This would be ridiculous even if it were true which it isn't at all

The West needs to show global leadership on this. It's pathetic to point to some other country that may not be doing something right as an excuse for why you should not do it.
The US is also by far the biggest historical contributor to C02 emissions, with Europe close behind. Given the fact that a large portion of C02 stays in the atmosphere for a looooong ass time, I'd say that confers some responsibility.
Meanwhile China is leading the world in renewables and is on track to drastically cut emissions and its reliance on coal in the coming decades. The US pulling out of Paris left a void that they are filling.

Growing up, I used to deer hunt in the woods on the old hammermill paper company property. They already do this en masse. Each year they clear one parcel if land of trees, while planting on last year's cleared parcel. They rotate through and by the time they come back, the trees are mature enough to harvest. Wouldn't be too hard to scale up their process.
