Ugh - my protein shake is almost 600cals.

Is there a better way to get protein post workout without it being a calorie bomb? Granted obviously I am putting way too much stuff in my protein smoothie, but before cutting it down to bare bones, I thought I might ask if someone has a better strategy. Open to real foods too such as eggs etc, as long as it doesn't become a huge production.

In case anyone wants a laugh, here is what I had in what I considered my "healthy smoothie."

    1 scoop of protein - 130cals
    1 banana - 105
    1 cup of frozen blueberries - 70cals
    1 cup of whole milk - 146cals
1 container of chobani greek strawberry yogurt - 140cals
    Total = 591

    Creeps up!
Why not stick with protein + milk/ water?

I know you said real foods, but you're already using protein?

Do you even need the protein post-workout? Have you read the stickies? Hard to tell you what to do without knowing your total daily calories/macros, when you eat them, and when you workout.

I see nothing there that could possibly be omitted.

    (not srs)

    Oh, and thanks for lol

    (srs)

    ETA "serious" reply

    1c. Almond milk = 30 cal
    1 svg protein powder = 130

    160 calories

Add 50cals for a serving of powdered PB if you like

Yes, how about turkey, chicken, eggs, salmon, etc

All high protein food without a huge calorie profile

You don't HAVE to have a shake post workout

If the calories from it are messing with your intake, then ditch it

Post workout bro all you really want is the whey immediately after you are finished for fast absorption.

    600 Cal's is ridiculous

Because you do not need protein directly after working out at all, and it does not need to be fast absorbing...

I have a big bag of protein left over from last year when I got duped by marketing. Thanks for all the help everyone. So here is the deal, I am consistently below my protein targets by 50-80. So regardless of whether or not I use the powder or real food, I clearly need to add more.

Also, would be interested in hearing more about why you don't need protein before or after - and just generally eat it whenever? I like the shake post workout because I am usually starving, but again, I also could eat real food - as it makes no difference for me - just want to do it right.

MPS is elevated for quite sometime (that so called anabolic window) after RE so there's no rush to down a protein shake post workout, like in the locker room of the gym

Basically spread out the Pro throughout the day is best to optimize MPS

The anabolic window is more like the anabolic garage door, very big and wide. No need to slam protein right after. You should be giving yourself regular protein feedings throughout the day when attempting to add muscle

Naw man, come on, it's 2019... best to dry fast for 5 days, then do OMAD for a week, then a celery juice cleanse, then KETO, then the Vertical Diet, then 10 meals a day but only raw foods until 2pm, then only meat for a month.

If you don't, you don't take fitness seriously.

    You answered your own question.

In this as in everything else, there's an 80/20 rule - 20% of the things you can do will give you 80% of your possible results. Once you've sorted them out, you can focus on the 80% of the things that will give you the remaining 20% of your results.

For a guy who's 50-80g short of the protein he needs each day, exactly when he has it isn't important. If your pay from work is short each week, are you worried whether they give it to at 3pm or 5pm? First, sort out the total protein you're getting into you, then worry about exactly when you're getting it.

And this is the thread across people's experiences: majoring in the minors. First, deal with the 20% of stuff that'll give you 80% of your possible results.

Well I definitely feel better after drinking it, probably mainly because of the banana and the blueberries, but if I were to continue, I would think that I would need to make this my entire breakfast given the cal count. I stopped drinking it for the time being, and have just been making a plate of eggs each morning.

bananas and blueberries are food, as are eggs...

food generally makes people feel 'good', because it provides energy.

I like energy, too. It's fun. No?

    Stop over-analyzing... this isn't magic, it's food.

    Why does it matter?

If you must reduce the calories in it try halfing the amounts of banana/blueberries/yogurt/milk you put in it.
