
    105 +60 chains x 3
    105 +60 chains x 3
    105 +60 chains x 3
    105 +60 chains x 3
haven't had the chains out in years! Quick pause on the chest then blast these up. Felt great, plus that sound!

    Shoulder Shocker Giant Set
    Seated Plate Front Raise: 25 x 10
    Seated DB Laterals: 17.5s x 10
    Seated DB Clean & Press: 17.5s x 10
    x 2 sets
felt good so I ripped 2 sets of this circuit. 2nd one was absolute murder. Rest paused through the last few reps of laterals

    bench set 4:
    PRs: Back Squat- 410x1 / Front Squat- 320x1/ Bench- 325x1 / Deadlift- 505x1

    Saturday 10.10.2020: Wildcats climb

    8.6 miles
    approx 3000 total elevation gain
5:05 total time, 20 min rest on summits

Sick climb! Started crazy early and went almost 90 minutes in the dark with just my headlamp. Good practice.
Quite pleased with my performance. Right around that 2mph mark which is awesome for climbing.

The Wildcat is a large mountain that has 5 different peaks along it's ridge, labeled A thru E peak. A and D are both official NH 4000 footers (B, C and E lack the required prominence to be considered more than sub peaks).
It's also a ski mountain so I was able to use ski trails and a maintenance road to gain the ridge right beside D peak. The ridge walk over to A peak was steep and rough. I even ran into some ice but not enough to need traction yet.
My hike time would have been even better if it wasn't for the rough terrain for the 1.7 miles on the ridge.

    views were plentiful

Nice kickstart to the week! I had a couple drinks the weekend but nothing crazy: just a few going out for lunch and then a bit of vino with dinner. Feels good not to be going overboard. Anxious for another week of gains!

rests were too short to get 8 on the last set lol tris were fried

Diet has been really clean and it has me feeling great. I'm trying to add in a few more calories for more of dat clean fuel. Midsection has slimmed down a ton, although I've still got some beer fat hanging around. When I first got back into the gym on the reg, my old inzer belt wouldnt even come close to closing- I would have had to move it at least 2 holes. Tried it this morning for the fuk of it and I can get it on and close it (although it's a little tight).
Shoulders and chest have been looking fuller.

    Split Squats
    45 x 10
    75 x 5
    110 x 5
    110 x 5
    110 x 5
hnnggg these torched the quads but they felt great

    Good Mornings
    45 x 10
    75 x 5
    100 x 5
    100 x 5
    100 x 5
oh lawd, my hammies just barely got back to feeling 100% after doing these last week. DOMs incoming...

    Calf Raises
    135 x 20
    185 x 20
    210 x 15
    185 x 20
    135 x 20
    BW x 20
very little rest other than changing the plates. Calfs got a sweet burn on

    Kneeling Ab Wheel Rollouts
    x10
    x10
    x10

Those are some heavy split Squats. Your warmups are my working sets lol. Isn’t it awesome what a cleaning up the diet does even if you think it’s good before.

Those splits were a b!tch! legs were crying by the 3rd rep of each workset
0-1 drinks a day has helped me more than anything. Feel like it took two weeks of that to finally get myself fully hydrated again

Nice sessions lately. 4am is wild. Back to back upper body workouts I bet your feeling it?

Great that the RDL didn’t hurt your hernia. That’s a big step right?
