Can I workout with a hernia?

As the title suggests, I have been diagnosed with a hernia and I'm wondering how to work out before it's repaired.

I'm still fairly new to working out (6 months) and not wanting to loose any progress I've made by needing to take time off the gym.

What could I do to prevent or slow down muscle loss from not being able to do any heavy lifting?

    Thank you

Going light with higher reps and longer pauses, and avoiding Valsalva maneuver at all costs. Probably gotta ditch the big compounds too.

It has never been linked to heavy lifting or exercise. Likely, you already had a hernia and then exercising and increasing your intra-abdominal pressure just makes them symptomatic as things bulge out. With all of those hernias, it is likely that you should have mesh now.

Most people have a hernia and don't even know it.

    Do you have pain?
    Do you have a lump?
How did you find out you had a hernia?

I had bilateral inguinal hernias for years before I had them patched and never let up a bit.

I did. Think the hernia developed from coughing. Once I saw it, had the doc check it out ASAP. Lined up labrascopic procedure, but in the meantime, doc and surgeon had no concerns with continuing to lift. After, surgeon said nothing heavier than a gallon of milk for two weeks, but agreed at my two week follow-up with my idea of starting at 50% of the weight I was doing, and gradually ramping up from there. 6 week followup is next week, and I'm at 85-90% of where I was (being a novice, 145 BP, 200 squat, 225 DL). I'd say, ask the docs, but was pleasantly surprised in my case.

I had robotic umbilical hernia repair with mesh in November. I took ten days off from lifting and about two more weeks of lifting lighter weights. I was back in no time. Never felt pain or discomfort since.

There's no pain but there is discomfort.

There is only a lump when it protrudes I can massage it back..

I felt something give a few weeks back, then on Sunday there was a bulge the size of a ping pong ball.

I forgot to add its an inguinal hernia on the right of my groin. I have a doctors appointment on Sunday. But I think I'll go light and do maybe 12 reps instead of 8

Let your hernia cures perfectly well, else it will reappear , I have seen many cases of this problem.
If you are too eager to workout you can include some light weight biceps curls. Dont perform any exercises that requires heavy breathing.
