Hong Kong government to announce new law banning masks during public assemblies in bid to end months of protest violence
Hong Kong’s embattled government is set to announce plans on Friday to ban people from wearing masks at public assemblies, as it struggles to get a grip on protest violence spiralling out of control, sources have told the Post.

Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor’s administration, under mounting pressure from its political allies to put a stop to nearly four months of anti-government protest violence, is expected to impose the ban through legislation by invoking a tough, colonial-era emergency law that has not been used in more than half a century.

Lam would hold a special meeting of her de facto cabinet, the Executive Council, on Friday morning before announcing the ban, according to sources on Thursday.

Prior approval by city’s legislature is not required, and it will only be able to amend or strike down the law after implementation.

Sen. Rick Scott: Inaction by Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Carrie Lam Harming the Fight for Freedom

    Thursday, October 3, 2019
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Senator Rick Scott released the following statement after receiving a letter from Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam. The letter follows Senator Scott’s trip to Hong Kong, where he met with business leaders, pro-democracy figures, and government leaders, including Chief Executive Carrie Lam, to discuss the path forward for Hong Kong amid China’s growing threat.

Senator Rick Scott said, “On my trip to Hong Kong, I met with Chief Executive Carrie Lam and establishment leaders, who are nothing more than puppets for Beijing and President Xi. Chief Executive Lam wouldn’t even answer basic questions about the rights of her people. I received a follow-up letter today from Chief Executive Lam filled with more empty words. She claims to value freedom, democracy, and Hong Kong’s partnership with the United States, but her inaction demonstrates how little she values the rights of the people of Hong Kong – even denying her citizens the right to protest peacefully. As Chief Executive Lam wrote this letter to me, a Hong Kong teenager was shot in the chest while protesting for freedom. Now, her government is considering banning people from wearing masks that are used to protect themselves from tear gas or hide their identities. Chief Executive Lam is just another pawn in Communist dictator Xi’s game of global domination. It is disappointing that Hong Kong does not have a strong leader standing for them, but the United States is committed to this fight and won’t back down.”

    The letter - https://www.rickscott.senate.gov/sit...or%20Scott.pdf

    Right on, Senator Rick Scott.

But police will be allowed to wear anything to hide their identity and no badge number when attacking protesters.

Also another thing is that the police has no badge number now while on duty. HK used to require police to wear badge number ALL the time while on duty. So even if you want to complain about one police abusing a protester, you can't do it because there's no badge number.

What we have here is that the police can do anything to the protesters without repercussion

Extremely clear signs that the government is still corrupted, until more demands of democracy protesters are met - Hong Kong people will not knee to CCP.

If it wasn't the police brutality, none of these will happen. Police brutality first then the protesters are now standing their ground against THUGS+POLICE BRUTALITY

Also 5 demands, not 1 less

    1. Complete withdrawal of the extradition bill from the legislative process
    2. Retraction of the "riot" characterisation
    3. Release and exoneration of arrested protesters
    4. Establishment of an independent commission of inquiry into police conduct and use of force during the protests
    5. Resignation of Carrie Lam and the implementation of universal suffrage for Legislative Council and Chief Executive elections

Proof of corrupted police and CCP treating protesters as object -

WHO will hold these cops accountable? They can wear mask and no badge number when protesters can't wear mask at all?

Before all these chit happens - he was taking pictures of protesters. During other protests, quite A few of people got caught taking pictures of protesters and was found Chinese mainland police ID on them. Extremely unsafe now day to get pictures taken when on protest now and then get reported to the police. Since police can do anything to abuse protesters and arrest people for any reason now days with police brutality.

Great Great job to stand your ground against this kind of chit.

this dude was getting his lunch and got his face punched in because he's the wrong type of chinese. stop with your protest propaganda. nothing he did deserved to mocked by a reporter, then another reporter stopped him from going inside, and then a riot thug did his thing. it's honestly so pathetic man...

You have no idea what's going on with this protest at all and clearly doesn't understand the levity of the situation in Hong Kong.

You do realise that the army and air force is composed of dudes like you and I with families etc back home?

You seem to think, in the unlikely event a future US Government turns on the American people, that they would blindly and unquestionably slaughter millions of Americans.

    Bullchit.

U.S. presidential candidate Yang blasts Chinese response to Rockets

The ongoing controversy and backlash regarding a tweet about Hong Kong from Houston Rockets GM Daryl Morey reached high political levels when U.S. presidential candidate Andrew Yang weighed in.

“The Chinese government banning the Rockets is a terrible move,” Yang tweeted Sunday morning. The response from Chinese organizations comes after Morey tweeted an image early Saturday that read, “Fight For Freedom. Stand With Hong Kong.”

Morey later deleted it, but not before Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta saw it on Twitter and quoted it with a response clarifying that it was not the franchise’s position.

A day later, numerous Chinese sponsors, and even the Chinese Basketball Association — with former Rockets franchise icon Yao Ming as its president — suspended their ties with the team.

In addition, Tencent Sports announced Sunday that all live streaming and news reporting of the Rockets would be suspended. The company gave customers who bought a subscription to watch Houston games online the opportunity to pick another NBA team.

It is not known if any of these moves are permanent. Other than Fertitta’s quote tweet, the Rockets have not issued a public comment.

(Editor’s note: On Sunday night, both Morey and the NBA issued comments regarding the incident.)

For his part, Yang — running as a Democratic candidate for the 2020 U.S. presidential election — used Twitter to show his disapproval with the extent of the backlash.

Yang, a 44-year-old enterpreneur, is one of 12 Democratic candidates for president scheduled to take part in an official Oct. 15 debate. He’s certainly not a conventional politician, and this isn’t the first time that Yang has used his Twitter feed to weigh in on NBA matters.

Later Sunday, fellow Democratic presidential candidate Julian Castro — who formerly served as the U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and as the mayor of his native San Antonio, Texas — echoed Yang’s sentiment:

In Houston, the Chinese Consulate General issued its own statement Sunday to express “strong dissatisfaction” with the Rockets:

We are deeply shocked by the erroneous comments on Hong Kong made by Mr. Daryl Morey, general manager of the Houston Rockets. We have lodged representations and expressed strong dissatisfaction with the Houston Rockets, and urged the latter to correct the error and take immediate concrete measures to eliminate the adverse impact.

The Rockets have had a significant number of Chinese fans and revenues since 2002, when Houston drafted Yao No. 1 overall in the NBA Draft. The 7-foot-6 center averaged 19.0 points and 9.2 rebounds in 32.5 minutes per game across eight seasons in Houston.

Though his career was cut short by injuries, forcing his retirement in 2011, Yao’s brief tenure was impactful enough that he is already a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Just last week, the Shanghai Sharks — once owned by Yao — visited Houston to play the Rockets in a preseason game.

As recently as last season, the Rockets even had alternate uniforms with Chinese lettering to acknowledge fans in China.

Located on China’s Southeast coast, Hong Kong is now officially a Special Administrative Region of China. But the territory was under British rule as a colony for a very extended period before being transferred to China in 1997.

Pro-democracy residents of Hong Kong have long accused China of slowly encroaching on their rights, and a government proposal earlier this year to change extradition laws to allow suspects in Hong Kong to be sent to mainland China to face trial ignited numerous protests.

The extradition bill was recently withdrawn, but the youth-led protests have now morphed into a wider anti-government movement. They’ve also become larger and more violent in recent weeks. (Read more about the dispute’s background at USA Today.)

Though Fertitta appeared to rebuke Morey publicly in his response to the Hong Kong tweet, he later clarified that “everything is fine” between himself and the GM, whom he regards as the NBA’s best.

Morey is currently in Asia with other Rockets executives, coaches, and players, who return to preseason play on Tuesday and Thursday in Saitama, Japan. That’s where the Rockets will face the defending NBA champion Toronto Raptors in the NBA Japan Games 2019.

The team is scheduled to arrive back in Houston on Friday.
