My sister makes over 6 figs, lives in one of the greatest cities in world, and is depressed, plus on meds. I tell her all the time to get out and do something different, but she rather watch Netflix, be angry at the world, and send me stupid memes on IG.
I can't with her sometimes.

More people commit suicide every year than all conflicts, murders, and natural disasters combined. It might be the best century to be alive from a materialistic perspective ... but that statistic definitely says money & things don't mean chit when it comes to happiness.

Because of the human condition. Things can get better and good for some time, but they will never be best. Everyone has their issues, and depression can affect people through various ways, finances, friends, etc. aren't the whole picture. And even if people look good on the outside, there can be depression at the microscopic/genetic level where doctors still don't even know all the causes. It brings into question, how much control do we really have over our happiness and successes. I don't care how much people like to deny it, most of life comes down to luck.

For myself, once suicide became an option, it's always an option. I'm not sad but once my idealism died, everything has become mindless self indulgence. A lot of it was a brutal childhood which effected my brain development and having no value as the poor kid. Now that I'm more attractive and have a little money the attention I get seems very hollow and shallow.

Because the vast majority of people making a lot of money are just as-if not many degrees more-stressed out by their well paying careers than your average 50k/year worker. Then they compensate by buying a bunch of chit they dont need but end up depressed knowing they're just well paid desk drones with just as many hours in a day to enjoy their material things as the next guy

The real problem with celebrities isn't so much the cameras but the insulation. Every meeting and interaction is scheduled or controlled by somebody trying to protect them or make a buck off of them. A lot of celebs aren't born into a situation like that so its tough to handle for them. People who are born into a live or privilege like royalty seem to cope better.
On the flip-side you have average joe who works a 9-5, stuck in artificial lighting all day, who gave up on their dreams years ago, and rots in a routine all day that gives little meaning to their lives."There's a fine line between salvation and drinking poison in the jungle." -Gym Jones

Never knowing if somebody loves you and/or wants to be in your life for legit reasons or because they want money or to leech off you. The latter is far more common so eventually you believe that not a single person in this world actually cares about you which leads you down a rabbit hole of self doubt and a pile of insecurities and the corresponding feeling of worthlessness despite being wildly successful for your age.
The worst part is the vast majority of the world can’t possibly understand because they’ve never been put in such a position which makes you feel even further removed from society. Often at this point people develop addictions to sustain an artificial happiness if even for a short time but this behavior isn’t feasible and eventually leads to a breakdown of one kind or another.
I’ve just described myself, but I got the addictions whipped and fill all the other voids in my life with work and/or self improvement. I live a life most would kill to have but I have no doubt that someday (not anytime soon) I will die by my own hand as I don’t have what it takes to grow old and worthless to society and I don’t believe anything else is capable of killing me outside of a freak accident of sorts.

In cases of being rich, couldn't you kind of hide your net-worth and riches, and see whether people are there to actually enjoy your company, or if they're just trying to leech. I don't see how this would be so difficult, as long as you aren't famous/well-known, but I've never been in this situation so I'm not completely certain. This seems like it could be a good way to filter out many leeches from the start though.

I have no intentions of it, but to ignore the fact that it eventually (decades from now) will be a real possibility is folly. I have no issues with controlling the time and fashion of my demise, I don’t fear death as I don’t believe it is the end of our existence.
I live in a perennial top 3 poorest county in the nation in bumfuk SoDak so even what most would consider mediocre comes across as rich here. It’s hard to explain but no it’s pretty hard to hide success here.

I think what most people struggle with including myself isn't so much depression but feeling like you're stuck in a trap with no way out. It is ungodly hard to see things outside of your own thought loop and it just creates a vicious cycle of unhappiness, beatdowness, and stuckness. People outside your loop will often scratch their head at your dilemma because they will see your situation much more clearly. It's like how everyone that isn't involved in a hand at the poker table can know that you're beat and should muck your hand ... but you're so caught up in your hand and invested in it that you pay off what is obviously a loser to everyone else. Then when you do payoff with the worst of it you beat yourself up for fukin up and being so stupid.
^^That last part is often the worst. There is no worse spot than feeling like your life is fuked... stuck in a trap... and knowing you willingly made all the boneheaded decisions that put you in that spot."There's a fine line between salvation and drinking poison in the jungle." -Gym Jones

The happiest guy I know has none of those things. Middle aged, no family, no kids, no wife, no money, POS car, lives with a roommate, short, average face, works way too hard and gets paid too little (under the table). For some reason he can't stop smiling and just looking at his smile will infect you with happiness like the flu.

Tony Robbins talks about this regularly.
He basically says it's because that their needs aren't met (especially needs for growth and positive contribution), or what they are focusing on isn't meeting their needs (Eg. they are focusing on buying things, rather than having caring and joyful relationships).
Here is a (long) talk from Tony Robbins, where he talks about how important meeting our needs is...

Also OP, anyone of any class can have a chitty childhood, due to emotional neglect, terrifying or tragic experiences, and/or outright abuse. Childhood/adolescent trauma can really damage people long term.

I've seen it firsthand from a guy I've known since I was 10. Dude graduated college with a computer science degree and had a 6 figure job as a software engineer.
He played saxophone in his apartment a lot and annoyed his neighbors so they asked him not to play so loud. What does he do? Invents a soundproof room and builds a huge business out of it. When I first met him, he was happily married and had 2 kids. Big house on the lake, big boat, range rover, the whole 9.
Now I'm nearly 24 and the same guy is a bad alcoholic, abuses prescription medication, tried to commit suicide even. Wife divorced him and his kids moved away so now he's just by himself aside from the workers he lets use his place from time to time. It's sad tbh, big powerful businessman who is now an alcoholic with a prescription medication problem. Usually combines the two as well.Strong mind, strong body.

Long term/chronic depression doesn’t care if you have money or are successful. It is an imbalance of chemicals like Seritonin in the brain.
I suffer from chronic depression. When it spikes, it is pretty scary. Hopelessness and lack of interest in normal things.
Meds can be helpful, but they don’t always work and there are various types, all with side effects and habituation.
Schizophrenia is probably the worst as your mind fights itself. Many folks with Schizophrenia do something(s) in their late teens/early 20s that results in arrest or being 5150’d into a hospital. Thy get meds, it gets better, they stop taking the meds because “they are cured” and they eventually contact police or other governmental representatives, resulting in an endless cycle.
