Atlantis Commercial Piece--Rope instead of cable???

I have the opportunity to buy this Atlantis adjustable cable station for my basement gym. I am not a big fan of cable crossovers so that's why I prefer just a single stack cable machine. Plus I like the fact it adjust from low to high and in between for a bigger variety of exercises. The design allows the machine to fit into a corner so it doesn't take up a lot of room. I have several other pieces of Atlantis equipment and all of them are built like a tank! So I was shocked when I realized it wasn't a "real" cable used, it was rope! In the second picture you can see the rope goes through the threaded rod and is secured with a knot. It wasn't the seller doing it himself. I have a picture of the same machine from a completely different source and a rope is used. Am I missing something with Atlantis doing this?

I know we have other Canadians on this board....has anyone used this exact piece? If I can figure out this rope vs cable thing is it the same quality I've come to expect from Atlantis? Solid base....not tippy?

Nothing wrong with rope, will have less wear resistance but this in indoors not winch on a Jeep.

I would call Atlantis and ask about it and/or see if they can sell you a replacement cable.

Personally, I’ve never seen rope used in that type of machine. Only cables and chains.

Thanks for the reply guys. I'm 99.999% sure its original from the factory because of seeing other pictures of the same machine for sale else where. What I can't figure out is how the rope is secured with two set screws in the end of the snap hook. It really soured me from buying it.

I dunno why you'd sour, I'd buy it and figure it out later. Rope works for cranes, so it surely can work for exercise equipment. It'd probably be easy enough to convert to cable, if you so desired.

Rope is most likely a replacement ordered from a Fitness Replacement Parts Place, or like you said original from the company. I know of a few other brands Like Magnum that offered Rope, as well as there being a rope replacement option on Full Circle. Quite a bit more expensive as well.

I wouldn't worry much about the strength or wear potential of the rope Atlantis engineers their gear pretty well FWIW I have a couple of million meters on a concept2 skierg with likely a higher loading and rope speed than that cable station is going to see.

If you are interested search dyneema rope strength. Only ozone, UV radiation or grit in bedded in it seem to hurt the stuff.

My Atlantis DAP uses rope. Actually, I had the Body Masters FT1000 functional trainer, and it used rope also.

Rope is actually an advantage if you have to adjust slack. You simply untie the knot and either move it closer or further. Plus, it is MUCH smoother than cable.

Rope is used to be able to have smaller pulley diameters in the machine.
