Sleep is key. You could lift all the weight in the world, hit your macros perfectly, but if your sleep is lacking, you’re not going to be going anywhere. Many companies are realizing the market for sleep supplements/aids, and Blue Star Nutraceuticals is one of them. Being one of the more respected companies in the industry, Blue Star took aim at the sleep-deprived with GH Peak. Designed to help you fall asleep, stay asleep, and encourage a healthy sleep cycle, GH Peak promotes itself as being an “all-in-one” sleep supplement.
Like all Blue Star supplements, GH Peak comes loaded to the brim with proper dosage of its ingredients. The key sleep ingredients are L-Lysine, Ashwagandha Extract, Melatonin, 5-HTP, and Valerian Root. Each of these are leveled out correctly as recommended by multiple sources. From 5 mg of Melatonin to 100 mg of 5-HTP, you can rest assured (pun intended) that GH Peak isn’t skimping on the right amounts. I’ve actually taken each of these ingredients by themselves (minus Ashwagandha Extract) and haven’t had much success with them individually. However, they each play a role and go hand-in-hand with one another.
The first interesting thing I noticed about GH Peak was its directions. Typically, sleep supplements advise you to take the pills or powder about 20-30 minutes before it’s time to call it quits. There are some suggestions out there recently that say it’s more beneficial to take Melatonin up to 2-hours before you shut out the lights, and GH Peak follows this approach. The 4-pill serving size is to be taken 1-2 hours before bed, so make sure you plan accordingly. This could be a negative for some, since it really doesn’t allow much wiggle-room in your schedule.
The first night I tried GH Peak about an hour before I went to sleep, and I didn’t really experience anything. In all, I slept about 5.5 hours and didn’t feel heavy eye-lids or anything before I went to sleep. I woke up about twice that night, which is very typical for me. The next morning, I felt groggy and tired, and came off rather disappointed. My track record with sleep supplements isn’t the best, as I have what I believe to be some pretty harsh sleep issues (i.e. trouble staying asleep, getting REM, waking early, etc).
My second round of GH Peak, I tried taking it just about two hours before I planned to fall asleep. This time, after about an hour and a half, I felt very drowsy. Within minutes of climbing into my bed, I drifted off. I slept a bit more through the night, waking up only once, but then my usual habit of sleeping for 30 minutes, waking up for 5, repeat began to play out. So, while GH Peak helped put me to sleep, it didn’t help me stay asleep. To be fair, no sleep supplement yet has aided in this problem area, and I am set to see a sleep specialist this month to find out what my issue is. I will say that upon rising, even after my broken sleep, I did feel quite refreshed. It seems that (for me) taking it closer to the 2-hour mark helped put me to sleep, and got rid of the grogginess.
Compared to other sleep supplements like Fade Out and Midnight Dream, I think GH Peak is a little bit more well-rounded. While no sleep supplement has proven effective yet at helping me STAY asleep, GH Peak is a step-above the rest because when timed properly, it does help me drift off. Again, the timing of the dosage doesn’t allow for a lot of flexibility however. As with most Blue Star products, this stuff ain’t cheap…and as they say, it never will be. At the price point, I’d use GH Peak for those days when you know you’re going to be home, you know you’re going to go to sleep at a certain time, and you need the recovery.
Overall – 7/10
