Anyone happy with muscle they’ve built?

Is anyone content with the muscle they’ve built? How do you train if so? How do you eat? How many days do you train and how much cardio?

If there was such a simple formula that could be regurgitated in a single posting, don't you think it would be front and center of this forum?

I can give you some top level ideas - each of which you'll have to do your own research on.

Yes, I'm happy with how much muscle I've built. I don't expect to build much more than a few more lbs what with pushing 50 years old.

Training has evolved over time, learning what's important (structural balance, progressive overload, calories and protein, directed adaptation vs. variation, periodisation of volume, basically - hard work - there is no way around that)

...and what isn't (all diet fads, worrying about splits, minutia of exercise choice, complex periodisation schemes that look like computer programs).

Training days increase from 3 to 6 as you get more experienced. I don't do cardio and don't regret not doing so.

Just a query, what split do you follow and are you in the gym 6 days a week? How many calories do you eat?

Split is unimportant like I said above. If you aren't fatigued to the point where you can't train a muscle again without a performance drop - then you can train that muscle today.

    Yes

About 3000 is my maintenance. I don't see how this helps you though.

I'm pretty happy, but definitely not satisfied like "That's enough"

Training: everything from a bro split, upper lower, ppl and now, a very personalized split where I hit everything 2-3x in 8 days

Nutrition: between 2200 and 4000 cals depending on my current goal

    Cardio: none

Like Suffolk said, none of this will help you

@ SP: On spread, as usual. I don't why, but I thought you were in your late twenties. It must be all that training (effective exercise makes someone sharper cognitively)...You must be a beast if you started out around 190 lbs. I wish I could get away with not doing cardio (and I'm supposed to be on the leaner side, naturally). Just 'mirin..lol.

@jk: I've seen one of your videos, and your strength and physique are the real deal! How do you guys get away with "no cardio"? Again, just "mirin."

Yes I’m happy with the muscle I built and don’t want to get bigger. Just want to maintain now. Lifting for 5+ years.

First few years went a little overboard lifting 5-6 days, but I don’t think that much is needed. Now lift only 4 days. Current split:

    Quads/calves
    Back/bi
    Glutes/hammies
    Chest/shoulders/tri

2000 cals to maintain, 1500 to cut when I gain weight after vacations etc.

Your title says “happy” while the post says “content”....two totally different things.

Content? Yes, I think I’ve done as well as I can, within the parameters of the sacrifices I’m willing to make, with what I’ve had to work with.

Happy? No...I wish I was born blessed to grow to 5’ 10” with a wide shoulder , tiny waist and hips bone structure, and big calves. I see lucky guys who have never touched a weight that look more muscular or asthetic than I do after all my hard work due to thier lucky genetics.

I mean, I don’t lose sleep over what I can’t change...but does it taint my “happiness” when it comes to lifting progress? Of course it does.
So long and thanks for the fish. Can no longer abide the sexism, racism, homophobia, hostility, and political views.

I saw your progress video, and it does not look like you've been born with "less than stellar" genetics for bodybuilding. But, I realize in this industry, perfectionism is common and we tend to be harsh self-critics...

    Yes/No

Yes because I've made some progress and I'm a content person (counting my blessings not listing my challenges, no body image neurosis etc)

No.. because I'm greedy. I want more. And that's the key to progress
Faith in Jesus first and faith in squats second.
Then other details will start to slot themselves into place.

Pretty content at the moment. I'm 5'9 ish and I'm pretty lean at the moment at 175. Great abs and the aesthetics see really good with a pump.

I'll take a bunch of photos once I hit my goal weight of 165. Will be the leanest I've ever been and with reasonable strength considering I have hella long arms and femurs so I have no business being good at benching or squatting.

Team no calves unfortunately though.... Maybe next year on that goal for me?

I'm the opposite. Happy, but not content.

I look at where I was when I started, and I'm happy I'm not that guy, and don't want to be that guy again. I'm not content, because I know how much more there is to do, and it gets a little frustrating knowing that I'll probably fall short.

But, "Reach for the stars, even if you fall short, you might still grasp the Moon."
I'm out, standing in my field.

    65 and still a newbie.

Considering that my goal is practical application strength endurance and staving off death , I'm extremely happy, aka 'content' with the hypertrophy consequences. I do a lot of slow eccentrics and isometric eccentric holds. My diet is vegan. I train at least six days each week with a minimum of 2 days of high intensity cardio followed by various forms of stretching.

It's easy to not be afraid of tigers when you're sitting in your living room watching a television program about tigers. When you're in the jungle where the tigers are, it's quite a different story.

I'm personally happy with my muscle and physique, and pretty much just maintaining at this point. Which still means working hard and trying to eke out more weight/reps whenever possible. Lifting 7 years. I bet few others on these boards would be "happy" with my amount of muscle (AVI is basically accurate, I'm a few lbs heavier now but it's not really noticeable), but the way you phrase your question makes it come down to personal preference/contentment in the end.

How do you train if so?
Structured proven routines, several from the stickies here, for a few years, now I just do my own thing.

    How do you eat?
Try to hit my macros. Hardest is protein. Some days I hit it, some I don't. I don't count or weigh everything, just ballpark estimate as the day goes on.

How many days do you train and how much cardio?
Lift 3-5 days per week depending on schedule, and I personally do tons of cardio, but that's totally not required and I'm in the minority here on that.

As you can probably tell from the varied responses, there's many roads to Rome, as long as you get the basics right. Find a good routine, focus on compounds, lift for progression, ensure adequate recovery between workouts, stay healthy, and most important of all - do it consistently over time.

A ton might not be necessary, but unless you want to be that muscular guy that huffs and puffs after going up a flight of stairs, some form of cardio is necessary.
