Bad idea for me, I'm obsessive about rough housing, I'll either hurt myself or someone else (mostly the former, as I'm not as tough combat wise as I think I am).

I don't care about running with or catching a ball to score, I only care about stopping another person or running "through" someone or more than one. A hard hit is more important to me, but a "clean" hit at that. I see alot of dirty B.S. on the pro field these days.

45 yrs old here. I currently do not and will never compete in any sports competition or get on a stage. I enjoy lifting weights for how it makes me feel and look. That is all.

I care only a little about looks. I lift for general strength and fitness. I played pickup basketball a few times a week for 20+ years. I still run and stuff. Have done several marathons, three ultramarathons (longest 50 miles), and two triathlons in the past few years. But I don't lift specifically for those sports really. I just figure if I'm going to be big, I may as well be strong.

I was a D1 high-jumper, 1981 conference champ in what is now the Horizon League, but I suck at basketball. I can run and jump and play defense, but have no knack for offense in spite of playing regularly for decades.

My son was a D1 All-American in the decathlon at 6-6, 230 lbs and was pretty much great at every sport he tried the first time he tried it. But he chuckles about a guy on his college team who was the conference champ in the 400m and long jump and could jump out of the gym but wasn't coordinated enough to dunk and looked silly playing basketball. But that's mostly because he'd never done it.

very Pharisaical question, demagoguery basically. I deal with it all the time. For a lifter, you have no functional strength. All strength is functional and you don't have much of it, because dancing around does not build it. You need to throw "pig iron" as you put it. You as a basketball player will not be able to outpace skier, will you? It is just a set of different skills. Bodybuilder in your basketball team is like a hard core olympic swimmer running a biathlon race. I bet none of hard core lifters do it strictly for the looks, it is their sport, and separate skill set too.

I have always tried to be athletic by doing things such as swimming running cycling water skiing weightlifting etc. I do push-ups pull ups etc. However in recent years I felt less athletic. Therefore I took up taekwondo and I believe it has helped me become more athletic.

In my view the true test of fitness is how well you can move your own body through space.

I want to look good but I want athleticism to back it up.

I know the word 'functional' has all sorts of special meaning these days, but I'm too lazy to care I guess. I personally don't think push ups or pull ups are anything unique for lifters. I imagine most lifters do some form of body weight exercises as a supplement in their program. As for turkish getups, I've done them and find them awkward though not particularly difficult. Hanging leg raises to the bar and GHR to be better for filling my gaps. As for the dude with no basketball ability talking smack, call him out. Maybe he trash talks to hide his insecurity about his poor game. People do all sorts of strange things to cover up flaws/weaknesses and we all have them.

I find pushing the iron makes it easier for me to run, jump, and move in general (regardless if it is in basketball, racquetball, on the track, in MMA/BJJ, or on long drives...). Looking good and feeling strong is important to feeling confident. Nothing makes you look better to others than feeling confident. So in the end, strive towards whatever makes you feel the best about yourself (find your mojo). I personally feel best knowing i can run/jump/punch/wrestle as good as I look, so for me both (at least in my mind, which is all that matters).

W/O a doubt being strong helps w/BJJ. Even if that means being able to just survive. "Strength is never a weakness".

I've been working out since my teens. It has served me well. I'm sure some people do it to attract partners but it's something more people should do for health purposes. Just look around: obesity is getting out of control.
