Mustang and Corvette Brahs: 2012 Mustang or 07 C6 base Corvette?

Sup brahs, so here is the low down:

    • No kids crew.
    • No need for 4 doors or rear seats
    • Have DD car for adverse weather (snow/sleet)... but winter is like 3 months where I live so not a huge deal anyway.
    • Practicality isn't a major concern.
    • Will most likely daily drive this car as well, except for extremely rainy or snowy days (for snow would just park it and use other DD)

Questions for existing Mustang (Coyote) and C6 brahs.

    • Vette is a better value and looks better, but is slightly lower to the ground... I have driven lowered cars before and had no issues... does ride height REALLY affect DD'ing a vette?

    • Love both coyote and LS platforms. Is it fair to say both are pretty rock solid reliability wise with preventative, common-sense maintenance practices?

    • Cost of ownership, are both equal here to? I can do oil, brakes, and smaller things myself... only major things would be taken to a garage.

What are the Misc brahs thoughts? I am literally stuck... love both cars. Vette is a dream car, mustang seems more "everyday" drivable out of two non-practical cars, but I've heard others say and admittedly defend a vette as great for DD'ing if you have a 2nd car for days with snow.

Made a thread here before with the same general question (2014 Mustang GT vs 2008 Corvette) and I decided on the Corvette.

Some basic numbers. The Corvette is lighter and faster than the Mustang, and the LS has a fatter powerband than the Coyote.

    2012 Mustang GT
    3700 lbs
    5.0 Coyote: 412 hp 390 lb-ft

    2007 Corvette
    3200 lbs
    LS2: 400 hp 400 lb-ft (get the 2008 so you get the LS3 with 430 hp)

Coyote vs LS have about the same overall reliability and cost of ownership. Both are pretty reliable, especially if you're doing small work yourself, you shouldn't have any more major issues with one over the other.

Overall: you're buying either car for the engine, but the Corvette is lighter and you can take the ****ing roof off. It's a no brainer IMO for a second car. YOU CAN TAKE THE ROOF OFF and you have a second car so the impracticality doesn't matter. Daily driving a headers/straight piped LS3 with the roof off and windows down with the heat blasting year round was one of the funnest driving experiences of my life, there's no reason you can't DD a Corvette.

    RIP

The vette is an actual sports car, the mustang is box with a powerful engine. I've had a few vette's from c3's to c5's and mustangs from fox bodies sn95's. The mustangs are cheaper and easier to fix, usually by a lot, but the vette is always fun and exciting to drive. Your getting the cutting edge tech for the year, my 91 had a HUD, electric adjustable shocks etc 30 years ago.

I daily drove all my vettes. Snow storms and all, no problems, though 275's are a little challenging, since they ride up out of snow tracks and the car drifts if you're not careful.

One of my best friends went from a Jeep Wrangler to a C6 vette and it was a blue targa top and looked soooo good. He only had it for a month or two before he was back in a 4wd truck

Well you know i had to chime in this thread lol. And we all know which car i would pick.

You can not go wrong with a corvette. More of a head turner, more reliable, easier to make power, more low end torque (usable torque), better resale value, looks better obviously, makes you become a corvette fan forever.

So be careful. Once you own a vette, that's it, you're in. You'll always want another one. Whatever variant there is, you'll eventually want another one and keep on going with a corvette ownership.

The cars are low but you can make them lower by lowering it on the stock bolts, or guys go crazy and get drop spindles.

The LS2 is very reliable. The only known thing people may have went through are the lifters. Which is an easy fix if you do hear a lifter noise, then change them out right away, otherwise they eat up your cam. Then you'll have to replace the lifters and the cam. But other than that, the engine is bulletproof.

Whatever car you get, what are your plans? LEaving it the way it is, or modifying it?

C6es are pretty low to the ground (lower than the C7 for example) so you have to be careful parking mostly. Driveways may be a problem depending on the approach angle. Normal low clearance car problems.

I would also splurge on a 2010 grand sport if you can swing it. Better car overall with the LS3.

As a 2011 Mustang GT owner, I'd probably still spring for the Corvette (dream car since I was a kid). I love my car but had to spend a decent amount on suspension to get it look/drive the way I wanted it to as the factory suspension is absolute trash. Lots of body roll and nose dive on braking. That being said, the 5.0 is a great platform. Very to easy to work on/mod as well.

The GT's MT-82 trans is straight hot garbage. That alone would push me away from the Mustang personally. The Corvette has great power/ weight, can handle, and can even get decent gas mileage. The vette does come with the famous "Corvette" tax for aftermarket parts and such. But the vette is simply a better performing and better looking car all around.

I have had a base model C6 for about 4 years now and its the best sports car I've owned so far. Not too flashy, light weight, 6 speed, and very easy to make fast. Zero issues so far.

Honestly, as a transmission in itself its not the worst thing ever. I'll agree a T-56 is 100% better, but all the **** the MT82 gets isn't fully warranted because of the transmission itself. The factory clutch is the weakest point of these cars and is what ultimately causes alot of the issues that people complain about. A better clutch, MGW shifter, and SS clutch line help ALOT. That is alot of money to spend just to fix a trans though, I will agree.

I agree. My C6 was pretty damn low. Front splitter only 3 inches from the ground. But it wasn't a daily so i didn't mind.

I agree with the grand sport at least. You'll still get the ever so popular RELIABLE LS3, and you'll have the widebody look like the z06/zr1.

The trans is a lot stronger than the trans in the mustang, and the engine is more reliable and cheap to make power. To who said there's a corvette tax on parts and stuff. LS aftermarket is actually very cheap. And you don't need to do much to get an LS to make big power. 1000 bucks on parts and an LS3 C6 can dip into the 11s.

I am in the same boat as OP, I have been looking at 2012-2013 c6 Grand sports. I drove both the 5.0 and the c6 gs, I am not a great driver, but I thought the 5.0 was more exciting. The c6 is definitely more refined, probably holds value much better. IMO its more aesthetic.
The c6 GS I drove came with the stock exhaust, and the 5.0 had the active exhaust, so that may have played a huge role in my driving impressions lol.

But a cammed, headers and exhaust c6 GS would be hnnnng IMO

If it was a 2018 GT with a PP or PP2 and magneride then take the stang, otherwise vette all the way. Older mustangs were good in a straight line but were light years behind even 00s GM products

Aluminum, but it might as well be fiberglass given how many snap

fords solution to it seems to be to give you another aluminum fork box to replace the one you just broke lmao. Another reason to never tough a 6s stang

The pp2 magna ride stangs are like 45-50k. might as well pick up a lightly used c7 z51 vette

Correct me if i'm wrong but isn't the PP2 6 speed ONLY?

Because why would you get the 6 speed knowing people are destroying forks left and right? And the 10 speed is better anyway, meaning you'll have a faster car.

If you can find a PP with the 10 speed, i think they're still mid 30s? Maybe by this summer it'll be high 20s. Or right at 30 on the dot. That's what i'm waiting for. Then i'm getting one. Or at least heading that way until i do more research about the engine and the infamous "engine tick". That part scares me.

Yeah man, do you think it's because owners are not doing the break in oil change? I know on the C7's, they recommend your oil to be changed at 500 miles, otherwise they "could" deny a warranty claim should you have problems with the engine within the warranty period.

I really like the 18+ GT. It's relatively cheap, quick, the 10 speed, looks good. I'm just worried about the engine tick.

I never had to worry about stuff like that since i owned GM products for a while now lol. I'm used to the GM reliability.

It seems to happen after the oil change, honestly no one has proved what it is yet - palm beach dyno has a new vid about the cylinder liner being to blame but that's still conjecture, they say it's not the same process used in the gt350 even though people thought it was.

Either way I dont feel I can boost mine until at least the first 5k miles, to be sure

    Phuckkk that sucks.

The GT350 would be good but too much $$ for the performance. If a used one was around GT pricing, i might consider it. But i don't want a manual for a daily. Phuck that.

Maybe they'll address this issue for 2019 or same chit? IF they change chit around, i'll wait for a 19.

I have owned a 2013 Mustang GT since they started selling them in July 2012 . The only problems I have had out of that car were problems I caused myself..

    Example:
-Launching 6sp car on tires at 7k rpm , eventually you're gonna have a bad time
-had Centri blower on it.. sold it... had nitrous kit on it... took it off.. .back to boost with a 2.9L whipple and ended up throwing a rod out of the side of the block at 720 to the tire

I could go on and on but for the amount of abuse I have put that car through its been a fkn trooper

I also own a 2015GT with a 6r80 and the kit off of the 13' and will run 10.8's-10.9's all day long.

With all that said , as much as I love both of my Mustangs the ONLY reason I own them and not a Z06 is because I have small kids . I need a back seat so I can toss the family in them and cruise around... Otherwise I would be in a Procharged Z
