After extensive datalogging on my RS3 in Atlanta I found that even Costco gas was producing knock retard (93 octane). Chevron calmed it down to 1.5 or so degrees while Costco, Shell and Racetrac were all 3+ consistently.

I'm switching to e85 but at least in Atlanta the gas quality mattered in a performance application aspect. Results may vary.

I use only Exxon, Mobil, BP.

The only cheap gas brand I use once in a while is Delta.

What do you use to data log?

Is your RS3 tuned for specifically 93?

My VW is tuned for 91 with unitronic and only 93 is available here so I have a "buffer". Havent logged anything though but should I be fine using any 93 I would think. I cant use e85 unfortunately.

In theory it shouldnt matter. The only difference should be additives and they should be basically variants of the same thing.

What car do you have? If you have a camry or something that takes 87 it wont make a difference.

Shell 93 is the only gas that gets ran in my vehicles since doing some data logs once upon a time... Shell was the only station it didn't bang on the knock sensors and retard the timing. ...My Mustang is tuned on E85 for dat der boost and of course its not as available so I have a Test kit I keep in the car... as long as it checks out at E80+ im good

Used to use Shell almost exclusively, but they separated from the local Circle K few years back and there aren't any locally. Sucks...

I have conducted my own research via data logs through a previous tuner. Out of the 5 major gas stations around my area, all of which had "93 octane"... Shell 93 was the only premium fuel that pre detonation didn't occur due to $hit gas. There is a difference not all premium fuel is created equal

Right now I use Esso mostly for two reasons. I live across the street from one and I work at an Imperial Oil site (owns Esso) and they sometimes give us gas cards.
I drive a 4runner though so it just needs 87 octane and doesnt really make a difference.

I used sunoco before. I filled twice, then ironically my fuel gauge took a crap. Before i brought it to the dealer for warranty work, i put a bottle of redline fuel cleaner with fresh shell 93. About 100 miles later, the fuel gauge fixed itself.

From that day on, i never used sunoco again. And been using shell 93 in everything i own. Never had a problem like that again.

So yes brand does matter. Even though your gas station of choice is on the "top tier fuel" list. Because sunoco is on it and that caused problems for me. Never had an issue with shell.

Not so much the actual gasoline as the additive packages. Shell and Chevron use additives with actual PEA. I think Shell is the best. Although you can do even better by putting the right additives in there but most of them sold over the counter are junk.

Direct Injection vehicles you're kind of screwed because where it really builds up on top of the valves never gets washed down by fuel. It can be chemically cleaned through the intake and sometimes gets to where they intake has to be removed so the top of the valves can be cleaned manually, usually walnut blasting.

Good video with some decent testing.

9:40 you can really see the superior cleaning power of the Shell

also the individual gas station matters too, as they are individually owned as far as i know. Poorly maintained tanks could ruin any brands gas.

I would bet anything that your intermittent gas gauge failure had nothing to do with the gas you used or the redline fuel cleaner.

edit: on second thought it is possible sediment got into your tank and binded your guage float, but even then id say that has less to to do with the brand of gas and more to do with to that individual station, too many factors to decide for sure.

You could be right about individual gas stations but wrong about it not being the problem i had.

Prior to that issue, i had the car 1 year. Only used shell. Filled with sunoco due to repairs to the shell station and then all of a sudden gas gauge took a crap. When i used redline and put back shell, gas gauge fixed itself.

Then from that point foward only used shell. Never had that problem again.

And even to this day, still use shell in all my cars. Never had a problem.

It was either that gas station in particular, that brand, or both. But i don't phuck with sunoco anymore.

sure, but who knows the gauge might have fixed itself on its own regardless of what you did.

Did it get stuck at a level? or did it just stop working, with no reading at all?. If it stopped working then it is 100% electrical issue and absolutely nothing to do with the gas. If it got stuck could be you float got hung up for any multitude of reasons

out of all the possible causes to your error, only a single one is related to the gas you are using - sediment (and even then that sediment could have already been in your fuel tank from previous fills), and redline would unlikely have any effect on fuel tank sediment.
