So I've been searching around for some way to judge my progress against other beginners to see if I'm on the right track and something has become alarmingly apparent to me that I have no explanation for. So I used to do upper body a lot in college (almost never did lower body) so I expected my bench to go up pretty quickly once I got back into it (thank God for muscle memory), but my squat and deadlift have gone up significantly faster than I would expect considering I rarely squatted in college and I never deadlifted until August of this year (granted I've always been pretty active). See stats below:
Aug 4th 2018 stats:
Weight - 143lb ~ 13% BF
Bench - 185x1
Squat - 170x7
Deadlift - 230x1
Current stats:
Weight 158lb ~ 16% BF
Bench - 250x1
Squat - 280x1
Deadlift - 385x1
I was running a 5x5 program with some extra accessory work added in. Does this seem like pretty normal gains in 4 months time? Looking at some strength standards and reading a few articles it seems a little odd to go from novice level strength to advanced in only 4 months. Just curious if others have seen similar gains.
PS. I watched a ton of videos and did have several experienced lifters at my gym coach me on squats and deadlifts for fear of injuring myself, and I started slowly with just the bar. I did NOT just jump into heavy weights right off the bat.

I think many trainees can get up to 315 pretty quickly. I feel like a 315 pull is kinda like a 185 bench. Great gains though keep it up!
2019 goals - squat 365, bench 295, DL 455
OHP 1XBW, Incline press - 225 for reps
Currently lifts
Bench - 265 - 3x3
Squat - 315 - 3x3
Deadlift - 415 1x3
OHP - 165 - 1x5 (taking a long break from this one)
Incline press - 205 5x5
BW - 185.. On the way to 170

awesome job! but without videos of your squat, dead, etc, its hard to say if others have progressed that fast! not that i would take anything away from your progress, and i think its great, but normally when we hear on here, that you have reputable "experienced lifters" watching over you, usually its incorrect!! and if you are progressing that fast, why change to intermediate program, when you are still progressing as a novice? Numbers mean nothing as a novice! its about being able to recover from session to session! im DEF rooting for you though! i REALLY hope you can show us a nice squat and a dead at those weights! cuz that would be impressive in 4 months

I might be able to give you some strength standard to compare to. i'm about 5'8" and 155lbs, so similar weight, and I used to lift a while ago, but was inconsistent for quite some time, but I've also been lifting since about August. I also never placed emphasis on squats back in the day. I don't know my 1 rep maxes, but these were the latest sets i've done.
Weight: 155lbs
Bench: 200, 5 set of 5 reps
Squat: 225, 3-5 reps
Deadlift: 315, 2 reps (double overhand grip, no wraps/belt)
Your lifts are great bro....keep it up!***Trance4Life Crew***

Nearly identical height, weight, age, and lifts. Weird. Props on double overhand @ 315. I had to switch to mixed grip around 275. I don't own a belt or straps.
dski79, I don't have any videos of me doing any of my max lifts. The only videos I have are me pulling 225 when I was somewhat new to the lift and me pulling 305 a month or so ago. I'll gladly post the 305 pull if you want to critique it.158lb

Yea that is weird...haha. I had some bad biceps tendinitis that I attribute to using a mixed grip and pulling heavy on deads. Well at least that's what I believe caused it. So I'm going to see how far I can go with the double overhand. Putting in a lot of work on grip strength. Fat Gripz have been a godsend.

Yea, it sucks when lifts don’t agree with your basic anatomy. I get terrible tendinitis in my wrists doing any kind of bar curls (including EZ bar) so I just stick with dumbbells and compound pulls.
Also, I tried several times yesterday to post that video yesterday and had nothing but issues. Lol.158lb
