    Cable or lever belt squat

Is there one that’s better than the other ?
I know lever the weight depending on where the loading horns are in relation to where you clip on can differ hugely and I was always under the impression that a cable such as west side athletic platform is a truer weight? Might have that totally wrong.

I had a cheap one made last year lever style and it wasn’t great. I’ve decided to spend a bit more and get something better build quality. I spoke with a fabricator who also trains strongman and he can make me a cable model. He showed me pics of one he made for himself and it’s impressive but large. About 80” long which will take a big chunk of my garage space. He said the platform is around 45” but he could shorten down to about 25-30.

For those with cable how important is a large platform. I think really I would belt squat, march on spot. Maybe step ups onto plates. Is the large athletic plate only needed if you want to do other sport specific drills like MMA wrestling manoeuvres etc.

    I would appreciate everyone’s thoughts.
Squatmax md is not an option as he won’t ship to UK.

I make my own equipment. I settled on just the plate loaded version. I started out with the machine using the cable off the machine. Too 'spongy'. I put 2 sets of handles on it. One for standing straight up and the other set to bend over and use it. Not true weight, but I'm 71 and I don't need all the pressure. The commercial belt isn't that great. It isn't contoured over the hip area. Eventually I might cut the sides down a bit.

Rio, I always like seeing equipment people here have made. Could you get a video of it in action and post it? Thanks.

They won't let me do it yet. Some rule about not being able to post a hyperlink until I get 50 posts.

Not sure what you're saying. The Belt Squat Machine is just connected to one of the pieces of square tubing on the back of that Body Solid machine. It is a lever mechanism.

Cable all the way for the 1:1 ratio and consistent downward force. The Rogue Rhino looks to be the best small footprint design.

I've replaced almost all my Rogue equipment with used commercial, but Rogue really nailed it with the Rhino. I used it at Rogue HQ and it was great. And compared to the Westside ATP or equivalent, it's positively compact.

I've used both including one of the original cable units made by Westside that a buddy owns. I like the cable better but honestly it's real close and if money is an issue at all...lever which is what I own now (Mech6 version - I use it inside my rack with rack handles and it stowes vertically at the back). Otherwise I would do the Rogue in a heartbeat...compact and great design. Mech started that project at just the right time.

I have had and used both and personally prefer the leverage version. The westside one I had fixed me too much in place and had a bit of friction. I could care less about 1:1 load and more about proper tension through muscles through entire ROM. To each his own
