    Big doubts, bodybuilding vs calisthenics.

    Hi people,

I'm doubting what to choose. I'm 43 and at the moment losing weight, I'm about 4 kgs from my goal.

What I want is to build muscle and get stronger, but not look like Mr. Universe

I don't necesarrily want to do the "tricks"

    Anyone who did both?

Relax Mike - you won't wake up one morning suddenly looking like Arnold... it takes years of work and eating right to get big.
Both weight training and calisthenics will help you with your goal to build muscle and get stronger, it really just comes down to your preference for how you want to go about it. The main thing is to get started - don't wait for the last 4kg to go, start as soon as you can with whatever you choose. Weights and calisthenics are not mutually exclusive and most people combine them in their workouts, for example including push-ups, dip variations and pull-up variations.

If that's your goal, body weight exercises are only going to take you so far before you'll need more resistance (weight).

Go read the stickies in the Workout Programs forums and pick one of the beginner strength programs to get started with.
If you see me running...you better catch up.

Respect!! I thought you were going to start Cross Fit kipping when you did that Muscle Up.

    Great agility and strength.

I agree integrating both would be the way to go.
Usually bodybuilding is more isolated for specific muscle groups and bodyweight uses many muscle groups together.
And using iron as resistance and your body as resistance have a different feeling all together.

Lots of classic and golden era bodybuilders included various sorts of gymnastic moves in their routines. Whatever you do, just remember that you have to have progression, whether it's weight, reps, time, etc.

Just be careful. A few too many sets of curls....and BOOM! All that disgusting muscle appears and then you have to live with that affliction.

Sadly I tried to learn that method and could never figure it out. The momentary seizure method is sadly all I can do lol.
