a wild weight session appears!

Tuesday 5.26.202

Very low weight, low volume session but I need to start somewhere. Gotta be cautious heating it back up, I'm not quite a year removed from hernia surgery. I still get some pain in that area, but the doc says it's probably just scar tissue.

Stretching and band pullaparts to warm up

Squats
45 x 10
45 x 10
45 x 10
95 x 10
95 x 10
felt awkward at first, but actually pretty decent when I bumped to 95 pounds.

WG Lat Pull downs
70 x 10
70 x 10
70 x 10
slow, nice squeeze and hold at the bottom then slow neg

BB Calf Raises
95 x 20
95 x 20
95 x 20

That's it. Gotta start somewhere, and it'll probably be a lot of this: 30 min low volume a few times a week.
I want to do some benching, but my primary focus needs to be on legs, back and core for my mountain goals so I'm gonna add that in a little later once I get a good routine going.
Lighter weights, higher reps, probably tuesdays and thursdays so I'm fresh for climbing on the weekends.

I just ordered a pair of trail runners so I'm going to throw some weekly cardio in the mix, street running and on the local rail trail so I can simulate some rougher terrain.

Overall feels great, hoping the extra activity will really help on the weekend when I climb. My ascent was right around 1000' per hour last trek. Not bad considering how poor my conditioning is, but I really need that to be 1500+ an hour.

So its been over a year since you squatted? Or longer?

Yeah keep the weights light for sure given the hernia surgery, and be careful if it hurts! My gawd.

cot damn, this is becoming a routine or something!

Been hitting the stretching every morning and it's definitely helping my flexibility and stiffness. I need to dig my foam roller out of the garage.

Did some band pullaparts after stretching before getting into it.

Squats
45 x 10
45 x 10
105 x 10
105 x 10
105 x 10
felt damn good, took one video and I'm still getting sweet depth, well past parallel. light weight but hey, it's 105 pounds more than I squatted last week

WG Lat Pulldowns
75 x 10
75 x 10
75 x 10
sweet burn

BB Calf Raises
105 x 20
105 x 20
105 x 20

Bench
45 x 10
45 x 10
45 x 10
100 x 10
100 x 10
100 x 10
easy, felt great

Run
0.8 miles in 8:37

My new trail runners came yesterday. Went for a quick jog after lifting this morning. They feel great, can't wait to actually try them on some terrain other than sidewalk

Quick 1.25 mile blast before work this morning.

Not really a mountain, more of a hill, but it's a trail through the woods with some elevation plus roots and rocks to step on / over / dodge. 11 min up, 2 up top for quick pics then 10 down. I jogged some of it. Black flies and mosquitoes are out in force. Legs felt great even after the squat and run session yesterday morning.

weather was questionable in the mountains this weekend so no climbing, but that means I was fresh to get after a session this morning. Great way to kick off the week. I'm feeling in 10x better shape than I did two weeks ago.

warmup stretching / band pull aparts

Squats
45 x 10
45 x 10
115 x 10
115 x 10
115 x 10
+10 from last time and crushed them even easier. legs are feeling great

BB Calf Raises
115 x 20
115 x 20
115 x 20

WG Lat Pulldown
80 x 10
80 x 10
80 x 10

Bench
105 x 10
105 x 10
105 x 10

Road Run
1.00 miles / 10:21 min
felt better than last weeks run. made sure to get the full mile in. It was cot damn cold- I was sweating after the weights and I just went out in a T shirt to find it was 40° out! Downloaded a track my run app so I can get actual distances and times easier.

Killer start to the week. I'm planning on another weight session Wednesday and maybe a longer run Tuesday and a trail run Thursday. Hopefully the weather will be agreeable the weekend, I'm anxious to get into the mountains and see how the training is paying off.

Crushed a sweet run this morning, no doubt the best of my career.

2.60 miles in 27:33

Did a nice loop out by a local pond then uphill through a park before heading home. Another cool morning but I remembered to wear long sleeves.

The run felt great. My legs were fine despite lifting and running yesterday so recovery is on point. I was breathing heavy when I got home, but not sucking wind and dying. Conditioning is coming on quick!

I'm probably going to weigh in next week. I haven't weighed myself much over the past few years, but I always seem to be right in that 180-185 range. I don't pay any attention to diet, but it's not horrible. I've cut back on my drinking last week which is huge. I'm not proud to say that I've been a heavy drinker since 2016 when life hit me with that big speed bump.

I took yesterday off from weights and work after hitting it hard Monday and Tuesday. I did put in a long day at work that was mostly on my feet, so I didn't feel 100% fresh this morning. Still powered through a decent session with a short run after.

It looks like there's going to be somewhat of a weather window Sunday morning in the mountains, so I'm hoping to get at least a small climb in. I've got a 5mi round tripper and an 8.4 in the queue, so it will depend on the chance of afternoon thunderstorms as to which one I pick.

Squats
45 x 10
45 x 10
120 x 10
120 x 10
120 x 10
felt off through warmups, but not bad by the second work set

WG Lat Pull Down
90 x 5
90 x 5
90 x 5
90 x 5
90 x 5

Bench
45 x 10
45 x 10
110 x 10
110 x 10
110 x 10
felt easier than 105 did on Monday

Run
.98mi / 10:10min

Didn't rest much between weights and run and I could tell. Was right about where my pace has been, so I'll take it.

took the whole weekend off. Thunderstorms and crap in the mountains so no climbing.

Feels good to have a few solid weeks of workouts in, starting to becoming routine. I Bumped weight and lowered reps a bit this morning. Start pushing for some strength. My original plan was higher reps for that endurance, but I didn't think i'd take to running like I have (which has been way better for endurance than 10 rep sets)

Squats
45 x 10
95 x 5
135 x 5
135 x 5
135 x 5
easy but felt good to get a few more pounds on my back

Calf Raises

Decent little sesh today. Out of bed at 4am, coffee, foam roll, stretch then hit the weights.

I dug my old rumble roller out of the garage over the weekend, and holy crap I forgot how much that thing hurts/ feels good at the same time. I notice my flexibility getting better every day between the stretching and rolling. These old bones feel much looser and smoother now.

Squats
(warmups)
140 x 5
140 x 5
140 x 5
strong and quick. back is feeling good and more importantly, no squawking from where my hernia was

WG Lat pull down
90 x 7
90 x 7
90 x 7

Calf Raises
140 x 20
140 x 20
140 x 20

Bench
(warmups)
140 x 5
140 x 5
140 x 5

Run
1.02 miles in 9:09min (9:00/mile pace)
all time PR right there for a mile. Love seeing this time go down!

Friday 6.12.2020

Finally got out on the trail for a climb on Friday! Weather was beautiful- low 50s, little breeze at the summit and blue skies for miles. I climbed Mt Moosilauke in New Hampshire, the western most of NH's 4000 footers. This one weighs in with an elevation of 4802. I did a loop hike- took the main trail up to the summit, a secondary trail around to a spur called South Peak, then back down to connect with the original trail right by the trail head.

My conditioning work paid off in dividends- I smoked [b10 miles in 4:54! And almost 30 min of that was relaxing on the summit taking in the views. It was a pretty easy trail, but it was still a lot of mileage with some fair elevation gain. I'm definitely gonna turn up the difficulty notch for the next one.

Absolutely thrilled with the performance, legs felt fresh the whole way, back and shoulders were fine with a heavy pack (I still carried my full winter pack even though it was T shirt weather- gotta keep the core used to hauling all that gear!) I wasn't even that sore the following day which is awesome. I could definitely pull off a back to back right now.

Thanks my man, appreciate it!

So stoked at how well just 3 weeks of conditioning helped. I've got my sights set on an 11 mile trek this upcoming weekend over a bit more rugged terrain (and approx 1000 extra feet of elevation gain). If I can chew through that just as good, it's time to start planning that 21 mile trek with 9,000+ feet of elevation gain.

Welcome bro! Got dayumm that's a big hike to prep for lol

Do you notice when you take maybe three days off cardio it goes down? This is true for myself at least, I can't believe how fast I lose my cardio when I take a break. Strength seems to actually hold better. Weird.

I'll let you know tomorrow after I workout, I've been off since Friday haha

That 21 mile one in a single day is gonna be brutal. Some very technical trails at the start. I want to be able to crush it in under 12 hours

Skipped yesterday so I've had 3 days off in a row. It was a challenging weekend, funeral on Saturday which caught up with me sunday. Had a few more drinks than I should have Sunday evening, so I was dehydrated and felt like sh!t yesterday morning when I woke up. Glad I postponed the session because it felt pretty decent today.

Squats
145 x 5
145 x 5
145 x 5
smooth and fast

WG Lat Pulldown
90 x 8
90 x 8
90 x 8

BB Calf Raises
145 x 20
145 x 20
145 x 20

Bench
145 x 5
145 x 5
145 x 5
went up quick but it's starting to feel like I'm pushing some weight

Run
1.04miles / 10:29 min (10:04 / mile pace)

not a true representation: I got some new shorts and had to stop/ walk for nearly a minute to retie the drawstring so didn't start mooning passersby. Didn't feel like my best run, but it would have been close to that 9 min mile without the wardrobe malfunction

Plans for the week:
Wednesday: longer distance run, no weights. Might do that 2.6 mile loop I did a few weeks back. Maybe explore some of the trails.
Thursday: Off
Friday: Provided we shut the factory down on Thursday afternoon again due to lack of work, I'm gonna tackle a pair of mountains on Friday. looking at 11-12 miles with 4k of elevation gain

Jj! Always love when you drop in! Hope everything is going good for you and the fam (and the cows!)

That 21 miles is gonna be straight up brutal but I really want to challenge myself this summer and do it. Where it's such a long traverse (you need to leave a car at the other side or get picked up), there's not really a bailout point if you want to give up halfway. Gotta push through.

Cutting back has shown a lot of positives already. Sometimes I want to just stop completely, but there are a lot of occasions where I want to have one, dinners, social stuff.

I am laughing about your shorts malfunction. I suppose it was not funny. Not much worse than trying to run with your shorts around your ankles.
Let's see. My girls and I are good. Kyle is getting the cows in the divorce so I no longer have cows. It breaks my heart. Well not just the cows. But the whole thing. But I guess that is another story.
Are you able to do all this hiking close to where you live?

Good to see you doing some lifting. I am hoping to start some sort of lifting again next week. Anything is better than nothing I guess.

Run
2.87 miles / 31:32min / 10:59 min per mile pace

Longest run I've done to date, nearly 3 miles! Definitely room for improvement on the pace, but I'm happy that it didn't drift to 15min / mile with the longer distance hah

Aw Jani I'm sorry to hear that, that sucks. Dope and I were just talking about those damn speed bumps that life throws at everyone.

Great job on the 2.5 years sober! That's impressive especially if you were a heavy drinker. I'll look for your log to pop back up if you start to journal workouts again. It took me awhile to start again just mentally preparing for moving such tiny weight compared to what I used to, but I'm glad I did.

I do all my hiking in New Hampshire. Most trailheads are 1.5-2 hour drive (one way) so I have to plan for an extra 3-4 hours on top of my actual climb time.

Friday 6/19/2020: N Kinsman & South Kinsman hike

Beautiful day in the mountains yesterday. I did a morning out and back over North Kinsman and South Kinsman, both NH 4000 footers.

It was an even 10 miles that I finished in 6 hours on the nose. Approx 20 minutes of downtime on the summits. The trip involved going over the N Summit twice, once on the way in and once on the way out.

I had to work for these 10 miles: no easy roadwalk to up the stats like last week. This trail had some serious elevation gain in the 1.5 miles ascending to the ridge. Terrain was rough in areas.

I wore my full winter pack again so the back and legs got an extra workout.

Temps and humidity kept rising throughout the day, ending up in the 90s. I’m glad I got an early start!

Body feels good this AM, legs are tired but not sore. My upper back doesn’t even feel worked from carrying that heavy pack all day which is a great sign.

Cardio felt great for the most part, although I did start to get a little winded coming up the steeps. Legs were getting tired before anything else. Still work to be done, but I’ve made huge strides in just a month time (Memorial Day weekend hike over Liberty and Flume had similar mileage and elevation stats and it took me 8.25 hrs).

Views were incredible and there was even a throne constructed of stone as part of the summit cairn on South Kinsman.

No session yesterday- the alarm has gone off the past 2 Mondays after a 3 day weekend and I say fuk this, I'm sleeping more haha

Hit a good session today, and no issues getting up before 4am.

also to note: weighed in at 182.5 the weekend (compared to 185 the last time I stepped on the scale). Body comp is looking better- not as bloated around my midsection and my top 4 abs are visible even though I'm a fatass

Squats
155 x 5
155 x 5
155 x 5
felt great, 3rd set was the best

WG Lat Pulldown
100 x 5
100 x 5
100 x 5

BB Calf Raises
155 x 20
155 x 20
155 x 20
nice slow burn

Bench
150 x 5
150 x 5
150 x 5
no issues tossing these up

Run
1.04 miles / 9:41 min
9:17 / mile pace
just a hair off my best, so not bad after 3 days off. Felt good the whole way.
PRs: Back Squat- 410x1 / Front Squat- 320x1/ Bench- 325x1 / Deadlift- 505x1

Run
3.01 miles / 33:44 min
11:11 mile / minute pace

New PR for distance, and holding steady around that 11min / mile pace for a longer run.

Felt decent, but I was running out of steam big time for the last 3/4 mile. Don't think I've ever been that sweaty before hah

Evil hike today! I climbed North and South Twin (both NH 4000 footers). 11.2 mile round trip. Crushed it in 6:23, and 30 minutes was relaxing on the summits taking pictures, chatting with other hikers etc.
The views were absolutely stunning. South Twin is nearly 5000' with a 360° view. The vantage point is right in the perfect spot to get a view of all the major ranges in NH. Just incredible.

Unlike the past few hikes where I feel ready to collapse when I get to the car, I felt like I had a bit more in the tank. Great sign considering this is the longest one I've done this year.

I have my eyes set on a long one (20+ miles) for this week, however there's rumor of a lot of thunderstorm activity all week which might put it on hold. I don't want to be on an open ridge 10 miles from the car in a lightning storm!

(FYI- I got back to the car Friday and about 10 minutes into my drive home it started pouring like a mofo- dodged a bullet there!)

Great session this morning, especially coming off a 3 day weekend break from work. I managed to roll myself out of bed at 4 to get after it. I decided to skip the post lift run this morning- I'll hit it on fresh legs tomorrow!

Squats
165 x 5
165 x 5
165 x 5
feeling heavier but no issues. Makes me nervous about my hernia repair when I grind out a tough set. Still beltless, still short rest breaks

WG Lat Pulldown
100 x 5
100 x 5
100 x 5

Calf Raises
165 x 20
165 x 20
165 x 20

Bench
155 x 5
155 x 5
155 x 5
these felt awesome, nice and smooth

Morning Run
2.57 miles, 25.38min
9:59min / mile pace

huge min/ mile pace PR for a longer run. And it was actually better time than this because I stopped for over minute to watch some deer cross the road in front of me. The run felt great- I only started to feel myself slowing down the last mile or so.

That 360° view looks killer dude. I can see your squats are going up pretty fast too, in b4 you're repping 2 plates again EZ. Running, hiking with a pack, lifting weights....Got duyum you're a machine! You must be in the best shape of your life no?

Thanks dude! I'm getting nervous with the heavier squats. I'm thinking about talking to my doc before I take it too much higher just to make sure everything will be ok with the hernia repair.

As far as conditioning, endurance and stamina- yes probably best shape ever.

As far as body composition and strength, not even close- I was way stronger and leaner in 2014-2016

Smart thinking dude, yeah I would be hesitant as well. Let us know what the doc says. And if he says no lifting I'd opt for another opinion. Remember my go to midsection strength exercises are front squats and ab wheel (standing ab wheel when you get more advanced). Those two exercises alone should make your midsection strong as hell and prevent further injury.

Do you feel better having more stamina/endurance/cardio? I think when my cardio is top notch I feel the best physically and mentally. Don't get me wrong strength training generally gives me a better endorphin high. But as far as being leveled out longer and feeling overall physically better I'd say having my cardio on point is key. There's definitely a happy medium between the two.

Much respect again for lifting seriously after an injury.
