Volume is what matters ultimately. As long as you're increasing volume over time in form of sets, reps or weight - you should be able to make progress.
So that means that if one wanted to obtain the same gains that provide doing certain exercise 4x10 but with sets of 5, that is using a higher weight to focus more on strength, then you just have to double the sets in order to match the total reps?

    No.

This is why total reps suck as a measure of volume.
Intensity matters. Below a certain threshold of intensity you have to push to failure to stimulate the same growth, above a certain threshold and all reps are stimulating growth.

Heavy sets of 5 are already doing as much, if not more than sets of 10. You don't need to increase the sets because you are only doing 5s...

When FaIIen says increasing reps, it's meant reps per set at a given weight.

Intensity matters...going to failure or close enough to matters...using heavy weight relative to one's strength matters...Thanks for making it plain and simple. Same thoughts to General Serpent, SupraMax and Orlando as well.

Most the stuff argued about on this forum ends being inconsequential haha.
Generally we all agree on 98% of what matters and just nitpick argue the more individual or less tried and true stuff
