Cali passes law allowing student athletes to make loot off their name

"The California State Assembly unanimously passed a bill on Monday that will allow student-athletes in the state to profit from the use of their own name, image and likeness, according to USA Today.

The Fair Pay to Play Act passed 72-0, with seven members not voting, and now should go to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s desk. It was amended after it passed the State Senate, however, meaning it will need to return there for a re-vote before it can go to Newsom. The original bill passed in the Senate 31-5, and is expected to pass again.

Should both the Senate and Newsom pass the bill, it will become law on Jan. 1, 2023."

    Agreed with most them comments...

Especially if you're an upcoming BIG BIG star.... Then you're going to go to a California College to earn that $$$
BUT - It'll make it extremely unfair to the rest as it's essentially paying your way to success.

Should make it a Nationwide rule. It's only fair... Why not get paid for your talent?.. They work hard for it.

I mean does this law supersede the NCAA? The NCAA is a private organization right? Which means if they say you can't make money off your name or you're not eligible to play you can't make money off your name. Right?

We limit what private corps can do all the time. More importantly, i believe NCAA files for non-tax status, which puts them under the government's purview.

This is my understanding as well. I don't think this law has any change on NCAA being able to say "Great, you took X amount of dollars, you're suspended indefinitely from all NCAA activities." Maybe it allows them to play games in CA? But they won't be able to play in other states? Who knows, but as usual, I'm guessing this is California being symbolic and useless as usual.

NCAA is gonna have to kick out all the Cali teams. Thats a lot of revenue the NCAA will be losing just to stop players from making their own money. More likely, is that the NCAA will be forced to change their own policy. Kicking out all the Cali teams and watching all the top recruits go to Cali are both untenable situations. They'll be forced to let all players make money off of endorsements

That's what it seems like. After reading the head of the NCAA basically said California teams won't be able to compete for championships.

yeah i'm kinda curious if that will be the hardline stance, just reject all CA schools from the NCAA

football's the obvious cash cow here so i wonder if they'll be OK with relying on their southern US powerhouses to make up for not having the CA schools in

Damn lol just looked this up. Thought college bball at least brought in a decent amount due to march madness but it's not even close. 32 mill vs 8 average school revenue from the sport lol. Yeah they'll get by just fine not allowing Cali teams to compete.

Other states could follow suit because they have 3 years. On top of that these states could run their own competing organization that gets all the top recruits. It will be interesting to see how things shake out.

This will trigger the NCAA to go the supreme court...

Personally I don't think STUDENT athletes should be getting paid. When you add in "free" housing, tuition, food, access to the best tutors, gym access, best class times, clothing, etc those kids are getting a steal for 3-4 years. I know several people that played sports in college (D1) and they always had free chit. New headphones, iPads, warm ups, etc. Add in the fact that we have title 9 which makes it a mess, it's just not worth paying them all. If you pay the whole football team, including the 3rd string players you have to pay the same to the cross country, soccer, baseball, etc. If the NCAA changes policy, where will the money come from? The conferences? The schools themselves? Texas and Alabama is filled to the brim with cash can afford to pay all the student athletes something, but can the D3 schools can? Probably not.

You sound like a slave owner. Brb don't complain about being free because we feed, bath and house you. STFU anyone should be able to make money off THEIR OWN NAME. ZION made the NCAA billions last year. PLEASE GIVE ME A LOGICAL EXPLANATION WHY HE CAN'T SIGN ENDORSEMENT CONTRACTS IN COLLEGE and make money of his own name lmao. They are not talking about the colleges paying athlete, they are talking about athletes having the freedom to get endorsement, deals and make money off their own brand/name

    sorta this.

basically what's going to happen now is this will end up in court again but with the state of Cali vs the NCAA. this will either die or end up granting this permission to all players in the country. only time will tell.

Explain to me why I can't sign a Nike endorsement in college if im good enough? A superemy talent musician that's playing for the school is able to sign endorsement deals if they're good enough. GTFO. Why can't Zion get a Nike deal in college?

If Zion wanted to make money he could've played in Europe, but he went to Duke for camera time.

You dont pay people in 'stuff'. How upset would you be if your employer said he's gonna pay u in room and board with you not being able to negotiate at all?

And this isnt even fighting for the school to pay them. This is saying a player can make money off themselves

He was already projected a top 2 pic before Duke. He had LeBron hype in high school. He would have signed a big endorsement contract regardless of if he went to Duke. I guarantee more people know the top 10 prospects coming out of high school then 99.9% of college program programs lmao

he can make all the money he wants. he just can't do it while going to school.

some times folks can't have everything they want.

what about the kids that can't get endorsement deals and have to pay for school? they're basically playing the same game with the guy while having to pay for him to be at school.

I think a happy medium might be fine you can get paid but you have to pay for out of state tuition even if you're from in state.

It's college sports. I didn't get paid to study, why should they? If those players wants to make money, good for them go do it in Europe. However, they signed a contract with the schools exchanging services (playing for the school) for "free" stuff. Even full ride academic kids doesn't get half the free chit the baseball team at Alabama gets. College athletes at some schools gets the red carpet thrown at them. Don't give me this BS.

    .
I think a happy medium would be the conferences gives each athlete a $2,000 stipend per semester. That will make it "fair" for all the teams.
