    Used or New Elliptical Precor

    Hello,

I decided to bring an elliptical machine at home and I narrowed down the choices to 2 options:

    1. USED- Precor Elliptical EFX 556i - 14 years old - I tried it yesterday and it functions right The issue is that I can't track down the serial number but I saw the purchase bill . It was purchased new and it was used by one person only
    or
    2. NEW Precor EFX® 222 Energy™ Series - from their store

    Thank you for your help.

I'd be inclined to buy the new one. 14 years old may be harder to find parts for, which is the main reason I prefer slightly used commercial equipment.

    X2

A unit 14 years old may not have parts readily available, if at all. It happens as they get 10yrs +.

The 222 Energy series is a good unit, all the basics needed. Especially if you can pick it up at $2000.

Since it seems like you can afford it and you'll use the elliptical for years to come, I'd go for new. I'd only recommend used if there is a decent chance you'll tire of it and move onto something else. In this case, buy once cry once.

Sorry if I confuse things.... but I'd first check with some after market parts suppliers about availability of parts..... it really depends on the price differences between the machines (including pickup or delivery). With light use and a 10% price compared to newer..... you could benefit from an old unit, if the parts are available. Pretty sure my treadmill is 12+ years old and has cheap & fast parts.

It's a 15 years old unit. The price of an used console on Amazon is $500. I do not know what other parts to look for.
The owner asks $1000 for the elliptical, but because it's so old, I am assuming that anything can get wrong at any time.
Currently the machine functions just fine, but if something go wrong, I'll have to pay for new parts or even worse, to discard it.

A new one is about $2500 with some 7 years warranty and 5 years labor (for an extra of $75)
What would you do if you were me?

    Thank you.

I wouldn't pay $1000 for a 15 year old eliptical. You can find ones that are newer and have been refurbished for less than that if you look around. As I mentioned in an above post, the LifeFitness eliptical I bought used was only $400 and used in a lady's home. I've seen refurbished ones listed for $700 - $1000 that have come out of commercial gyms.

I have an old 546 that I bought out of a commercial gym. Great machine. Thing is so simply built, that there is little to go wrong with it except for the electronics panel. I paid $400 for it 2 years ago. I've had to replace the battery once, which was super cheap. Sportsmith.com will have most parts you'll ever look for, even for older machines.

er1977, you didn't say where you're located but a certain Used Gym Store has a group of Precor elipticals from a gym for only $450 if you're anywhere close to Statesville NC, and even if you're not near there, good used buys are out there or if getting a new one is not an issue, they're readily available as you know. I tend to find good used commercial equipment rather than pay retail prices myself.

Yeah, well I guess I was thinking, a used 15 year old unit under $500, vs a new in the $3k range. No way I'd personally pay $1k for a 15 year old used unit, there are better options out there.

One easy place I look for replacement parts is https://www.sportsmith.net there are other distributors out there, but their website is easy to maneuver and you can search by model.

I am sorry. Obviously I do not spend much time on forums. I am in Atlanta.
In the meantime, the owner said that he gives me the elliptical for free as long as I pay movers. I am willing to try it and if it will break on me, at least I did not waste so much money.

If its free now and you are just paying for getting it to you that's a good deal. 1 user, that's a plus too. Just keep in mind there are limited parts available.

Being you are in Atlanta, if you decide to buy new make sure you stop by one of the Gym Source stores.
