Don't listen to the people that say 'pay more'. I've tried it and its 100% not true.

It really is about the people you hire. You'll come across amazing lower wage employees that have incredible work ethic and morals. More often than not, you will get the opposite. I've tried just about everything giving big EASY bonuses/commission, increasing hourly wage significantly... It still didn't change the ****ty employees with ****ty attitudes/work ethic to do any better. They will still try to take advantage of a system anyway they can. Your best bet is to find GOOD employees, and then keep them around by specifically increasing their wages/bonus structure. I do what I can now to the most extreme to keep GOOD employees around and if they really are wanting to move along I do everything in my power to help them get a better job. If a person comes to me asking if I have any employees that might fit good in their company I wouldn't mind giving up, I'll be more than happy to suggest one of my GOOD employees if I think it would be a good step up for them.

These are the people you don't want to hire, the people that think "I'm getting paid X amount, so I'm only going to do X amount of work/effort.". Find the employee that will work hard and constantly hustling/not ****ing off and then pay them what you need to, to keep them around. Usually those good workers will find out that they can move up pretty quick and be looking for employment elsewhere.

The people that have the mindset of I'm only getting paid minimum so I'm going to give my minimum effort, they will be like that forever. They might get a better job elsewhere, but it will be the same mindset and the "im getting paid so much more" view will wear off and its back to the same well I'm still only getting paid X amount so you wont get my full effort view.

Love the energy drinks idea! My country brahs will love it. What about for my inner city brahs? They don't get amped up over energy drinks, lol.

Why is everyone saying "min wage min effort?" $13 isn't min, and with tips it's closer to $22 / hour... I agree with the person above, i've paid through the nose to try and attract people, it doesn't work. I'm looking for systems and unconventional methods to motivate my employees.

Hire illegals and teach them english, get to know them etc. No i dont think they should be here but where i live people are so pampered you could pay $25/hr for that job they would still call out.

PS for $13 + tips illegals will treat you like God. Fair warning though it could negatively impact your usiness image

Pay them what they're worth, $13 is fine for someone washing a car, but for paint correction and such, that's very low. If you are in fact hiring for low positions, give people a means to move up quickly, and tell them about it, make that the bulk of the compensation, not the money. If the put in the work, are punctual, and learn what they need to, pay them more, if they don't, fire them early and without hesitation.

Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and its purpose in the service of your people. . . . I have several tradie friends who are working way harder and smarter than the other employees and they are still all on the same level. Complaining doesn't help either as the boss doesn't care. Such is low skill work, everyone is replaceable and your "hard work" or "smart work" will most likely just wear you out. Then again you're going to be hard-pressed to find any vertical movement in labour work unless big industries.

You need to go with your gut and also have a bit of lady luck on your side.

Employees, just like bosses, are really hit or miss. References don't really work. Pay works up until a certain point. You need to hire people with the right work ethic and motivation. Some groups of people are raised to be diligent and take pride in their work. Others are quite lazy and enjoy pretending to be busy whilst also focusing on looking good to everyone. Really toxic types that typify the typical workplace.

I would say put in place a system that rewards hard work. Make is so if they do so many cars they are rewarded with a bonus each day, or something like that. Also agree with another poster ITT about letting them set their own schedule and giving the good workers as many hours as they want. This will make the good workers not only more motivated, and rewarded, but they will also pick up the slack of the chit workers. Also most people think 13+ tips = 14-16 per hour not 20. That’s not very competitive pay.

Some jobs will have a high turnover rate no matter what you do, its in the nature of the job.
I believe the only solution is luck in this case, hiring and firing untill you hit a jackpot.

    Reliable laborers... ay lmao.

Even professionals with degrees up the wazoo and 3 kids are not all reliable. You're not going to find reliable bottom feeder tradies on demand. Dealing with chitty workers and turnovers is part of running the show, get used to it.

I don't know what you're doing, but the best way is to make people invested in what they're doing.

Maybe a weekly bonus program for getting things done well?

Really it depends on what you're doing too. It has to seem important and if you can make it a mission with a bonus, that might help.

    Bingo

IDK regulations and what not but you need people with integrity.

How much revenue do they bring in for an hour of work?

If the detail costs $100 and they are only getting $13, I wouldn't be very motivated either. Detailing is pretty labor intensive for the amount you're paid. There's easier jobs for the money. $20/hr is probably inconsistent.

I think these types of jobs naturally have high turnover. You'll probably have to pay more.

Get this for the city folk

Just an idea, perhaps offer free breakfast (something cheap like bagels), but it's only if they arrive by a certain time. Definitely an incentive for people to show up 15 min earlier.

Get in a better trade that quality young people want to learn. Get a better personality so you're not such a prick to work for. Offer FULL benefits including paid holidays, paid vacation, 401K/IRA, pension, profit sharing and paid sick time.

Why would anyone good want to work for you if you don't offer those things even if they wanted to learn the trade?

You need to realize we are all mercenaries now. Competent reliable people don't need your job, but we know you need us. How long would you work the position and what would it take to retain yourself? We both know you would have one foot out the door, just like pretty much every competent employee you've ever had. Menial jobs get menial people.
