    Diver films his own death

This video is very old but I had never seen it before and it showed up in my recommended list, so I watched it.
I have to say this is by far the most disturbing, bone chilling video I've ever seen.

I did some digging on the backstory. Will keep cliffs as short as possible:

    - The location is the 'Blue Hole' In the Red Sea
    - Location is described as 'The Mt Everest for divers', attracts divers from all over the world.
    - The sink hole features the 'arch', which is a tunnel approx 50m deep leading into the ocean.
    - The blue hole has taken the lives of over 100 divers, as they attempt to dive and make their way through the arch, but succumb to nitrogen narcosis. Others do not even see the tunnel and continue to descend deeper thinking they just hadn't found it yet, only to find the pressure so great that they are forced to the sea bed, never to return to the surface.

Cliffs on the man in the video Yuri Lipski:

    - He came to the Blue Hole with the intention to dive down and swim/video the arch, he was a professional diver
    - He met with Omar, a man who had dived the arch hundreds of times and is also a professional diver and told him of his intentions to swim and record a video of the arch.
    - Omar stated he told Yuri, 'OK, you will need two weeks training with me first, then we can film'
    - Spending only the weekend in the area, Yuri turned down the offer and went about the dive alone, the rest is what you see in the video.

    How he drowned:

It is thought that Yuri was descending and looking for the arch, when at some point possibly due to nitrogen narcosis he descended too far without realising. He attempted to use his BCD (buoyancy control device) to pull him back toward the surface, however it was speculated that his camera equipment etc was too heavy. Not only that but he had descended so far that the pressure massively outweighed the BCD anyway.
His frantic actions are likely the result of narcosis, but not only that, at that depth the oxygen in his tank would have compressed and actually becomes toxic. They say it's a bit like feeling drunk, unable to properly understand and resolve the situation.
Omar recovered the body a couple days later to find the BCD was fully inflated, Yuri was face down and had removed his mask, presumably after he realised his fate.

I can't think of many worse ways to die than falling to the sea bed, knowing there is absolutely nothing you can do.

The increased pressure doesn't make you heavier (at least not to any significant degree until you get so deep that it begins to crush your body). You are buoyed up by the weight of the water that you displace, which is based on the volume of your body and crap attached to you.

If his BC was fully inflated then it had the same buoyant force at 30' below the surface as it would at 300' below the surface (Archimedes principle).

**** man brings back memories of nearly drowning trying to save my little bro in the sea when we were kids.

Actually drowning makes you feel like your heads about to explode, despite what people say it’s horrific.

I dont like the ocean. That plus the sounds he makes and putting myself in that position just feels horrendous.

I think that it's widely been accepted/proven that drowing is one of the most painful/unpleasant ways to die that there is. It's one of the top 3 with being burned alive. I think it's actually #2.

Watched this a while ago, pretty interesting. Ended up going down the rabbit hole of diving videos.
Reminds me of the David Shaw story, he was trying to recover a body that had been underwater for a long time, I'm sure it was like 10-15 years or something. That very dive ended up being his last, he died while trying to recover the body of a man he never met, just to bring closure to his family.

It's the build up up CO2 in your lungs that is so uncomfortable, not the lack of oxygen. When you fill your lungs with water it expels all of the CO2, which is why people say that it's not painful to drown.

They're not talking about the moments of terror before that happens.

I thought water actually entering the lungs is extremely painful?

the worst of those videos is the cave explorer who got stuck in a hole while upside down, they couldn't free him and he slowly died with people literally right next to him

sorry dude. rebreathers are a different animal, not sure I would ever really want to do tec stuff with one. pretty much everyone who dies in florida caves is because they dive past their experience level

They can be pretty technical, especially some of the mixed gas ones that we dive (no magnetic signature, 300' deep max and can last for 8 hours).

It was pretty hard to watch (video cuts out before they go down, but the full version is available elsewhere).

Horrifying moment two men are sucked to their deaths by strong currents in US river as onlookers film rather than help
This is why you should never jump in to save a person drowning unless you really know what you're doing. Chances are they'll cling on to you and drag you down with them. Far better to throw a rope or something they can latch on to, or worst case stay near by, wait for them to stop moving then attempt to revive them.
That title is dumb, 'as onlookers film rather than help'. Yea its scummy to film, but you really cant help in that situation, not like there's a nice inflatable raft laying around they can just throw in.

Agree but its some peoples passion I guess. Like those cavers who slide their bodies like snakes through gaps so tight they can barely get through without breathing out fully.
Or worse, those same type of caves but underwater. Darwinism

A good technique is to swim out to them and then dive under the water a few yards before you get to them, swimming under them and coming up behind them, gripping them with one hand under their jaw and then swimming one handed side stroke with them in tow. If they try and turn around to climb on you, you have to let them go and repeat the process until they chill out or become exhausted.

Will probably get flamed for this but we were never meant to spend any significant amount of time in water bodies above our head. I have the most introductory training in swimming (boy scouts + 4th grade mandatory pe). If you are a parent and dont get your kid at least basic swimming lessons expect them to drown at some point. I can honestly say they have saved my life more than once.
