That's kind of what trees already do, no? And natural tree reproduction isn't doing the trick. I don't doubt that helping trees to spread their seed (that sounds kind of nasty) will have some positive effect, but it's not going to be of he magnitude that we need.

IMO, the sooner that people start to come to terms with the fact that nuclear energy is the only answer to our various long term energy problems, the better. All of these pie-in-the-sky schemes aren't going to move the needle.

Produce doesn't take 50 years to grow to full size.

Also, I got the number out of my ass (which I admit isn't the best source).

This works but once done, the trees eventually die, decay, and the carbon is released back into the atmosphere.

Ultimately, if you accept that carbon emissions are a problem, scaling up active CCS is the only strategy that will work. We aren't going to slow down emissions enough to keep up with this. There is a technique called mineral carbonation that can turn air-captured carbon into useful building materials.
Nah, fukk that. I’m not doing that.

Yes. It's a gas and moves with the wind..

Hot air rises and as it does cooler air descends.
There by creating air movement aka wind.

So if the CO2 is heating up near the surface it will eventually rise and eventually cool.

There is enough room in the world’s existing parks, forests, and abandoned land to plant trillions of additional trees, which would have the CO2 storage capacity to cancel out decades of carbon dioxide emissions, according to a new analysis by ecologist Thomas Crowther and colleagues at ETH Zurich, a Swiss university.

Trees are “our most powerful weapon in the fight against climate change,” Crowther told The Independent. Combining forest inventory data from 1.2 million locations around the world and satellite images, the scientists estimate there are 3 trillion trees on Earth — seven times more than previous estimates. But they also found that there is abundant space to restore millions of acres of additional forests, not counting urban and agricultural land.

“There’s 400 gigatons [of CO2 stored] now in the 3 trillion trees,” Crowther said. “If we were to scale that up by Planting trillions of more trees, that’s in the order of hundreds of gigatons captured from the atmosphere – and anthropogenic emissions will completely be wiped out.”
Gee, I learned this in grammar school science class. Plants take up CO2..who would have thunk it?

Trees/plants absorb CO2 through photosynthesis and releases oxygen.

The average acorn weighs 3 grams. There are about 450 grams to the pound, therefore 150 acorns weigh a pound.

Therefore 2 trillion seeds = 13.33 billion pounds of seeds.

A Boeing 767 Cargo plane can carry about 60,000 pounds of cargo.

Therefore we will need 222,000 Boeing 767s for this effort. There are currently 700 in service in the world.

Just a quick effort in showing how completely fukking absurd all of this is.

So much this. Our politicians are actually saying that we need to take steps further to compensate for China and India's expansion. The US is the only country that is currently reducing our CO2 emmissions. 90% of pollution is coming from China, India, and Africa. Then I hear some BS about how China is building these huge solar farms, but what they fail to mention is for every one of those they build a coal plant that burns untreated coal and has no emmissions equipment, and that's why they have daily acid rain. In most cities there, everyone is having a lung infection and cancer galore and we know that Asians usually are the healthiest people.

There is still no evidence that CO2 is a "greenhouse gas" that has caused any planetary warming.

It's not just trees that convert CO2 into oxygen. Every green plant does this.

    lulz.

What is funny is that to get the seeds you'd have to harvest them off trees. But if they are on the trees, they are about to be scattered to the wind anyway!

We need to pull some Jurassic park crap like this and get prehistoric trees like this back from the past: Imgagine how much CO2 they can capture!

Nono, mass plantation like they do here in Canada after the trees are cut for wood/paper is very cheap. Hippies are paid per tree (depends on the contract but $0.10 cnd ish) and I'm guessing each tree cost a few pennies. I'm guessing the total cost per tree is less than $1.

Could be a case of utilising the unemployed (not disabled, just the layabouts) or prisoners.

Plant treets or lose your welfare etc....

I believe some places are already using prisioners to generate electricity using bikes etc and reducing sentences slightly.

Would ride bike or turn turbines for shorter jail time.

nothing wrong with more trees but can the trees survive on their own? Trees are having a hard enough time surviving the barren areas because not enough rain or the top soil was displaced due to flash floods. no point in planting trees when they will dry out and turn into fuel for wild fires.

not sure how much of a dent trees will make in reducing carbon; even if trillions of trees were planted, it'll take years to see results. besides, most carbon is absorbed by the oceans; ocean phytoplankton are responsible for 70 percent of Earth's oxygen production.
