    Simone Biles

Just for a change of pace from our usual grumpiness and conspiricizing...

From 1988 to 1991, my daughter achieved some success in competitive gymnastics, before injuries ended her dreams of Olympic glory at the age of 12. Back then, and mostly still today, "women's" gymnastics was a sport for girls and teens, the idea that anyone would be not only still active, but at a championship level, at the age of 22 was simply unthinkable.

I mostly stopped following the sport after the 1994 Olympics, disgusted by the cynical and exploitative attitude that the sports media at the time was displaying towards these girls. It took the recent Larry Nassar case to kick me out of my self-imposed embargo and take a look at what's going on in gymnastics.

I saw the video of Simone Biles competing last week at the 2019 U.S. National Championships, and I really was blown away. This girl is a freak of nature, but great genetics alone cannot explain that kind of skill level. I didn't think moves like that were humanly possible.

Had the top gymnasts been doing that kind of stuff when my daughter was competing, I'm not sure I would have even let her go through with it.

I'm out, standing in my field.

I don't consider that a pejorative. Working hard is not enough to get where she is. Lots of gymnasts are out there busting their butts to get to be the best they can be, and Simone Biles leaves them all in the dust. Her genetics are one-in-a-million, and IN ADDITION to that she has a killer work ethic. My post comes from nothing but admiration, there's no put-down intended.

She was a teen during her first championship, and second, and third. She was sexually assaulted by Larry Nassar as a teen. She's paid a big price for her accomplishments.

But she's no longer a teen, she's a fully adult woman in an adult relationship. And that makes her even more remarkable, as I said in the OP, because nearly all other gymnasts would be retired by her age.

And no, 401Delta would not "tap" that. If he tried, he'd get his ass kicked and then go to jail. And it would be good riddance.

She's probably the greatest gymnast of all time. That triple somersault in the air or whatever it's called was beyond impressive. I don't think anyone has ever come close to her in the sport.

This is true of any sport. Great genetics give you the raw materials you need to succeed, but it is all for naught if you don't put in the work. The very best athletes invariably have an insane work ethic, despite having great genetics. I didn't interpret your comment as a put-down at all.

    Elrond,

The video won't play in my neck of the woods. I'll check YouTube for it. I did gymnastics as a teenager and always watch the events whenever I can. Have you seen Katelyn Ohashi?

    P.S. Found the video.

In the case of Simone Biles, it’s more than just the skill level that amazes me, but the longevity as well. I know how punishing the training and the meets can be. My daughter trained 10-12 hours a week, and she still feels pain from it to this day. Biles, I read, trains 30 hours a week. That’s just about superhuman in my book.

She's either trained really, really smartly (which includes proper recovery) with an eye to longevity, or as you say in clear praise; she's a genetic freak (AKA 'superhuman' ). It's unfortunate about your daughters' lingering pain.
It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.

It's easy to not be afraid of tigers when you're sitting in your living room watching a television program about tigers. When you're in the jungle where the tigers are, it's quite a different story.

Pretty sure the guys can do that skill, so it's all a matter of developing the required strength. I remember growing up female gymnasts looked like ballerinas, they were skin and bones. Now especially the americans are built like tanks. Well guess what, the more muscle you build the harder skills you can perform.

By the way, the same is happening in ice skating for example, women used to do only single jumps, then only doubles, a triple was considered superhuman for a woman. Now they do them regularly and now more are attempting (and landing) quadruple jumps.

The same is true of many other sports. Like when it was considered impossible to run the 100m dash in under 10 secs.

The secret is not to tell athletes what's achievable and what's superhuman. But that's true of most things in life really.

It's a good point, and also makes it worth mentioning that the average elite male gymnast is a bit older than the average female gymnast, and their sports careers are usually a bit longer. That gives them time to develop further, to mature, and hone skills that simply take lots of time.

That may be part of Simone Biles' incredible achievement, her exceptional longevity in the sport. She has had more time than most other gymnasts to train, to develop and practice new routines, and to get stronger. As long as she can stay free of injury, I would bet she has a few good years still to go.
I'm out, standing in my field.

Laughing at the "super-human" comment, folks this is what training with weights does.

......decades ago weight training in American sports and many other sports was frowned upon, now it's the norm. When it comes to using weights one can doing everything wrong and become "super-human", but only smart programs provide longevity.

...but I'd still caution against forcing young athletes to perform powercleans, unlike that big fat strongman fella says, the dead lift is the EASIEST lift to train in a "cookie cutter" fashion. Some people can learn and master powerclean, having an expensive bar and shoes helps too.

Yes, remember when female gymnasts were basically children? Seeing a 20 year old female gymnast was like seeing a unicorn. In fact weren't there rumors of places like the Soviet Union and China delaying their puberty to keep them "childlike" longer? But estrogen is key in building muscles in women, so it would make sense that they should hit puberty to really put that to good use, and then you need to give them a few years to build the muscle.

I think the logic was that a gymnast who's short and light does better, but that's only part of the equation. If the goal is to beat gravity you can do it by being light OR by applying force against gravity.
