If you find the video about Pottenger's cats and watch it, they don't tell you that the reason the cats were dying was they weren't getting enough taurine when they were switched from raw scraps to cooked. Apparently cooking meat destroys taurine. First time I ever took taurine my feet felt really light and I felt like I knew where the "Red Bull gives you wings" came from; but after that first time the effect became less and less noticeable and it was like chasing the dragon. Humans can synthesize taurine in the body so it is not essential as it is in cats. Now a days I read that all cat food companies add taurine to their cat food.
I've read that the taurine in Red Bull and sold as a supplement is artificial and not as good as the taurine in raw meat. I just about got to the end of my 1000g bag of taurine a couple of years ago and stopped using it. I have stopped almost all supplements since I started doing raw organ meat smoothies. My intention was to supplement with raw glandulars but they were so expensive that I couldn't afford them. Why pay a fortune I thought; when I can just buy raw liver, kidney, testicles, tripe, thymus and heart for practically nothing, put them in the freezer to kill off parasites and transfer them directly from my freezer to my blender? That was several years ago and I still do them nearly every day and feel they have made a huge difference in my health. Don't try this at home kids! I don't recommend them to anyone. It is just something I evolved into as my own personal preference.
In conclusion: Humans can synthesize taurine and don't require it; but it seems awfully popular. Especially in energy drinks. The kind of taurine in supplements and energy drinks is synthesized in a lab and does not come from bulls balls.

My guess would be that new born calves are capable of synthesizing taurine on their own but human babie's livers haven't developed enough to do it. On a side note, cats are basically carnivores and apparently lost their ability to synthesize taurine on account they got plenty from their natural diet. This seems similar to the way humans have lost their ability to synthesize vitamin C.
No. You wont find taurine in the grocery store. Only in energy drinks and cat food. I guess it's just not popular enough to sell on it's own as a supplement. You would think it would be with the popularity of Red Bull. You can easily find it for sale online though.
Most people don't get enough magnesium. I would think magnesium taurate would be a good way to kill two birds with one stone. Now that I think back, that was the first taurine supplement I ever took and then ordered the plain taurine afterwards to get even more taurine 'cause too much magnesium gives you diarrhea. I still supplement with magnesium, one of the few supplements I still take and if magnesium taurate was a bit cheaper I'd probably be ordering that instead of magnesium glycinate.
