    Calorie Shakes as main source of food?

    Hello. I take medication that makes my appetite disappear. It is very difficult for me to reach my calorie goals with regular food so I have been thinking about supplementing with calorie shakes. This would make up half of my calorie goal per day. The shakes would include milk, oats, and berries.

    How do you feel about this? Do you find calories shakes less effective that real food?

    Milk, oats and berries all sound like real whole foods to me.

    They are just as effective but they don't satisfy your hunger generally

    A shake would still consist of real food, just in liquid form. Maybe talk to your Doctor to see if there is a alternative medication you can take that may not effect your appetite as much. How much of your calories are you looking to supplement with shakes?

    I would suggest using full fat milk or an alternative fat source (nut butter, avocado) and adding whey protein to round out your macros if you go this route.

    I am going for 1500 with shakes. That should leave me with 3 normal meals a day.

    Shakes can be a great addition to your diet, especially when bulking. Just make sure to use real food instead of "gainers," as they are full of adders. I personally start the day with a solid shake so I can knock out about 1/4 of my calories before leaving the house.

    My Current Shake (measurements adjust with my caloric goals)
    40g Spinach
    180g Banana
    600g Fat Free Milk
    27g Peanut Butter
    27g Whey
    120g Oats

    Macros = 143C/23F/75P = 1,080 Calories

    came to say this!

    I will add that I would suggest spreading them out during the day (but not 100% necessary), some studies suggest you can only process so much protein at once.

    I have 5 - 7 scoops of protein shake per day. Usually 1 to start the day. 1 between lunch and dinner. Three after working out, and 1 or 2 before bed. Various foods are high in calories. A 500g bag of pasta has between 1680 - 1750 calories. Rice, oatmeal, and peanut butter are also high in calories. Three big meals throughout the day always make me tired, so I prefer to have 6 smaller meals spread out throughout the day, and wake up earlier just to get the first meal in for the day.
