    New Budget Deal

The Pentagon gets almost 1.5 trillion over the next 2 years. The entire rest of the government gets 1.3 trillion. So the military commands more discretionary spending than the entire rest of the government combined including the VA.

I'm not blaming this on Trump nor republicans but our government as a whole. Can someone explain to me why we need to spend such an exorbitant sum on the military? Are we at imminent risk of being attacked or something? Driving into work I was thinking about the military and how all the lives lost for the last 50 years have really not been in defense of America. The war against ISIS (which Trump has been great at btw) was technically defending our country I guess, but I can't think of any other military conflict that ended up being worth it in regards to young lives lost or shattered and money spent.

We needed to do Afghanistan in the immediate wake of 9/11 because AQ & OBL were there. The scope should have been finding and killing OBL, Al Zahawari, and other AQ leaders and then leaving. It turned into an 18 year and counting morass after we had OBL surrounded at Tora Bora then let him slip away, but the original war there was justified and would have been "worth it" had we finished it at Tora Bora.

I would like to see how much things cost vs charged. Like what is the actual cost of the product. What red tape do companies have to jump through to make these products and how much of a mark up do they charge for equipping the military. How much of this budget goes to black projects that we will never see what, how and where it is spent until 20 yrs from now. The F-35 is 13 yrs old. Who knows what is in the pipeline now and has been since it was announced.

Are we in an imminent situation, directly attacking our home land most likely not. Are we in an imminent situation on other fronts such as what is going on with Iran, yes. Unfortunately, we've been tasked with the World Sheriff duties, we are the only country who can effectively counter Russia and China on a military level. If their was another country along side us, then the cost to us would be less, that's just a guess. Lets face it, the UN is a complete joke if they didn't have the US to back them up.

I'm not justifying the need for a larger than needed budget. Cuts could be made and should be made. Our government has a huge spending problem and it's not just with the military.

The costs and markup are shown in all proposals over TINA thresholds, which IIRC is $750K at the lowest and $1.25M at the highest depending on the FAR. Those numbers are scrutinized quite a bit as well.

However, all those other hoops that suppliers jump through for the Government due drive costs up quite a bit

Are we supposed to just take your word for it or are you going to actually post a source?

Don't even bother. FOr your sake, I'll just assume you are easily fooled. Most liberals get duped by a breakdown of ONLY the discretionary spending. Once you add in the mandatory spending on entitlements, you can then see that military spending doesn;t even come close to 25% of the federal budget. Have some perspective.
    https://www.thebalance.com/u-s-feder...akdown-3305789

Government spending is in three categories: Mandatory, which is at $2.841 trillion; Discretionary at $1.426 trillion; and interest on the national debt, $479 billion. This article provides a detailed breakdown of each. You can also find links to past budgets at the end.

That's kind of what I was getting at, all the red tape. I work in a hospital. If you need to replace a tv or microwave in your break room, you can't just go to Walmart and get a tv or microwave. It has to be hospital approved and cost is stupid ridiculous for that.

Yea but there are reasons too - with the military you can't have something fail and find out you went to some chintzy supplier for a spare part.

Similarly, at least with the military, the big ticket items are all made in the US so they are essentially subsidizing a large number of jobs.

Now he's talking entitlements, not discretionary spending. The military budget is as big as the rest of the discretionary spending (3.2% of GDP vs 3.1% for nondefense). However, entitlement spending is much bigger than either (SS + Medicare + Medicaid = roughly 10% of GDP).

Thanks for post. And I don't mean this aimed at anyone in particular, but people forget this concept alot and it muddies discussion a good bit.

Here are some statistics that will blow your mind. We had our last balanced budget in 2001. Since then, inflation is up 44%, tax collections are up 67%, and government spending is up an astounding 106%! That's right, government spending has increased at more than twice the rate of inflation. We hear democrats talk all the time about raising taxes, but the truth is, we don't have a tax collection problem, we have a spending problem.

Both sides are to blame for this. No one wants to cut spending. No one wants to push back the age of social security despite the fact that people are living longer. Our healthcare system is a cluster regardless of how much money we throw at it. We try to play the world's police, and we spend an astronomical amount on our military. Spending is out of control.

Our government should be required to pass a balanced budget every year unless we're in an economic crisis.

I totally agree with you on that one. The military budget should be half of what it is and our foreign military presence should be taken down to near 0.

    So ......

    $1,500,000,000,000 for our military

Currently have roughly $2 million active and reserves.

That's $750k per troop. Ouch. I think we could improve some efficiency there.

    It's not just direct pay

DoD contracts span far and wide in this country

One could call it wealth redistribution plus the invisible hand and all that

Military spending also drives a lot of the technology we enjoy day to day. There's good and bad. There's dead weight throughout the DoD for sure. The F-35 is just a long line of spending gone haywire.
