Are Fat Gripz really that legit?

I've read some reviews on Amazon and other sites and it appears that they're just about universally loved? My question is, are they really that great?

I got my generics for $20. I don't use them, but for that price I'm certainly going to submit any negative reviews.

I don't use the 'standard' fat's, as they are a little too big.

I instead recommend these. They smaller than the blues, but still thicker than a standard barbell, so they serve their purpose.

I primarily use these on dumbbells with annoyingly small handles.

    I have owned these for ~ 1year and I couldn't be happier.

If I had my choice, I'd rather buy a 2" fat bar (or whatever diameter you want) over fat gripz or whatever version you prefer.

I agree with this ^^^, I have several fat bars and cable attachments and use them all regularly.

FWIW,I don't really care for Fatgripz and have a pair gathering dust somewhere in the gym.

I'm in this same boat......not because Fat Gripz are a bad product, I just prefer to use an actual fat bar. My fingers occasionally work their way into the seams on the Fat Gripz. They've never come off completely, but that is a possibility.

Legit in the sense that they're a beneficial piece of equipment that does give the user an actual benefit and isn't just some overly marketed nonsense product. To be honest with you I didn't know fat bars were a thing, I've never seen one at any gym I've been a member at and I wouldn't say that buying a real fat bar instead of Fat Gripz is a bad idea but what about cost?

OP, ask yourself how you intend on using them.

For me, I originally got them for grip on light deadlifts.... the problem being once you put them on the bar.... you kinda can lose perspective of where you want your hands (as the lines may be covered). It's also a different feel depending on how you use the grips.... if you use them with he gap down.... your hand is forced to grip tighter so as not to risk losing the bar.... if you put the gap towards your palm.... it's almost like cheating and I don't see any benefit.

Some people feel a benefit from fat bars on bench press, but while I can notice some difference, it's not really a deal maker or breaker for me.

I've since got a couple fat bars which I like much better. I still use the fat grip on dumbbells, but it's not really much of a grip builder, if that's what you're getting at. I get more out of my Ironmind Rolling Thunder and fat bars for grip than Fat Gripz

I use my fat gripz on my dumbbells over 80 as I prefer to have a thicker shaft to hold on to at those weights. My ivankos have a pretty skinny shaft and the gripz counter that. Other than that, like Synthetickiller, get a fat bar if you want to use them for barbell exercises.

They're not a gimmick and do a decent enough job of mimicking the benefits of fat bar training, but as indicated in earlier posts they do have their limitations, particularly when it comes to bar diameter and fit.

Most regular posters here have home set ups, so we're able to equip our gyms with fat bars etc, believe it or not the cost differential between a pair of Fatgripz and a less expensive fat bar is not that great, some guys who are handy have fabricated their own bars using 2" pipe and collars.

However if you'r using a commercial gym that is not equipped with fat bars, then a pair of Fatgripz may be a good option.

I have the standard 2.25" blue ones. They fit perfectly on some Cap cast iron hex dumbbells and they work well for curls. I haven't used my pair for much else. I don't think they are essential to be honest. They are good dumbbell hammer curls if you want to develop the forearm.

My main dumbbell set is 1.5" diameter, which is fairly thick already.

I have the knockoffs, I like them for dumbell work. I still got an axle bar later on though because it feels nicer and is less hassle. The titan axle bar is CHEEEEEAP (inexpensive. I love using it.)

A lot of the knockoffs are available for really cheap (like $7-10) on aliexpress. The photos look identical to the Amazon knockoffs but they are half the price of the amazon knockoffs. You could try those to see if it is a good fit for you and if you really like them, buy the FatGripz brand ones.

I got given some blue ones, so I had a neutral opinion when trying them. They are awesome for forearm exercises. Also good for smaller exercises where you want to throw in some bonus forearm development at the same time (like side-raises). They tend to hurt my thumb a bit.

Like someone else said they are great for hammer curl, it's weird because even though you do less weight the biceps still get exhausted and a great pump.

Personally I have found it harder to motivate myself with them to get that 'last rep' because they feel like I am going to drop the weight, so I don't bother pushing myself.

They are awkward when you first buy them but you learn how to hold and balance them properly pretty quickly. I would recommend them and would buy another pair if they ever got stolen etc.

Also IMO they are quite loose on 25mm bars and big on 30mm bars, they aren't as universal as some say.

I noticed how you lose where to grip too, but if you line up the seam of the fat grip with your eyes you can see through them and onto the knurl marks on the barbells. Also I have never tried light deads with fat grips so might give it a go, thanks for the idea.

don't love them on bars. it's difficult to line them up perfectly on the bar as the way they're cut makes it hard to see all of the knurling sometimes. much prefer them on DBs where it's a little more difficult to mess up the placement since there's little extra room on a DB handle if that makes sense. i too fall in the camp of favoring a fat bar over the fatties. A few years back i was using my fatties more often. had the blues and oranges. haven't used them in a few years although i do use a hog grips device for pull-ups that attaches to my chinning bar.
