FYI - Fringe Sport barbell sale - 44 lb fat bar

Fringe Sport is having a barbell sale that ends 3/11. They don't get a lot of play here, but in my experience some of their stuff is a good bang for your buck and might be worth checking out. Most bars are 10% off, which isn't that notable, but I was in the market for a fat bar and just snagged their 44 lb version for $105.74 shipped, regularly $159. I was going to DIY one, but at this price it didn't seem worthwhile. The link below shows $111, but you can sign up for their newsletter and save an addition 5%. The discount code is combinable with the sale. Link to sign up is at the bottom of the page.

In case your curious about their power bar, here's a review from Garage Gym Lab (GamecockLifter):

radrd, thanks for the heads up, after using my 2.5" curl bar, I wouldn't mind giving one of those axle bars a spin on presses and possibly rows.

Depending on your goals and preferences, you might also want to look at a knurled fat bar with or without spinning sleeves. EliteFTS carries one with both, but it's $$$.

Pulled the trigger on the Fringe Sport EZ curl axle bar. Not a ton of savings but looks decent for the price and only $6 shy of black Friday pricing. That 44lb axle straight bar is a very good deal tho. If it wasn't for my stainless 7' fat bar I might've pulled the trigger on that "FAT" one instead.

It's homemade. 304 stainless. The pipe alone was $90 and luckily where I work I had the flanges water jetted and welded on using 1/4" thick stainless plate. The same tube sells for almost double now thanks to the tariffs.

radrd, after hearing about the broken J-hook pin incident from Fringe Sports in the other thread, I'd like to hear about your thoughts on their axle fat bar if you received it yet and if it's in good, working condition.

Should arrive tomorrow. I too am a little apprehensive after the jhook issue. I'll post ITT.

EDIT: Delivery now scheduled for tomorrow/Tuesday.

I wonder how much of the price jumps lately have been the tariffs and how much is people jacking them a little extra here and there to increase profit while they have something else to blame?

I received my fat bar today. It’s fine for me, but I wouldn’t recommend Fringe Sport based on the chit packaging. By the time it got to me, the tube was coming apart and the bar was visible with scuff marks on the powder coating. The tube was supposed to have a plastic cap on each end, but someone decided to only cap one end. I’m guessing that’s why the tube came apart. Unsurprisingly there was no padding inside the tube, just a plastic wrapper that had come half-way off.

The bar itself is fairly impressive and a good deal for what I paid. It weighs in at 44.8 lbs according to my bathroom scale. The scale might be off a little, but I’d call the accuracy very good for a fat bar. Welds look good too – clean and substantial with no gaps. Total length is 83-1/2”, which is 3”+ shorter than either of my power bars. This is due to it having only 15-3/8” loadable sleeves and I wish they were a little longer. Unusual for a fat bar, standard collars work fine – my OSO collars grip tightly, as do some generic spring clips I have sitting around.

My plan is to basically use this bar as a beater - for landmine and pressing with chains - so I don’t really care about the scuffed powder coating. And in general, it’s usually a given that powder coating will scuff, so not a huge deal that it happened in transit. That said, anyone looking to purchase equipment they expect to arrive in pristine condition should probably look elsewhere. The recent j-hook incident is even more concerning, though I’m relieved to see the build quality of this bar looks solid.

Edited trying to get images to show.

Damn those pesky short sleeves, I hate it when I can only fit a dozen or so plates per side

Can you see how they achieved 44lbs? IIRC it takes 3/8" wall thickness or did they use ballast of some sort?

What plates do you have? Wondering since collars fit if the tube is 2" and may not fit plates with tight tolerance.

That's the question. Most speciality bars are sch 40/80 pipe with OD of 1.9, but Oly collars are too big. IIRC there is 2" and 50mm tube, my Ironmaster axle uses tube and has the ends turned down to 1.96 so Oly collars will work.

I can't tell how they achieved 44 lbs. There are holes drilled in the welded end caps and I can hear a couple bits of metal inside the bar, so I assume it's mostly or partly hollow. The pipe wall appears to be about 3/16" thick. Outer circumference is about 6-1/4" and diameter is about 1-15/16", the same as my Rep Power Bar. The entire bar has these measurements, not just the sleeves.

I have Troy Barbell and Body Solid OST calibrated plates. Both work fine on the fat bar, but the Troys are built to tighter tolerances and don't slide as easily on any of my bars. If there are plates built to tighter tolerances than the Troys, I would pass. Can't imagine anything tighter fitting. Here's the Troy plates: https://www.adamantbarbell.com/92--t...ht-plate-black

I had a similar experience as you radrd. My bar came in a box with four holes worn through like it got dragged behind the fedex? truck all the way to my house. My bar was also packaged quite cheaply with just a plastic bag and tape holding it from wobbling around. Both collars, top and bottom, all worn through from the ride over. Emailed fringe sport and told them how disappointed I was in the condition my brand new bar came in. I was offered 15% back for the condition or an exchange. I know its just a bar but by golly I expected a brand new looking bar and not one that looked 20 years old.

BTW....I don't have any pictures of the endcaps but they are fricken sweet.

radrd and dparty82, thanks for the honest input, if I'm ever in the market for a fat bar I'd look elsewhere from Fringe.

Sort of related, but I got a 2.5" fat curl bar from Black Widow Training Gear and I received it knurled, not much to say about it other than that if you do get one you will get a massive biceps and forearms pump from it and it ain't too shabby for triceps work and grip strength as well.

If you have all your primary home gym bases covered, then you can't go wrong for some some high volume pump work and grip strength with one of these...keep in mind that the sleeves are stationary with these and not rotating (to some who nit-pick this might be an issue of non-luxury to them), but for me and this not being a primary compound use type of bar, it's a non-issue.
