Friday - Light 2 mile ruck and some foam rolling/recovery work.

Saturday - 10 mile ruck carrying odd stuff with some friends. 40# ruck and carried items from 80# to 40# over the 10 miles. Felt great this whole session, the 80 felt comfortable.

Sunday - Light 2 mile recovery ruck.

Monday - 75 ruck hang cleans, 65 ruck presses, 65 ruck front squats, 2 mile ruck before work. Then hit a few sets of dumbbell bench presses and lat pulldowns at work.

    Tuesday - Off day.

Wednesday - Ruck + sandbag bear crawl drags and ruck + sandbag carries. Did 300ft of sandbag drags while bear crawling (60# sandbag, 30# ruck) and just over a mile of rucking with the 60# sandbag (90# total) in about 40 minutes. This one sucked a bit. Walked the dog later on that night with the ruck on for another mile.

    Hi Grouchy

Nice to see you still working hard!

I thought of your journal the other day; my son is trying to talk me into doing the Tour Mont Blanc, its 103 mile trek through the French Italian, and Swiss Alps..30000ft elevation gain. To make it affordable we would have to camp most days and cook our own meals. I would assume light we would be yomping 40lbs worth of kit each. May have to pay more attention to your journal if we actually get past the covid crap and get to it. Might do some overnighters later on this year just to see how we feel about it.

In your opinion how many kms would you say a fit person packing 40lbs over the hill and dale could do in a day without destroying themselves?

    Keep up the good work!
Please record my time/reps if I pass out

    Hi CPW,

I'd say assuming 8 hours of casual walking per day to allow plenty of time to rest and recuperate, and allowing for the elevation, an average of 12-15 miles per day (20-25km) would not be unrealistic. If you have a week of good weather and are prepared for it, I can see a week being very doable. There is ultra light hiking gear and lists that allow you to carry much less weight too which would be useful.

The usual great work continues in here. Nice job Grouchy! I like the dog walk with ruck. I've been doing the same thing with skateboarding when I get home from work. The kids think I'm just cruising around with them in the street for an hour. I'm really burning another 200 calories. You guys let me know how that 103 mile hike goes.

    Thanks Marius!

    Playing catch up once again.

Fri 04/16 - Knee acting up a bit, just some yoga.

Sat 04/17 - Knee better but still iffy so I did an easy workout at home. 140 push-ups, 140 side shuffles over sandbag, 140 sandbag shrugs with 60#.

Sun 04/18 - Knee felt better so I did a circuit of farmer's walks, sandbag squats, burpees, and rucking all while wearing a 30# ruck for 15 minutes. Ran a comfortable 1.5 miles before my son's baseball practice at the track pushing my daughter.

Mon 04/19 - 1.5 mile run in 15:47, then 1.25 mile run in 9:58. 10 minute rest. Then a 1 mile run at 9:31, 1 mile ruck with 30# at 12:31, then 1 mile ruck with 100# sandbag in 18:40. Total of 5.75 miles and 40:12. Pull ups and stretching before work.

Tue 04/20 - Just a short recovery ruck.

Wed 04/21 - Had to take off to take care of a sick wife and kid, so nothing today aside from pull-ups.

Fri 04/23 - Just recovery work and yoga.

Sat 04/24 - Group workout session with the club. Aptly called "The Reaper", we had to cut it a bit short due to time constraints. Total work - 98 ruck burpees, 98 ruck lunges, 98 ruck push ups, 98 ruck double pump squats, 84 ruck presses, 81 ruck swings, 81 ruck pullovers, 81 ruck get ups, 81 yards ruck bear crawls, 81 yards sandbag clean and toss, 81 yards low crawling, 81 yards crab walking, then 81 yards of low crawling with sandbag drags. 30# ruck, 80# sandbag. We also did over 8 miles of rucking in between sets - I carried an 80# sandbag plus the ruck for over two miles straight so I'm happy with that.

Sun 04/25 - Rest and recovery.

Mon 04/26 - 30 minute yoga session and 2 mile speed march on hills, 48# ruck, 28:31.

At age 64, I've exceeded all my prior PRs. Not “over the hill” yet. :)

I actually checked my previous time and shaved off over 11 minutes. Partly because I was better prepared this time, but also because the runs and burpees were much easier this time around. Whatever I'm doing is working.

You're on spread but I will rep you soon.

Sat 05/08 - 12 mile timed ruck with 20kg, 2:58:40. 30 minute rest. Then a 10K timed ruck with 20kg, 1:46:03. Foot issues slowed me down some, tried my old military boots and paid for it.

Thu 05/13 - Cut this one a bit short due to a strange feeling in my left biceps. Stopped immediately as I didn't want to push it any further. 1-10 pyramid of navy seal burpees and chin-ups (55 reps of each, including 165 push ups and 110 mountain climbers), then it was supposed to be 9-1 of weighted push-ups and TRX rows for double reps but I only got the first set in of those before I called it quits. I also ran a hilly half mile twice during this session (~200' elevation total for the mile).

84 lbs?!?! That is certainly a heavy one.

Is the weight distributed with some of the load in front or is it all on your back?

All in the ruck but there is a hip and chest strap to spread it around a bit. 45# plate, a 30# sandbag, and some water and gear.
