I have some street and track time on an 1199. They're fast. They sound great. But on the street the sound novelty wears off quick when your legs roast from the heat and your upper body succumbs to the ergonomics. Also you go through tires pretty quick on a big bike on the track.
I think the best route for track bikes is to buy something that's already prepped.

Sage advice, thank you for that.
Lmaoo. I will consider it for sure. I see people actually track them, too, allegedly. My commute is about to increase from 6 mi to 12 mi, rip. But good point about my son being able to fuk around on it when he's a little bigger. Looks like the "older" ones are $2.8k-3k, not bad...

if you look a couple posts back, i got my 2014 with 114 (yes one hundred and fourteen) miles for $2k, granted it was off of a friend of a friend. I'm sure you can find some that are more closer to the $2k range, although as expected people probably beat the crap out of them.
but yeah, i def wouldn't want to do 6-12 miles of highway on the grom if thats your commute. 6-12 miles locally you can def hack it** KNEE DRAGGERS UNITE **

Oh and for a track bike you should consider something you can race. The 300s are affordable but you'll get passed by the 98 lb kids (somewhat lol). The lightweight twins class has morphed into a checkbook league which is exactly the opposite of what was intended. That leaves 600s kept in almost stock trim so you can race a few classes aka welcome to the thunderdome.

I'll definitely consider the grom. It looks fun. Maybe I just need to get two bikes hahah, so hard to choose just one.. I found the WR250 SM for like $3.5k. After seeing y'all talk about the DRZs I was even thinking about a SM.
Good point on the track bikes. I guess I'm not really aware of all the different classes and stuff. Everyone says to start and learn on a smaller cc bike for the track, you still think the 600 class would be easy to learn in?
I tried quoting y'all but it kept not letting me post when I did.

It depends on your experience. With the smaller bikes you have to learn braking and momentum and corner speed, but they don't really teach you the throttle control you need on big bikes. But you're much better off starting with them than a big bike. I started on an SV 650 so I had to pass on the brakes. Now I have a 600 so I have more options.

Is there a shortage of sport bikes on Craigslist in yalls area? Atlanta's market has been dry; never seen it this bad. I could sell my 2011 zx6r for more than I paid for it in 2016. Used market is crazy, so scarce right. Seems like you can only find new bikes.

popping into this thread to get some opinions if any of you got the time/willing to chime in
Been looking at getting a bike for years...always kinda been on the backburner but i'm getting close to being financially ready to acquire one.
After tons of searching and sifting through all different styles and makes of bike (Ducati Scrambler, Indian Scout Bobber, Indian Scout FTR, Honda Rebel, Yamaha Bolt, Triump Thruxton, Honda CB500F, and all the typical sport bikes) , I think I finally settled on the Yamaha XSR 700. Nice blend of retro styling with modern day guts, should be plenty of power for me to grow with and enjoy for quite some time rather than having to trade up within 6 months -1 year.
Reasoning: i love the older style cafe racer/cruiser/bobber look (i know they're all a bit different...but bear with me), which the XSR satisfies. It's a bit more modern and angular, which I don't mind as I also love the lines of modern sport bikes/naked bikes. I do have some previous riding experience...a little street, but plenty on dirt so that's why I feel comfortable going with this bike from the getgo, rather than starting on a 250-400 then upgrading after a while. Was leaning towards new as there aren't really any options in the way of used, and the few that are out there are pretty similarly priced with new.
*I'm also still considering the option of buying a first beater bike then upgrading like so many here and elsewhere recommend, either to practice on a smaller engine, or so I don't worry about dumping the bike which many say only increases the likelihood of dumping
lemme know your thoughts bros. Heavily leaning towards a new one, there's a few within range of where I live. Don't even have my motorcycle permit/license yet, but planning to get the permit this weekend and then sign up for a motorcycle safety course soon after."So there I am sitting in the waiting area of the hair salon with my niece and Keanu Reeves walks in. I was nervous as ****, but too scared to say anything to him. Then my niece started crying, and I’m trying to quiet her down because I don't want to bother him. Pretty soon he walks over and asks what's wrong. I replied that she was probably hungry. He put down his magazine, picked up my niece, and lifted up his shirt, and breastfed her right there in the salon. Chill guy, really nice about it."

The XSR 700 is a MT07 with cafe looks. Amazing bike. However, I'd get a used one. Reason being, you should almost never buy a new bike as your first bike. But if what you're saying is true in regard to not finding a good deal used, go ahead and get new. You are learning and mistakes will happen in one way or another. Either way, the XSR 700 can be a starter bike and end game bike. It's just that good.
I own an FZ07/MT07 and I don't think I'd ever get bored with it. It's always fun and exhilarating to ride.☼ "Don't stop. Never quit. No excuses." ☼

Got it. seems to confirm all my thoughts lol. My plan for now is to hit the DMV this weekend and snag a moto permit, then enroll shortly thereafter for a motorcycle safety course and snag a helmet, boots, and gloves since those are required to take the safety course. Once i have that in the bag, then I'll start shopping around

Looking to replace my old Cortech leather jacket. Hard to find an all black, non perforated leather jacket.

yep I've ridden my neighbors. Felt like it'd be more fun than my fat DRZ400. I ride like a doosh so the displacement doesn't really matter too much as long as I can do long wheelies
I think the closest KTM dealer is like 2 hours away. no thx jeff
The new 6 speed Honda CRF300 looks pretty sick. Going to wait and see how it is once reviews start coming in for that bike. If it's solid I might even have to pull the trigger on either the dual sport model or the "rally" adventure model

could any brahs give me some insight? i attempted to install a fresh battery on my 2016 wide glide but its drawing to somewhere on the bike and i cant pin point where? almost sounds like its coming from underneath or inside the gas tank? perhaps the fuel pump?
