Spud Inc Safety Squat Bar Strap

Has anyone tried this new strap from Spud Inc?

It's meant to attach to any straight bar and replicate the feel of a SSB on your shoulders.

I have not tried this thing, and I certainly don't want to bash Spud, Inc--I've never heard a bad thing about them or their products.

That said, an actual SSB gets the weight out in front of your body a little. SSB squats are a little like a front/back squat hybrid movement. It doesn't appear that the Spud strap will do that.

However, the Spud strap could be a great option for guys who just want to do back squats but have shoulder issues that prevent them from holding a straight bar in place.

You could always pick up some webbing from a place that sells rock climbing equipment and make something similar......it wouldn't be nearly as easy to adjust, but it would be a whole lot cheaper.

I have to agree. It may help with saving shoulders possibly but I cannot see how it would replicate the placement and feel of a quality SSB.

What I was thinking. They should rename this the shoulder saver. I think there's probably a larger market for people that want to back squat longer and have shoulder pain than someone that may be considering a SSB

Add a moderately heavy dumbbell to his hands and you get close to a SSB weight distribution. But I suspect you'd be taking a lot of the "safety" out of SSB by making things that complicated.

So I decided to get this a few months ago. While it certainly doesn't turn a straight bar into a SSB, it does provide a useful option for those with shoulder/mobility issues to perform a back squat movement.

The strap is heavy duty and adjustments are surprisingly easy to make.

A very cool and pleasant surprise.

    I like the idea.

I know using this would make the bar very secure in place, but I don't like that it would cover the center knurl.
How does it feel on the back?

I might try making my own with some ratchet or lashing straps

The strap doesn't cover any part of the barbell that makes contact with your back.

As someone who has only been doing squats with a SSB (shoulder injury), it took me awhile to get used to that old feeling of having a barbell on the back. Especially being on the skinny-side and seeing these red barbell marks on my upper back.

Awesome that it doesn't take away from the center knurl, thank you.

I tried using the arm slings that are for leg raises today to replicate the spud SSB strap. it worked pretty well but I found it difficult to get the groove in my back for low bar squats. Did you notice that with the Spud SSB strap.

I haven't had any issues finding the right groove on my back, granted my bar position is somewhere in between a high and low bar squat.

With arm slings you're probably missing the ability to adjust the length of the straps which can help with finding that ideal bar position.

I have one. It absolutely covers the bar where it contacts the back. I am unable to low bar and I tried this spud strap (among other things) and while,it was ok for warm ups, once I got to my work, sets, it was not stable.

Figured it was worth a shot. Definitely not a ssb movement.

I just ordered the Spud Safety Squat Bar Strap at Black Friday pricing. I have been using an EliteFTS SSB because my shoulders won't let me do straight bar squats. I am looking forward to seeing how the strap compares.

been using elite fts ssb for so long I recently tried a regular bar to get a better glute workout and my shoulders were really tight. Reminded me why I went to the ssb. Might check these out.
