Angry I'm f'ing done with auto repair shops

My power steering pump on my car took a chit the other day. I can do the work myself, but time is valuable, i got bullchit going on, and I'd have to rent a few tools. A remanufactured pump is like $50 on rockauto and a new one is about $80. I call this place up nearby and ask if they can install one i bought. Dude seemed reasonable on the phone and said, "Well if we install one you buy there is no warranty. If we install ours (from our reputable supplier) it and the labor comes with a 3 year 36,000 mile warranty".

My research online showed the 3rd party pumps to be very questionable in quality. So i thought... fk it... 3 year warranty... total cost probably $350-$400 ($100'ish pump & 2-300 for labor).

I get to shop and the guy mentions a diagnostic test price... but that it will be credited against any work i decide to do. My red flag alarm should of went up right there.

Dude comes back with a quote of almost $700.

    DA FK

    This job is essentially:

    - Take off belt
    - 3 bolts to remove pump and pulley
    - Special tool to remove pump from pulley
    - Reinstall
    - Vacuum out system
    - Put belt back on

...no way this should take in imbecile like myself more than 2 hours. A pro ... 1-1.5hrs.

Mf'ers price for his remanufactured badass supplies pump = $180

... and fkn $500 in labor. GTFO

The fkin diagnostic bullchit trick ensures they win either way. You don't want to pay their ridiculous price then they still get that free diagnostic money.

I seriously hate dealing with businesses these days. EVERYONE is always trying to pull some fkery.

I remember years ago I got pretty pissed cause I had a check engine light.

I went to Autozone they told me exactly what the code meant.

Take it to mechanics and tell them what AutoZone said and they do some BS diagnostics on the whole car.

They tell me all this other stuff that's wrong with my car like tires were a little worn, etc.

And if I used their services the I believe $50 that I used would be credited towards the work they did.

    I was ****ing livid.

when I asked the fuk head if he would please just do pads only he actually refused me that option. Strong everything.

thing is, knowing a repair is done right on something as important as your car is priceless.

if your time is so valuable you might think about driving a car under warranty

I wrote about this in different thread about no such thing as too much money or fuk you money, there is always institutions of society, public and private as well as people that will always try to fuk you over, no matter how much money you have.

Second OP, legal contracts have had much more evolutionarly change in society than most inventions. You dont need to draft legal documents for every interaction you have but focus on the spirit of legal contracts and work from there. Work out all the details in what happens at every point of the situation and what is the remedy for it.

In this example, tell autoshop tell the amount you want to pay, say $350. Then tell them you are going to plan contingencies, if in any case, the amount goes over $350, the business transcation is void and you will walk away and offer $50 cancellation fee for their time. If they screw you over, great it costs you reasonable $50, if not you get to ground your expectations and get product you want

Never agree to let someone work on your car if the first thing they say is "we need to do a diagnostic test".
If you agree'd to the work before you even show up they should just do it and move on.

lol I had a buddy tell me he went to a shop to do his brakes, the guy quoted some ridiculous price to which my buddy declined, but then the shop refused to give him the keys back because "legally I can't let you take the car back on the road with the brakes like that"

of course he got his car back after some legal advice...

honest helping shops are the minority. I too tend to do most if not all the work on my cars. a few times, time has led me to the shop. one place was honest when my car was surging and actually didn't charge me because of a crazy situation that happened. other than that, i have ONE place for tires, ONE GUY for (now) clutch replacements, and one guy if worse comes to worst and I can work it out to drive the distance to him. i had a mini dealership almost nearly drain my whole bank account over a waterpump. i argued with them over the phone and got it reduced. thanks, but i wont return.
but **** them. tell him his prices SUCK and so does his method of getting your money. just fix it yourself and save hundreds

I bought a car 3 years ago. Notice some minor shaking while braking and 10k miles later, violent shaking. Turns out the rotors were defected and I need new rotors/pads. Dealer tells me that I warped them through bad driving habits. Bill is $1600 for the rotors/pads. Wear and tear item so not covered under warranty. I spent the next week researching metal warping temperatures and other science man things to prove they are full of chit. Brought in a binder of literature explaining what it would take to warp high performance rotors.... eventually they covered it. Felt good man.

This is why I am buying new cars now, and getting rid of them before the warranty expires. The hassle is not worth my time. But here's what you do, never go to a franchise of any kind. Find an independent mechanic, the smaller the business the better, have him give you pricing for the work at hand, you can haggle. Once the price is correct and in writing, including the warranty terms, you can go ahead and have the work done, once the work is done and satisfactory, you pay them and also tip them. The tip ensures the mechanic will remember you next time you need work done, and it will also ensure he gives you priority.

I found a mechanic here in VA, the first time I ever used him was because I needed the clutch on my car replaced. He charged me 10 hours of labor, plus $500 for the clutch, flywheel, and a few other things while I was there. The price was obviously more than what it would have cost to do it myself, but the price was also fair, and about 1/3rd the price that the dealer wanted to charge me, the total bill came out to about $1400, I gave him $1500. From there on whenever I needed something, he would give me priority. If I needed an oil change, I would just show up with my own oil and filter, and he would stop what he was doing in order to take care of me.
"So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about their religion; respect others in their view, and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and its purpose in the service of your people. . . . 1) jobs have book time to do. You multiply it by their labor rate which is clearly posted
    2) read yelp reviews on a shop
    3) diagnostic is to verify what the problem is. Use that report and go to whoever you like.
    4) ensure shop VERIFIED the problem in their report. Avoid parts changers.

Auto tradie here, yes a lot of shops suck. I would never go to a chain shop, they're notorious for screwing people over, and only care about hitting their ever climbing sales goals. Some dealerships can be okay (srs), but most indie shops are actually decent.

I do all my own work with the exception of tires and alignment, which I know of one shop to take care of it that always did good by me.

srs question - do you guys even own a torque wrench? I'm convinced you fukkers go wide open with the 1/2" impact. Tighten until it starts to loosen, then back it off 1/4 turn. Double torque on oil drain bolts. Slather in JB Weld as needed.
