Cut or bulk after 5 months away from the gym?

The last 5 months I've been travelling therefore quit weight lifting for this period.
I have gained a little bit of fat (enough for my abs to be less visible) and obviously lost muscle mass.
I know that ONLY beginners can gain muscle whilst cutting.
Does this same concept work for me as it's been so long, or do I need to maintain a calorie surplus like before?

    All answers much appreciated!

You can still maintain/gain muscle on a cut if your diet and workout regimen are on point. Albeit you can put on muscle easier when in surplus.

What you do from here depends on what you want out of your physique. Sounds like you should be on a slow bulk.

Happens in intermediates in plenty of studies too.

Coming back from a lay off makes you an excellent candidate to recomp at maintenance.
