Is boxing the best form of self defense?

Excluding weapons, running away etc.

I imagine it's a great way to adequately protect yourself. There's some other martial arts like Judo, Muay Thai and BJJ that would probably be pretty useful, but I don't know enough about them and IMO, I think boxing takes the cake.

Maybe I'm being idealistic, but can you imagine boxers getting confronted on the street, it must be easy work for them. And I don't even mean the big guys, relatively "small" guys, middleweights (160lbs) like Canelo and Gennady Golovkin. Again, excluding the scenario that they're confronted with weapons or seriously outnumbered.

The reason for me asking is that I'm quite an introverted and docile guy. I randomly think of these scenarios where I'm confronted and I end up being too chicken **** to defend myself against someone trying to mug me for example and then I end up either getting my ass whooped or just punked. I'm going to pick up one of these arts in the future, just wondering your opinions?

No. Krav Maga in my opinion is the best form because it's a hybrid so you get the best parts of all disciplines and taught how to use them in a practical manor in addition to dealing with weapon threats/attacks but that isn't until later on in the system. But really, the best style of self defense is the one that works for you so try out different styles and you will find out pretty quickly which ones click for you.

The people who denigrate Krav Maga have never looked into it or even taken a class. I've been training in Krav Maga for 7 years going on 8 and it is legit. It's not a martial art it just gets lumped into that category because it's easier than explaining what it is, a self defense system.

In the end the answer is "it depends on the circumstances". There is no answer because every encounter is different. Train in the discipline that keeps you engaged and keeps you coming back.

Yes Ive heard the problem there is finding legitimate instruction there seems to be a large variation between schools and its a great system but its getting watered down.

Boxing isn't so much the art of striking, it is also the art of dogding/covering from strikes, so I would say it's probably the most useful skill to have.
It is also rather easy to get better than an untrained individual in a couple of weeks.

But it depends on a lot of factors IMO. Bodytype would be one. If you are a huge guy, you can neutralize an an untrained oponent in a grapple without much training. If you are a small guy, you need great technique before grappling becomes an option.

it really doesn't matter which discipline you favor, if you can't take a punch you're screwed

if you can take a punch, then any type of grappling skill would be beneficial

Sadly that is true. A majority of the organizations like Krav Maga Worldwide, Krav Maga Alliance are legit but sometimes instructors who are affiliated with them tend not to hold up the standards set by the founders of each organization instead they care more about quantity over quality. The two most creditable organizations are Krav Maga Global and Israeli Krav Maga Association and the two most legit and creditable instructors are Eyal Yanilov founder of KMG, Haim Gidon of the IKMA and his 2nd in command so to speak, David Kahn who heads up the IKMA's schools in the US.

The IKMA was Imi Litcenfeld's original organization and it's currently being run by Haim Gidon who is Imi's oldest still training student. David Kahn is the chief instructor of that organization in America because essentially the HQ is based in Netanya Israel.

The defense aspect of boxing is good too, blocking and head movement.

As a boxer, I’d say no. It’s definitely effective and helpful, but your best bet is to fight as dirty as possibly in a self defense situation.

I looked into Krav Maga but honestly it’s just not fun enough to me. I can approach Muay Thai and bjj as an athlete and enjoy it as a sport. I couldn’t do that with Krav Maga and would probably end up dropping out.

I’ve been mostly focusing on bjj since that’s what my oldest does and we practice some drills together etc.. but the gym I go to offers Muay Thai for only 20 bucks a month more so I’m trying to get into it twice a week.

I probably would prefer boxing but I assume Muay Thai is at least comparable in training in striking. Any thoughts on that from anyone ?

- tons of people around
- alcohol flowing

Now think about the fight itself:

- posturing
- shoving
- then wild swinging

at this point, a couple of things can happen:

- it gets broken up by others
- the two start wrestling
- it gets taken to the ground where not much punching is thrown but moreso jockeying for position.
- or others get involved

you can take care of the problem in the first part where you're still standing and throwing punches and drop the guy

or if you don't, wrestle and subdue the guy/get position to KO his ass.

if you think boxing is the best for self defense you have never been in a fight

in a fight whoever can get the person down on the ground first wins. they don't teach you anything about how to fight on the ground or what it's like to be attacked from the lower body in boxing. in a fight people aren't ****ing boxing with boxing rules and all that. it's all out. maybe only a few professional boxers can go against someone in MMA. like the heavyweights.

wrestling is definitely one of the top for self-defense in a street fight

the defense aspect of boxing won't help in a street fight. it helps if the person you're fighting think fights are all about punching the face which is what a simpleton would think.
