They should pay teachers based on results. Give their students a test before class starts and one on the last day. If there is a drastic improvement the teacher gets a big bonus. If not much improvement or any improvement they don't get any bonus.

Problem is, most of these people want to get paid for doing little to no actual work. People with money know this and that's why they send their kids to private school.

All of them public schools from what I remember. At least 95% of them.

Either way, its way too much for taking the entire second quarter off.

Here's the problem with that. Study after study has shown that kids' academic achievement has way more to do with parent involvement than teacher proficiency. Parents treat public school like free daycare. My ex, after having to drag some ghetto trash parents for a parent-teacher conference told the parent that reading to their kids will help them learn to read. Their response? Well, that's your job, not mine. That's what teachers are up against.

I calculated out using an average teacher's salary and they made somewhere around $50/hr not including their cushy benefits and pensions. If they worked full time it would be well over $100k/year job.

I still think they earn every penny but to complain that you don't make enough is pure ignorance.

    Example:

    Avg US teacher's salary = $60,477
Hours worked - 8:30-3:30 = 7 hrs - 35 hrs/week. pretty sure they have a lunch break in there but we won't include because of all the extra "work" they do after 3 pm when in reality they just wait for the last kid to get picked up.
    Weeks worked = 40
    Total hours/year = 1,400

    Holidays = 17 days = 119 hrs
    3 weeks of PTO = 105 hrs
    1,400 hrs - 119 hrs - 105 hrs = 1176 hrs per year

    Avg teacher $/hr salary = $51/hr

    That's a $106k/year job @ full time

    For comparison:
    Typical 40 hr/week job = 2080 hrs
    Holidays = 5 days = 40 hrs
    3 weeks PTO = 105 hrs

    2080-40-105= 1935 hrs

Full timers work 759 hrs more per year. That's 19 more weeks of work.
teachers don't get PTO. They get a small number of personal days that doubles as sick leave.
Average worker gets 9 holidays per year not 5.
teacher salaries are stepped, you work for **** tier salary for 10 years and then you get your bump. So my wife teaches chemistry in a ****ty school and made 47K before quitting to raise the kids. If she had stayed should we have bumped up to 67K at either 10 or 12 years and then retired making around 100-110

The real crime of teacher compensation is how early they can retire and their pensions being based on 75% of their high 3 earning years plus they carry over their insurance as if they were still working either through the district or through the union which is effectively the same thing. Its criminal

thats exactly what teachers do once they have built up a lesson plan that they can re-purpose year over year, etc... They also get at least 1 planning period that is like a teachers study hall to grade papers, etc...

Pretty much agree with OP, but there is a lot of misinformation ITT.

1st. Teachers don't get the same 3 months a year off that students get. It ends up being closer to 1.5-2 months. They start the school year at least 2 weeks before the students getting lesson plans and their classrooms ready plus dealing with meetings on new rules and crap like that. Same thing happens around Christmas break as well. Its better for them with traditional school years and not year around schools.

2nd. Salary varies wildly by state, but it always seems that its the teachers in the highest paid areas that are always complaining about pay. Chicago seems to go on strike every couple years despite some of the highest pay in the nation with some of the worst schools. Those teachers are scumbags IMO. In some states teachers are making what would be comparable to $20 an hour if it were full time.

3rd. Extrapolating from #2, the areas with low salary are usually underfunded which means they are short on supplies as well. So the teachers are pretty much expected to provide some of their own supplies. That IMO is BS, but if they don't they often get parents complaining directly to them and rather than deal with that chit they just buy the stuff they need. Personally I think this issue is caused 100% by bureaucracy and terrible accounting by the state. Essentially though all k-12 US school districts are a perfect example of the government screwing up spending causing a ton of unnecessary issues.

All that said, becoming a teacher is a ridiculously easy college path, that creates the issue that most teachers are chit and really just become glorified baby sitters. If you truly want your children to succeed you basically NEED to send them to private school and at least one of the parents needs to be hard core locked into the kids education at least up until high school.

In conclusion most teachers who complain about salary are babies right up their with servers who complain about tips. Also any parent who blames the school or teacher for their kid doing poorly in school and that kid isn't clinically retarded is 100% at fault.

You want someone who spends the most important years of a child's life to be the best candidate. You get the best candidates by having a system that pays well. Lower the pay and you have applicants that are unable to secure employment in any other field. Simple.

This is correct. My wife is a teacher. You can reuse some things but not all.

Besides the work, let's not forget dealing with today's parents. Gender issues, social bs, its ridiculous.

Most teachers i know are crybabies and have very little common sense. Most could never make it working in the "real world" just like professors. Those who can't do, teach. Just lmao at crying about making 50k a year for what is basically a part time job.

I know when I was subbing, most of the teachers spent their "conference period" conferencing with their buddies in the teachers lounge.

When I was in college, they would occasionally have education classes in one of the engineering buildings. It was kind of amusing walking out of thermodynamics and seeing them in the next classroom cutting things out of construction paper.

I know in significant detail what teachers have to go through. I think their pay is fine. What you should be more worried about is biased political teachers and either false history or doctored history being taught.

Depends on where tbh. Big city teachers with unions can make decent money for sure.

But there is a massive dropoff comparing them to just about any other area. I went to school in a mostly rural area where teachers make chit. My son's teachers in rural Colorado make chit.

Both of my parents are teachers, and have been for 15+ years in the state of California.

Below is the pay scale. Its based on years of service and credentials. You max out your years of service and the only way to get a raise is to get a higher level degree. That degree costs money (10-20k)

What is important to note, is that teachers do not get 10 weeks of PTO. The salary is only paid through the school year.
Teachers have two options: Get paid for 9 months or spread their salary over the entire year.
Additionally, there is no 401k. Even with a maxed out pension (years of service/credentials) that pension is worth only 40k a year. Imagine retiring with only a 3k pay check every month.

With that out of the way, let me explain the life of a GOOD teacher. MOST teachers are pathetic, dont get me wrong. We have all had teachers that come in, dont teach chit, and then leave. They forget their students exist once they leave the school.

My parents were quite different. They arrive at the school around 6:30 am. Respond to emails and deal with random chit. Students would come in, around 30 minutes before the first bell, for tutoring. Classes would resume all day long until around 2 or 3pm. Afterwords, its more tutoring. Once students leave, teachers begin their work. Its up to them to develop a comprehensible lesson plan for the next day. This takes about an hour. Once that's done, quizzes, tests, papers, assignments have to be graded. Depending on the field of study, this can take between an hour and 6 hours a day. After the grading is done, all these scores must be entered into a computer for accurate record keeping. Then the teacher can officially end their day.

My parents started making about 30-40k a year. With their masters degrees, they have just about maxed out their pay structure at 95,000 per year. They can both retire in about 5 years.

They have no investment accounts, no real estate portfolio, a $30,000 savings account, and no assets other than two paid off vehicles and $150,000 equity in their home. They earned this by paying close attention to the real estate market. They would buy and sell at the right times to pay of their student loans, along with other debt, to maintain a good credit score.

They have never been outside of the country besides Mexico. If they're lucky they get to go to Hawaii for a week and take their motorhome on a few trips each year.
They shop at walmart and buy only 1 weeks worth of groceries with a budget of only $100.
Occasionally, they go out to dinner on friday nights.

Teachers are not overpaid. They are not underpaid. They are paid fairly. The problem is the school system. My parents both agree, as a country, we are too lenient on students.

teachers are overpaid. I got bad news, your parents are horrible decision makers living in an area where the cost of living and their pay don't align.

my buddy's a teacher and he's in on the gig. by that i mean he knows it's a sweet setup.

-summer off, all holidays, and god forbid it snows 3 inches or any severe weather hits
    -extra pay for coaching
-extra pay for side gigs like working "security" (lol) at a baseball game
-strong extra pay for summer school if he chooses to do so
-strong cash pay per hour for tutoring on the side

he is a hustler and does all those things and makes bank. this year he stopped doing summer school because he makes more than enough on the side with the other options above. i can't knock it.

but don't give me the underpaid silliness. get outta here. at least be honest with me.

These must be East Coast teachers or something. In the Midwest a public school teacher makes like 41k, they're contract is for the months they worked. They aren't getting paid for the summer off and the two teachers I know have second jobs or are working ludicrous extra hours tutoring, coaching, grading papers. Iirc a lot quit by year 5. If you want to bitch about teachers being overpaid look at college administrators and professors.

It's really by the state. In rural Alabama, ain't no teacher is ballin' out on a $90K public school salary unless they teach at a college.

    $29K average....

Just going to address the point in bold, but 3k a month assuming zero out of pocket investment is a pretty fkn strong retirement plan. Combine that with social security, personal investments if you have any common sense, and the fact that at that age you should no longer be paying on a mortgage or vehicle notes and you've got a pretty effing comfortable retirement. Just because your parents didn't bother to plan to have a little extra come retirement doesn't mean they couldn't have. Even $100/month invested over 30 years leads to a pretty healthy egg for a bare minimum investment.

Not only do they have to deal with kids, they have to deal with parents. Their job doesn't start when the kids show up and when they leave. They don't stop working in the summer, they are constantly going to meetings and trainings to keep up with standards.

If you went to school and were actually aware, you would have seen how hard your teachers had to work first hand. IF any of you had kids, you would see how hard they work first hand.

Teachers deserve wages akin to doctors, IMO.

I honestly don't blame people for not wanting to be teachers. No one respects them.

Bunch of slack jaw ****ing phaggots in this thread and OP is the king. And yes, if you go to school for 7 years and get a PHD, you should make 6 figures.

if only there were some sort of market mechanism that allowed people to get paid what they're worth

Teachers are not overpaid. They are not underpaid. They are paid fairly.
I have no idea how you came to this conclusion when the only determinants are years of service and credentials.
Under that system, someone liek Pau Gasol, aka 20 year vet, 2x NBA champion, 6x allstar, would be earning 10x more than Paul George.

Looking back 20 years later at the quality of public school teachers I had as a kid, they should all get pay cuts.

I originally went to school planning to become a high school teacher. I eventually bailed on the idea because the pay is just that much of a joke.

brb get a new chitty summer job somewhere or moonlight permanently just to make what you can at some jobs that don't even require a degree.

brb spend a lot more time working than the 8am - 3:30pm class times organizing lesson plans, trying to figure out how to help struggling students, etc., but get paid on salary and not by the hour.

brb make legit poverty wages if you want to teach at a private school where they might let you do your job more than the ridiculously over-manufactured public school programs that don't allow for teachers to personalize any lesson plans/materials to do a better job.

It's not nearly as glamorous of a job as some of you are making it out to be. Unless you're one of the very few making more than 30-60k in many areas, the 3 months off in summer sucks because it means you need to get another job and/or moonlight all year long to make a legit income you'd expect with a professional career. Can you imagine being a math, science, history, English, secone language, etc. HS teacher dealing with tons of chitheaded kids all day long, and dealing with their ingrate parents who care more about the football/basketball/baseball/hockey programs than academics for ~50k /year? Not to mention the fact that you'll be working 10 - 12 hours /day depending on the time of year if you want to actually do a good job that places emphasis on student development above all else. That's not even mentioning elementary school teachers who get to deal with bratty chitheaded 5 - 10 year olds all day lol.
