    F150 or Tacoma?

Need a new mostly-work truck. The 2.7 ecoboost I drove impressed me and they had a crew cab red one I liked but I don't know if the twin turbo is trustworthy longterm. Toyota wise I'm just going to get the crew 4wd SR model (29.5OTD) and a friend is giving me his TRD takeoff wheels/tires/suspension for free so it won't have the poverty wheels.

Thoughts? I know the Toyota is probably the smart bet however the Ford had a lot more vroom.

edit: has to tow a small enclosed trailer, approx 6k so should be doable with either.

Weird comparison your trolling about. Tundra/ F150 is a comparison. Tacoma/ranger is another. Tacoma f150.....apples and oranges

Had four ford p/u ‘s so far. All trouble free

I like the room better in my Ford . Gets awesome mileage with my eco boost , even better than my 2008 Mazda truck that had virtually F-all for room .
Pulling a trailer all the other trucks fall on there face mileage wise ,whereas the eco boost has the turbos helping .
Was a GMC guy most of my life .but have no regrets with my last 3 Fords

F150 for work truck. Toyota Tacoma for resale/life long truck and hippie status.

I love both honestly but wouldn't buy a tacoma for a work truck.

F150 if you are towing and such. 6,000 isn't exactly a light tow either and I'm fairly certain that is on the edge of maxing the tacoma's capabilities. It won't hold up well to use like that. The 2.7 EB can tow up to 9,000 or at least the newer ones can. And with the bigger truck it will handle a heavier trailer better in basically every way.

    This isn't a fair comparison.

But if you're towing, the F150 hands down. Toyotas have weak ass payload capacity.

F150. ~6k trailer would be max or close to max for tow capacity on the Taco
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit softly.

Apples and oranges. I have a 2019 f150 lariat and enjoy it. But it's big enough in the back for two kids. Hell it is so roomy inside, we take it on family trips. Couldn't do that with a Tacoma. If I wanted a smaller truck though, I'd probably look at the Tacoma.

For what its worth to you for Ecoboost longevity...

I daily drive a 2012 F150 with a 3.5l Eco... 166k miles (100k tuned)… Averages 20.5mpg in Houston traffic... And have yet to crack a bolt on the long block for any repairs aside from oil changes and plugs. Tossed it on a dyno just for $hits since I had already paid for the session for my 5.0 before I windowed the block...

Yeah that gas mileage just seemed a bit better than a 4WD 3.5 is getting mixed.

It shouldn't matter though right? unless hes got 4WD engaged in town which would be silly... or does having the components for 4WD capability actually affect gas mileage that much?

I have seen up to 24mpg on a road trip but I generally drive pretty conservatively... like cruise control set to 60-65 not in a hurry. But I have also seen some MPG variations from not only 87-93 but $hit tier gas as well. I primarily fill up with Shell 93 , run Fuel system cleaner through it at every oil change and put in a catch can to fight carbon build up so many DI engines tend to start suffering from in high mileage. Ran a borescope down into the cylinders and rolled the motor over last time I did plugs and valves looked fairly clean. I think I am going to go ahead and do new timing chains and tensioners soon just to be on the safe side so I will get a better look at everything then to see if all that crap I am doing is actually working or not.

Rotational mass , while the 4WD may not be engaged still more moving parts in the drivetrain to lug around. Although , the one time you NEED 4WD all that $hit goes out the window... lol. I was originally leaning that direction myself but in reality the 2WD more than does what I need to do.

Ahh I didn't realize there was additional weight rotating even when in 2wd mode. Makes sense though I had always assumed the additional weight might make a difference or something.

You need a truck to race in Houston. That town is not sports car friendly! My car was not happy about all the potholes and cracks.

Bro it's actually the additional height in a 4wd truck that produces the poorer gas mileage to its 2wd counterpart. The additional height creates additional air resistance.

    F150 for sure.
6k behind a tacoma would suck in comparison.

f150 and it isn't even close. There's a reason ford sells almost a million of them a year and toyota sells 100k

I am a big Toyota fan, current truck is 2018 Tundra Platinum (have had two other tundras, and two Tacoma’s previous). That being said....

F-150 by a large margin over a Tacoma. The 2.7 absolutely romps. My buddy has one, and I can’t believe how quiet / smooth / powerful it is for a small motor. He gets mid 20’s for mpg, tons of comfort, tons of room.

Take a look at all the complaints on the current gen Tacoma. Folks hate the motor and transmission. Along with the carried over lack of tech / brutally low seating position / poor mpg / etc.

    Just fyi, the 2.7 is a V6.

Another vote for the F150. I have a buddy who owns a company running about 20 of them and he keeps buying Ford over and over. You can config it in about every way imaginable for a work truck, daily, etc. Towing 6k is no problem for it at all.
