Why do so many people think money buys happiness?

There are so many miserable rich people it would blow your mind. They may appear "happy" on social media but they are not.

I know a guy here who lives in a $4 million house, lots of money, wears a $50k watch, great family and he's on anti-depressants.

Money may buy you material things but it doesn't buy happiness. It's weird how the human brain works....we want what we can't have. People that aren't rich automatically think money is the key to happiness. But once you have money, it doesn't mean anything. The expensive stuff you buy loses its luster once you have it. We all dream thinking having a lambo will bring us eternal bliss. Or living in a giant, nice house. But that's just our brain tricking us to lust after things we don't have. Once you have those things, if you have that state of mind, you'll just keep wanting more.

I'm not saying that money isn't nice to have, but happiness is more so related to love, state of mind, and outlook.

Those people had issues before money got involved.

Money would make me happy, it would pull me out of debt, make sure my family is taken care of, and let me actually enjoy myself instead of working till I have a heart attack and die.

I rather be rich and depressed than broke and depressed. At least when you are rich you can take care of yourself, when you are broke... Good luck.

Let me tell you something. There is no nobility in poverty. I’ve been a rich man, and I’ve been poor man. And I choose rich every ****ing time. Cause, At least as a rich man, when I have to face my problems, I show up in the back of a limo wearing a $2000 suit …and $40,000 gold ****in’ watch!

Yes, initially it would pull you out of debt and make you happy at first but that feeling would fade.

Money buys freedom. But it also creates other problems and worries. You'll fear protecting your money or losing it. When you have more, there's more to lose and more at stake.

I don't know the definition of rich is but I've been very well off (freedom to buy almost anything other than crazy stuff like mansions and yachts and stuff). I've also been poor.

I can say that when I had the most, I was not happy.

That's why I say happiness is a state of mind and not related to how much money you have.

No. I never said being broke brings happiness.

You guys are thinking in such a simple frame of mind.

I'm saying a guy living comfortable making $95,000/year can be happier than someone with millions of dollars in their bank account.

Obviously if anyone had a choice between rich and poor they would pick rich.

I'm not saying being poor is better. I'm just saying happiness is much deeper than buying chit.

Money doesn't necessarily make you happy, but being poor can easily make you unhappy. So if you have money, at least you'll avoid unhappiness due to being poor.

Money would make me happy, it would pull me out of debt, make sure my family is taken care of, and let me actually enjoy myself instead of working till I have a heart attack and die.
    this

just the whole everything being taken cared of problem is a HUGE weight off the average person's mental health.

Just spent 6k on a 10 day trip to Hawaii and that's happiness to me.

Money doesnt necessarily buy happiness but it makes life easier and also makes happiness more achievable if everything else in your life is in order.

At first, yes, because your brain would be lighting up with dopamine. Once the fact that you had a good career set in, you'll start eventually wanting more.

That's why I made this thread because I see so many people (including everyone who replied) saying that being rich would automatically bring them eternal happiness. You MAY think that, but its not the case.

Exactly. That's the point I'm trying to make. I never said money isn't great to have. It buys freedom and security. My point is that the luster of buying chit wears off once you have it. If you use your money in the right way then it can be a great tool.

Most people seem to use their money to show off or chase material **** for short-term excitement and its a never-ending cycle trying to find "happiness"

you don't be rich for the sake of money, you be rich so you can DO things. people without money cannot do things. with money you can do whatever you want. you can find happiness. poor people do not have that luxury of enjoying life.

rich people can do whatever the **** they want. eat good everyday, travel best hotels best tours, everything. buy whatever clothes they want. take whatever courses or experiences they want. acupuncture, massages, try out different classes. have a family. live comfortably. buy the best ****in bed, buy the best toliet, i don't even have a bed, i would love to have a bed, i've been sleeping on a couch for years.

Yes, having money will take away the worry of having to make money or pay off debt. No doubt about that.

It also brings new problems for people: You worry that "friends" or lovers are with you just for your money, you worry about losing the money, you worry about making more or maintaining your lifestyle. Hence where "more money, more problems" come from.

Look how many people win the lottery and say they were happier before they won.

Also, I have met some poor people that were extremely happy. They just didn't desire much and took joy from simple pleasures in life.

You mention that rich people can eat whatever they want each day, travel wherever, etc. That sounds AWESOME when you don't have it, but once you get used to that lifestyle the excitement of it will wear off. That's just how our brains work. I know people will read that and think that's dumb and unfathomable but it's true.

People need something to give their life meaning/purpose to cope with the sheer futility of it in the grand scheme of things

For a lot of people that's striving to become wealthy because they believe that's what will finally make them happy

The concept of "once I achieve this then I'll be happy"

Once I make this amount per year
Once I have this amount saved up
Once I buy this type of house
Once I get this type of car
Once I get this type of gf
    ...on and on

If you're not inherently a happy person then the next "achievement" on the list won't make or sustain happiness

They see lots of rich/successful people who aren't happy but they choose to ignore it because everyone believes as a coping mechanism that "it will be different for me"

Exactly man you said it PERFECTLY, repped

It seems most people here are chasing that one achievement which is "being rich" but with that state of mind its going to become never-ending. They'll keep wanting more and more.
