Is this too much cardio? Advice needed!

I've recently been eating much healthier and trying to lose weight while also going to the gym more (3-4x per week typically). I've been doing an hour on the elliptical 2-3x per week at high incline and speed 7 out of 10 on both settings. Now I've been told that HIIT is more effective but this is much less harsh on my knees and when I put a podcast on I can do this forever it seems like, albeit I sweat a ton and it still is a good workout.

Is this a good routine I should stick to? Any negatives with doing an hour straight of elliptical a few days a week?
    Thanks for any input!

You have to be your own judge as to whether what you are doing is too much or whether it’s too taxing on you.

Evaluate how you feel, your progress, etc.
    - Your mindset influences your outcome. It's time to take out phrases like "I can't" or "I don't have time" and replace them with phrases like "I will make the time" and "I will keep working at it until I find a way that works." Success starts with the right mindset and believing in yourself and your dreams.

These kinds of questions are hard to answer without context. What does eating healthier mean? What is your maintenance calorie level? What is it now? Trying to lose how much weight? From what weight to what weight? What is your progress so far? Do you do resistance training?

There's absolutely no negatives to what you're doing. HIIT being "more effective" is quite debatable, all things considered, for most people. If you are motivated and enjoy what you're currently doing enough to continue to do it consistently, while staying injury-free, can't beat that with a stick.

Good luck with your weight loss and healthy goals!

Unless you have a heart problem or are seriously obese, there would be no such thing as too much cardio. As long as you don’t die, you’re good to go. Doing HIIT more than twice a week has been shown to be rather counterproductive, but it’s still not going to harm you.

Nethertheless, if you’re not active regularly, you must do cardio more than 3 times a week. Where I live, they recommend 1 hour of moderately intense exercise 5 times a week.

If you can recover from it well enough for the next session and are enjoying it, keep doing it.

The problem is that *too much* cardio can cause your body to enter a catabolic phase.

Best to lower cardio frequency and increase lifting in space of it.
