depends on what city you are moving to, which is why I think ranks sometimes can be BS, terrible states overall can have some decent cities, seems like you can probably afford to move to a high end area.

A couple of things to consider OP. Your salary will go down by a LOT unless you plan on purchasing an agency (which wouldn't be a bad idea). I don't care what anyone has told or promised you.
What part of the state are you looking at?
The Huntsville area is really nice. The population is younger and more educated than the other metros in AL. It's also at the very north end of the state so there are mountains close by if that is important to you.
Birmingham is the largest city in the state and used to be the industrial center of the state. It is in the northern half and in the foothills. Here your going to want to live in one of the suburbs like Vestavia Hills or Mountain Brook.
Montgomery is the Capital city and the metro is about half a million people. This is the city that people think of when they think of Alabama. Some of the nicest suburbs in the state are in this metro but the city itself is a chithole. Like seriously a chithole. Also get ready to fork out some big money for private school unless you want your children violently beaten on a daily basis.
Mobile is a beautiful city that is right on the coast. There aren't any beaches in Mobile though so be prepared to drive about 45 min to Gulf Shores if that is important to you. Mobile has a bit of the New Orleans flavor in the way downtown looks with the architecture. Also it has those beautiful live oaks everywhere with the moss hanging and all that good chit. If you choose Mobile there are some great public schools across the bay in Baldwin county (the same place with the beaches)6'2"

Mobile is kind of a rough place brah (what with the mobile leprechaun and all). I'd suggest maybe auburn. College towns have more to do. Outside of there, your biggest choices are:
-tuscaloosa: not TOO bad. The city is getting nicer (i live an hour away)
-Montgomery: HELLA ghetto
-B'ham: Not so bad if you stay away from downtown. The place is REALLY spread out“That is not dead which can eternal lie, And with strange aeons even death may die.” - The Nameless City by HP Lovecraft

Mobile isn't as bad as it used to be. The spring hill section is absolutely beautiful. Also, as I'm sure you know, pretty much every southern city requires you to live in the suburbs if you have school age kids.
I went to visit family in Tuscaloosa last year and it has EXPLODED. Since the football team has been good the entire town has expanded. Nick Saban is worth every penny of his contract.6'2"

Dear lord....must have been a kidney thief giving him that advice.
Good advice. in the south, the suburbs is where the nice neighborhoods are city gun laws dont mean fukking chit anymore (not that there are many in AL anyway).
If you move to to an SEC town, then your mind will be blown at the women that manifest on game day. Any other day, witht he women walking around, you'll almost want to bang chewbacca (RIP) before those swamp donkeys“That is not dead which can eternal lie, And with strange aeons even death may die.” - The Nameless City by HP Lovecraft

My parents are thinking about moving to the South to either South Carolina or Tennessee when my Dad retires. I have a stupid question regarding this. How are Italians received down south? Or any Mediterranean people for that matter. Is the South hating on swarthy Europeans an old myth? Is it something that died out 100 years ago? Or is it still an issue?

Reason my family plans to leave NY is because of our Commie Governor Cuomo. The taxes are ridiculous here, the gun laws aren’t ideal, and Democrats are ruining the state. We are trying to find a more Conservative state with good weather. From a political perspective we’d fit better in the South no doubt. Culturally I might miss the great Italian and Greek food/areas here but it may be a trade I’ll have to make. I haven’t decided if I’d go with them if they decided to make the move yet.

Not hard to have a low health care rating when the population you serve doesn't give a chit about their health or lifestyle. It's also not uncommon to have a person who's suffered 3 heart attacks continue to eat mctripple whoppers and drink pepsi all day.... people down south just don't care about their health so that's why the health care rating is so low.. LOW SUCCESS RATES due to STUPID PATIENTS.

Thanks a lot for all the info bro.
I'm working on getting an agency contract with the captive carrier I'm with. If I get approved, I have my choice if openings anywhere in the country. Starting book size is the same everywhere, so obviously that would go further down south.
So far I've looked mostly at Mobile because browsing Zillow, it has more of what I'd want (newer, modern homes on giant lots). I'm shocked how few homes have basements though, if tornados really exist there.
Plan at the moment is homeschool anyway, so I'm not AS worried about the school system. Still would rather not live near a ghetto though.
Any idea how easy your CCW is to get there?480s / 370b / 495d / 235 x 2 SOHP
