when you resist arrest and throw bricks and firebombs at cops, you think they're just gonna shrug their shoulders and go home? in fact, a lot of the time, that's what they're instructed to do. what planet are you guys on? i've seen videos all over youtube and i honestly have no idea what the snowflake protesters are on about.

Obviously the police have a job to do but the response has to be proportionate. I mean a bunch of police with batons beating a school child unconscious is a little extreme isn't it? What about the guy in hospital who was punched in the groin, had his guys gouged, had is wrist broken, and generally beaten while tied down to a hospital bed, how was he resisting arrest. What about the girl who lost and eye, is being shot in the face a proportionate response?

Also how about the press, are they resisting arrest when they are being attacked and beaten, having tear gas grenades thrown at them, being shot at? They are not even protesting just documenting what's happening.

What about those guys who were attacked on a train, how were they resisting arrest, they were followed onto the train, beaten, then the police didn't even arrest them, just walked off after they had beaten them. That's not about arresting people, it's about violent intimidation. And the Hong Kong police's response when asked why they beat them? Because they changed their clothes and tried to hide.

Then of course you have under cover police dressed as protestors throwing molotov cocktails and starting the violence. How is that upholding the law?

Mainland Chinese in Australia - "Of course we can say anything (in China), as long as it's not against the government". She said it so casually like it's common sense. - 5:17

This is the mindset after being brainwashed by communist propaganda for years.

never heard of this. how old? link?
What about the guy in hospital who was punched in the groin, had his guys gouged, had is wrist broken, and generally beaten while tied down to a hospital bed, how was he resisting arrest.
i believe the cops were arrested, as they should be
What about the girl who lost and eye, is being shot in the face a proportionate response?
i just saw a news post saying she's now hired a lawyer to block the cops from obtaining her medical records so they can see if she actually lost the eye and how she lost it. this one is still a work in progress, but if you play stupid games, expect to win stupid prizes

Also how about the press, are they resisting arrest when they are being attacked and beaten, having tear gas grenades thrown at them, being shot at? They are not even protesting just documenting what's happening.

this comment i strongly disagree with. some are not press, at least not in a professional sense. they swarm on cops, they interfere with arrests, they generally get in everyone's way. i'm actually shocked how much freedom they have. you will not see this type of chit allowed in the US. i see lots of them recording with only an iphone. lmao. i have no idea what the standards of being "press" is down there, but it's hilariously lax

Then of course you have under cover police dressed as protestors throwing molotov cocktails and starting the violence. How is that upholding the law?
where the proof the undercover cops are throwing the molotovs? i see this said so much on other forums but there is zero evidence.

Police beating up a person who was walked around there. Video has shown that he was just walking there and wore a black mask. Being young looking is already a crime in a time like these. He didn't destroy any property there at all.

Also, they already caught him, why beat him up so violently with 5+ police surrounding him.

It has confirmed that he's just a high school student from one of the best schools in Hong Kong.

Clips also show that people are not RESISTING and the police still beat them.

Taiwanese man missing after visiting Hong Kong ‘being investigated by mainland’
    • Chinese authorities say they are investigating Lee Meng-chu for ‘activities that endanger state security’
    • Lee is believed to have distributed images of mainland troops massing equipment near Hong Kong

Mainland Chinese authorities have said they are investigating a Taiwanese man who went missing after entering Hong Kong and reportedly crossing the border into Shenzhen last month.

Ma Xiaoguang, a spokesman for the mainland Taiwan Affairs Office, confirmed at a press conference in Beijing on Wednesday that Lee Meng-chu was being investigated for “activities that endanger state security”, without disclosing further details.

In Taipei, the government of President Tsai Ing-wen expressed grave concern over the detention of Lee and called on the mainland authorities to provide a full account in addition to allowing Lee’s family to visit him on the mainland.

“We are deeply concerned about the detention of our national Lee Meng-chu in China and have asked the Mainland Affairs Council and relevant agencies to negotiate in full force with the Chinese side about the issue,” the Presidential Office said in a statement on Wednesday.

The Mainland Affairs Council, the island’s top cross-strait policy planner, said the mainland authorities must “provide detailed information about where he was detained and why he was restricted of his personal freedom in line with the agreement on cross-strait joint efforts to fight crimes”.

“It must also officially inform the relatives of [Lee] and swiftly make arrangements for his relatives to visit him on the mainland in the presence of lawyers to uphold his judicial rights,” said Chiu Chui-cheng, the vice-chairman of the council.

Another huge protest in Hong Kong at September 15. The protesters don't care about police's refusal of permission of protest this time, no one listen to the corrupted/violence police anymore. People of Hong Kong are really waking up.

Protesters don't need your pathetic Chinazi permission to speak out for freedom and their mind.

    5 Demands, not 1 less.

Also there's a group of white shirt attacking protesters, and the police are working with the white shirt group to attack protesters TOGETHER.

Once this bill passed, all these so-call China "patriots" officials will get their western assets frozen in the USA. Will be real funny to watch their reactions.

I'm hoping the protests will expand to greater China to overthrow the communist evil, but the communists' forceful stranglehold on the country* is probably too great now thanks to us all sending them massive amounts of money for the past several decades, yeah myself included.

*Enacting a total trade embargo could change that equation for the good very quickly though.

Just wait for the 70th Anniversary Military Parade next month - they're planning to reveal a number of new "weapons" and aircraft as a statement to the world. Just like the blind, proud, and loud crowd that follow Trump or Biden or Bernie, there is also an ignorant mass that supports the CCP. This is supposed to be a very proud moment in Chinese history and I can only assume Xi will capitalize on the moment to make a very assertive speech. A.k.a the voice of dissent will be drowned out by a wave of Chinese nationalism.

Hong Kong police confirmed that the police was kicking something. They claimed it was just a yellow object but it is VERY obvious to anyone that the yellow "object" was a human.

Police brutality corruption in its finest at Hong Kong. There is a need and must have an independent commission investigation into these evil monsters.

    5 demands, not 1 less.

    1. Complete withdrawal of the extradition bill from the legislative process
    2. Retraction of the "riot" characterisation
    3. Release and exoneration of arrested protesters
    4. Establishment of an independent commission of inquiry into police conduct and use of force during the protests
    5. Resignation of Carrie Lam and the implementation of universal suffrage for Legislative Council and Chief Executive elections

The situation is getting uglier. China's national day on Oct 1 should be a real firecracker.

Hong Kong protester shot as violent clashes escalate

Hong Kong police shot a protester as violent clashes erupted across the Asian financial hub on Tuesday, sullying China’s attempts to project a strong and unified image to the world on the 70th anniversary of Communist party rule.

Video footage showed a police officer shooting the 18-year-old in the chest with a pistol at point blank range — the first time anyone has been shot in four months of often violent demonstrations in the city — during a running battle between police and protesters. The man, who was identified as a high school student, was taken to hospital, where staff said his condition was critical.

The shooting came on one of the most violent days yet in the wave of protests that have hit the territory, which returned to Beijing’s rule in 1997, with clashes still under way late on Tuesday evening. Financial Times journalists witnessed another protester being beaten unconscious by police in a separate clash. The city’s Hospital Authority said it had treated 66 people aged 11 to 75 years old, including two who were in critical condition.

Authorities also released photographs of a police officer who had been attacked with a corrosive liquid, the skin on his chest and arms covered in welts.

“I’m ready to die for the movement, I’m not afraid,” said a 15-year-old student who gave his name as Xiu. “If my death would mean Hong Kong got freedom and genuine democracy, then it would be worth it.”

Hong Kong began the day in lockdown, with almost 30 shopping malls and a number of metro stations closed on what is normally a busy public holiday. The measures highlight the significant economic cost the protests have caused the city since they began four months ago.

“The so-called National Day is a day for mourning. We are mourning those who sacrificed for democracy in China . . . it’s 70 years of suppression,” said Lee Cheuk-yan, a former legislator and democracy activist, marching in one of the city’s biggest shopping districts that is usually flooded with mainland Chinese tourists.

But as crowds of demonstrators fought police, threw petrol bombs and smashed public property in Hong Kong, Beijing staged its biggest ever military parade in a move intended to project an aura of confidence and power to its people and to the wider world.

“Unity is iron, unity is steel, unity is strength,” said Xi Jinping, China’s president, in a speech delivered to a huge banquet on the eve of the national day celebrations in Beijing that was attended by Carrie Lam, Hong Kong’s beleaguered chief executive.

The parade unveiled startling advances in China’s weapons arsenal, including the Dongfeng 41 missile, which analysts said was capable of hitting any target in the US, carrying up to 10 nuclear warheads and travelling at 25 times the speed of sound. An estimated 15,000 troops, 160 warplanes and 580 tanks also took part in the parade.

“There is no force that can obstruct the advance of the People’s Republic of China,” Mr Xi said in a speech as he stood on Tiananmen gate in central Beijing — the same hallowed spot from which Chairman Mao Zedong proclaimed the birth of the People’s Republic in 1949.

Donald Trump, US president, applauded Mr Xi on the parade, writing on Twitter: “Congratulations to President Xi and the Chinese people on the 70th Anniversary of the People’s Republic of China!”

But China’s display belied the problems the country faces. Its economy is growing at the slowest pace in almost 30 years, a swine fever epidemic has sent pork prices soaring, fallout from the trade war with the US is starting to bite and the island of Taiwan, which Beijing regards as its sovereign territory, appears likely to vote for a pro-independence candidate at presidential elections next year.

But Hong Kong remains Beijing’s most pressing concern. As Mr Xi exhorted China to unity and Ms Lam sat grinning on the official review stand as she watched Beijing’s parade rumble past, the former British colony exploded in open rebellion.

“The Hong Kong government has lost its legitimacy in the eyes of a broad spectrum of the population,” said Joseph Cheng, a Hong Kong political commentator. “Unfortunately, it has no way to recover it. It is seen to be too eager to toe the Beijing line and not ready to stand up for the rights of the Hong Kong people.”

The demonstrators, who numbered in the hundreds of thousands on Tuesday, have five main demands, including genuine direct elections for the post of chief executive and for Hong Kong’s de facto parliament, the Legislative Council. Ms Lam has already acceded to another of the protesters’ demands, pledging to withdraw a controversial extradition bill.

But for many Hong Kong people, simple anger is the animating energy behind the protests, analysts say. The clashes that erupted on Tuesday in multiple locations displayed a new level of violence in a movement that represents the biggest rebellion on Chinese soil since the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre in Beijing.

The run-up to the shooting of the 18-year-old student followed a typical sequence of events. About 20 protesters, mostly wearing their signature black clothes and face masks, chased a handful of police officers to a stretch of pavement in front of the Cheung Hing Kee Shanghai Pan-fried Bun shop in Tsuen Wan district, video footage showed.

The protesters set upon the police, beating them with metal poles, umbrellas and fists. Then a police officer shot his pistol directly at the student, who collapsed to the ground instantly. As one of his comrades tried to tend to him, another officer attacked him, pulling him off and pinning him to the ground.

i think it's in china's best interest to wait it out and let HK residents turn on the rioters. i'd suggest at least 60% of the rioters still live with their parents. and when the parents start losing their jobs, you best believe asses are gonna be kicked at home.

the only way china goes in with force this quickly is if corrupt ccp officials are losing their shirts on investments in HK due to economic downturn from the riots.

Hong Kong government faces calls to enact emergency law
The Hong Kong government is facing growing calls from pro-Beijing politicians and police to invoke emergency laws to contain violent protests a day after the first shooting in the city’s four-month pro-democracy movement.

While protesters held peaceful rallies on Wednesday against the shooting of a teenage demonstrator, the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong, a pro-Chinese government political party, called on the government to enact a colonial-era law that would give it greater powers to arrest suspects and tighten press controls.

The law was necessary to “safeguard residents and their property [and] to allow society to return to order”, DAB said in a statement. “This unfortunate situation stems from radical violent protesters’ . . . intent to create bloodshed to achieve their political goals.”

Protesters and police clashed across the Asian financial hub on Tuesday in demonstrations designed to coincide with national day celebrations in Beijing to commemorate 70 years of communist rule.

President Xi Jinping held the country’s biggest military parade to show off China’s military and international clout. But the festivities were overshadowed in international media reports by images of the shooting, in which a policeman fired his revolver at a teenage protester who was among a group attacking officers.

The incident drew condemnation from US senator Marco Rubio, who is pushing the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, a proposed law that would place sanctions on Chinese officials who suppressed “basic freedoms” in the territory.

“As Hong Kong continues to violate the basic rights of its citizens the US [and] the world are watching,” he tweeted.

Mitch McConnell, the Republican senate majority leader, also took a swipe at China in contrast to President Donald Trump, who congratulated Mr Xi over the 70th anniversary on Tuesday.

“It is darkly fitting that on the 70th anniversary of the PRC [People’s Republic of China], its agents would be reduced to using force against protesters in Hong Kong who seek to preserve basic personal freedoms,” Mr McConnell said in a statement.

China accused the US and UK, which has criticised the use of live ammunition, of “double standards”. The Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong added that it strongly opposes such “gross interference”.

But Stephen Lo, Hong Kong’s police commissioner, said the officer who shot the protester acted in self-defence. The 18-year-old, who is in stable condition, was among more than 200 people arrested on Tuesday for offences including rioting and unlawful assembly.

The city’s Junior Police Officers’ Association backed the calls from the pro-Beijing politicians for tougher powers, saying the force was fighting alone and needed the emergency law to help it end the violence.

But any attempt to enact Hong Kong’s Emergency Regulations Ordinance, which was introduced by the British colonial government in 1922, would probably provoke further outrage from the pro-democracy movement.

“He is only a kid [the teenager who was shot] . . . The shot has of course fuelled my anger,” a banker identifying himself only as Brian said on Wednesday. He was among several hundred office workers wearing suits who staged a peaceful demonstration during their lunch break in Hong Kong’s central business district.

Separately on Wednesday, 96 people, aged from 14 to 41, appeared in court charged with rioting following a protest on Sunday.

Hundreds of supporters crowded outside the court, chanting: “Regain Hong Kong, revolution of our times.”

The demonstrations have had a significant impact on retailers. In August, they suffered their worst month since records began, with sales falling 23 per cent year-on-year as protests deterred tourists and caused shops to close on weekends.

At several locations in Hong Kong on Wednesday night, protesters staged mostly peaceful demonstrations to express their anger at the shooting.

In Tsuen Wan, an outlying neighbourhood where the teenager was shot by police, thousands of protesters gathered holding signs that read, “don’t shoot our kids”.

As the night went on, large angry crowds spilled on to major roads, erected barricades to block traffic and lit fires in some locations. Other groups vandalised subway stations and ATM machines belonging to Bank of China.

Journalist shot in face with Hong Kong police projectile will lose sight permanently in right eye, lawyer says

Veby Mega Indah, an Indonesian journalist who was shot in the face with a police projectile on Sunday, will end up permanently blind in one eye, according to her lawyer.

“Doctors treating Ms Indah have today informed her that regrettably the injury she received as a result of being shot by police, will result in permanent blindness in her right eye,” said Michael Vidler. “She was informed that the pupil of her eye was ruptured by the force of the impact. The exact percentage of permanent impairment can only be assessed after surgery.”

Footage showed that Veby – associate editor of the Suara Hong Kong News – was wearing a high visibility jacket, a helmet with “press” markings, an eye shield, and was standing alongside other media staff when she was conducting a ******** live stream. She fell to the ground after being struck with a projectile fired by police on a bridge near Wan Chai MTR station.

She remained conscious and was treated by first-aiders on the scene. She was then sent to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital.

Vidler said that her family remain by her side: “We can also confirm that we have received evidence from a third party, which indicates that the projectile that blinded Ms Veby was a rubber bullet and not a beanbag round as originally thought.”

Thousands marched in a “global anti-totalitarianism” protest on Sunday, as protests entered their 17th week. Originally in opposition to an extradition law, the demonstrations have evolved into calls for democracy, and for an investigation into alleged police misconduct.

On Monday, the Hong Kong Journalists Association (HKJA) said it was gravely concerned about the incident: “We are particularly concerned by reports that the injury was caused by a rubber bullet or bean bag round and that the journalist was not in the immediate vicinity of protestors at the time of the incident, she was clearly identifiable as being a member of the press and was with a number of other journalists at the time also wearing high visibility press markings,” it said in a statement.

“Police have a duty to assist the press and facilitate reporting by members of the press. It is self-evident that this means that police should not cause injury to members of the press.”

The HKJA said will be investigating.

Hong Kong government to announce new law banning masks during public assemblies in bid to end months of protest violence
Hong Kong’s embattled government is set to announce plans on Friday to ban people from wearing masks at public assemblies, as it struggles to get a grip on protest violence spiralling out of control, sources have told the Post.

Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor’s administration, under mounting pressure from its political allies to put a stop to nearly four months of anti-government protest violence, is expected to impose the ban through legislation by invoking a tough, colonial-era emergency law that has not been used in more than half a century.

Lam would hold a special meeting of her de facto cabinet, the Executive Council, on Friday morning before announcing the ban, according to sources on Thursday.

Prior approval by city’s legislature is not required, and it will only be able to amend or strike down the law after implementation.
