These are arguments against drafting a TE high in the draft, and you are correct, but HayZues is agreeing with that. His point is to make sure you have a top one one way or another. In the draft, there are always a couple of "can't miss" guys (i.e. Kelce or Gronk) that are justifiable high picks, but other than that, it's a game of either knowing which late round flyer is going to break out (i.e. Waller, Andrews) or making a trade early in the year once you see who is actually balling to make sure you have the position solidified.
The analysis is correct. HAVING an elite TE is critical, DRAFTING a TE early in the draft is not necessarily the way to do it, though, unless you're getting a can't miss guy.

That's why I said I agree with drafting TE late. If I didn't get one of the top 3 guys this year, I wasnt going to draft a TE until last few rounds.
I'm saying once a few guys elevate themselves, dont be afraid to go after them. The VoR of a good TE is higher than other positions.
Ironically, I also believe if there is a position you can afford to be weak at, its TE. Since most your opponents will be too.
You either want a top TE or punt in the position completely imo. OJ Howard would never make my team.Ol' 71st street. The devil that birthed me.

McCoy is an average NFL backup, but he's a game manager who lacks elite NFL arm strength. McLaurin is a burner with 4.3 speed who was actually drafted as a punt gunner because of his straight line speed who is averaging 16 yards per catch. They are not a good fit at all. McCoy in the game benefits Thompson and hurts McLaurin.

Man this dude is relentless with his TE offers.
His most recent one is: I give Locket and G. Tate and I get Waller, T. Coleman, and MVS
Current Team: ppr, start 3 WR
RB: Chubb, Sony, Peterson, Gore, Darrely Williams, Mattison
WR: Hopkins, Diggs, Locket, Tate, Robby Anderson
TE: Ebronhttps://www.bogleheads.org/ for excellent investing advice for beginners

He has been a great all around receiver, but the extent of his route running and other receiving skills at this point in his development have been somewhat of a surprise to everyone, including the Redskins. He was originally drafted as high as the third round because of his speed and ability to be an impact special teamer right away, and that is still a primary asset that will be underutilized with a QB like McCoy who can't get the ball effectively downfield to him.

Stop this. Terry McLaurin was NOT drafted as a “punt gunner.” NFL teams do not spend 3rd round draft picks on a guy only seen as a special teams player. Just stop it.
You can say he was expected to contribute on special teams while he developed as a rookie. And that would be fine, and accurate.
But to simply state that he was drafted to be a gunner is just silly, and wrong.MFC

We're saying the same thing. He wasn't drafted thinking his whole career would be on special teams, but going into the draft, he was viewed as a project as a route runner who would take time to develop as a receiver and would not have been drafted as high as he was if he wasn't seen as an immediate contributor on special teams because of his speed. His development as a receiver has been far greater than anyone anticipated.
